I fear the gentleman posing on the steps appears to favour some rather dubious politics??

You put your left arm in, your left arm out, in, out,in, out, then shake it all about...

I saw one of the "Bidding Room" programmes by accident, as far as I'm concerned it is an extremely irritation format, where one of the items on offer was a Hornby No.40 clockwork train set from the mid 50s.  Not in the best of condition...  One of the bidders got it, I don't remember for how much.  ebay has a rather overpriced example...

Its not something that one would seek to view, as bad as Bargain Hunt, presented by Anita Manning*....

* Or that "Antique Dealer" programme, presented by the bloke who looks as if he had been marinaded in teak oil for a decade.

Must be a bit dark inside this signal box

Judging by the very shallow windows on the front.

Cheers

Darius

Addendum - the original Corfe Castle signal box did have very shallow front windows, so the model is quite accurate.

Not very good photography - yet again!? One of my eBay gripes is c**p photos!

Under/over exposed, pixilated, out of focus, a Big Thumb obscuring the object, pets in shot, product NOT in shot, etc etc...

The inadequate knowledge of the vendor about product photography is only exceeded by their lack of knowledge about the thing they are trying to sell...

But they still expect to receive big bucks for their poorly photographed, '... untested ...' goods!

Just watched this auction

 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hornby-R2220-BR-4-6-2-Battle-Of-Britain-Class-Locomotive-92-Squadron-Boxed-/303890487650?autorefresh=true&nma=true&si=rHj6H9tnye%2B9kKeVPKqKB6%2FpI7Q%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Can't believe some chump just pushed it all the way to £112 (Well 117 inc delivery)

These things aren't exactly rare and can be picked up for a fraction of that, even from traditional retailers.

Ebay is becoming a complete waste of time thanks to general stupidity.

There is and always has been a number of people who have got to possess a certain item, no matter what the price, even if they could buy one cheaper elsewhere / it's not particularly rare / it's only the latest fad / it's an obsolete piece of junk.

It's what has kept antique dealers, vintage car dealers auctioneers and art gallery owners in King of Persia style for decades. Their livelihood depends entirely on a portion of the population having far too much disposable income. (I include myself here as I make a living selling my paintings and the odd vintage motorcycle etc.)

It's the way of things sadly. As John Lennon (allegedly a socialist) is purported to have said: "Whoever said money can't buy you happiness, doesn't know where to shop".

Better to muster all of your energy for the next time someone says: "There's no money about you know", "The country is on it's knees", or "Money isn't everything". Use that energy to resist punching them until you are tired, bored or both.

It's just not worth the prison time trying to educate idiots. :D

Higher bidder 'feedback numbers' suggests traders battling it out at the end? Apparent high prices achieved by some may give other sellers false hopes of sky high returns for models sold?

That has been the case in the vintage car and motorcycle world since before eBay. You would see certain spare parts or project vehicles going from dealer to dealer and the price going up accordingly.

We used to have bets on whether certain things would ever end up on the vehicle that they were intended for. It's the double edged sword of turning your hobbies into businesses.

The reason why I could never be a model railway dealer: items would come my way that I KNOW I wouldn't be able to sell on!

If you look the seller appears to have acquired a large collection of unused Hornby items. I suspect that for some people, getting a 'new' item long since unavailable as such is making them bid well over 'the going rate'. The irony is I suspect a number of the models may well need fettling to get going as 15-20 years non-use leads to solidified lubricant, gremlins etc.

But I still find bargains quite often on ebay, you just have to be prepared to hunt them out.

Maybe. Oxfam seems to have the crazy idea a Hornby Duplo carriage is worth £185.00 !!!

https://onlineshop.oxfam.org.uk/Hornby-dublo-4071-restaurant-car/product/HD_200312779?sku=HD_200312779

I saw one of these go for £60 not so long ago and I thought that was mental.

I'm left wondering do people simply pluck figures out of the blue when 'valuing' S/H models for sale? Or might they be inspired by the prices quoted for top-end, brand new, RTR models? They might just believe that many model railway buyers are wealthy mugs?

I find on Ebay you have to take 'new' with a pinch of salt. It usually translates to 'as new' condition where someone has opened the box carefully and hasn't damaged the flaps in the process. That particular seller is misleading with the 'new' claims along with their items being part of a 'lifetime collection'  I go to the online portals of quite a few auction sites and I've noticed that quite often, that paticular ebay seller puts up three/ four individual lots exactly matching a three / four item lot moments after it closes. Coincidence, or something more sinister!

I guess they buy a group of models at what they would consider a reasonable price, then sell them on as individual items? I've noticed in the past that some dealers give such models a quick spray of grey undercoat (applied over existing paint, etched numberplates and transfers) before trying to sell them on?
