EBay madness

I love older model railway engineering. Not just the motor noise and smells but the better than average chances of breathing life into a 'non-runner' chassis.

Judging by what I am reading about brand new locomotives recently, it seems that levels of reliability and durability haven't quadrupled along with prices over the last 20 years. If anything, they seem to be inversely proportional.

So I was looking for some small screws on eBay - M2 x 4mm countersunk - and found the ideal item. However, when I tried to buy them this message popped up.

What is this all about - does the seller actually want to remain in business?  Did Mrs Doyle (Father Ted) write their business plan?

Cheers

Darius (who will be buying from a seller that, you know, actually wants to sell things)

I've got a number of these...

£25???  And another £5 postage?

I suppose the Modelzone bag could be used as some sort of selling ploy for a dodgy model...

'A hand-bag':

"MISS PRISM: Lady Bracknell, I admit with shame that I do not know. I only wish I did. The plain facts of the case are these. On the morning of the day you mention, a day that is for ever branded on my memory, I prepared as usual to take the baby out in its perambulator. I had also with me a somewhat old, but capacious hand-bag in which I had intended to place the manuscript of a work of fiction that I had written during my few unoccupied hours. In a moment of mental abstraction, for which I never can forgive myself, I deposited the manuscript in the basinette, and placed the baby in the hand-bag.

JACK [Who has been listening attentively.]: But where did you deposit the hand-bag?"

Anyone give me £50 for a real vintage yellow Beatties carrier bag circa 1985?

And getting back to trains, how about a Triang Blue Pullman if you can't afford a Bachmann one?

Starting at £250, lovely plumage!

Someone is offering a genuine Bachmann Blue Pullman at a starting bid of a fiver or so less, including an eye-watering delivery charge...

The link made clickable...

Interesting...

Not the Kitmaster kits...

Tri-ang  parlour cars with the window strips modified.

I seem to recall some self adhesive overlays were made?

The kitchen side doors are only marked on the window strips.

The lettering is all redone...

The description is interesting...Southern Pride coach parts?

All that work, and the bogies and some under frames are wrong...;)

Err, right....

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Graham-Farish-Sana-Fe-8731-No-8007-Class-47-Locomotive-N-Gauge-Boxed/233915540754?hash=item367673e512:g:zxUAAOSwmZhgPSwF

Just because that is what it says on the outside of the box, it does not always equate to the contents...

From the same seller - Not Hornby (you don't say) and not LNER either unless Union Pacific bought them up at some point...

I note that the San[t]a Fe “Class 47”, in addition to being a dodgy repaint, has had its cab roof bitten off and end handrails broken to make it fit into the box inlay tray.

Masterpiece.

Cheers

Maybe that’s why there are no photos shewing the model out of the box.

The chopped off cab roof would be more noticeable then.

This misplaced faith in the box description is, unfortunately, not uncommon!

Another example out there is a Playcraft open wagon residing in a Hornby Dublo box...described as a Hornby Dublo model! :unknw_mini:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hornby-dublo-sd6-13-ton-standard-wagon-br-oo-gauge-in-excellent-condition-boxed/114501900266?

OK, later Playcraft models do have a very similar coupling to HD, but there is Playcraft  moulded on the bottom of the wagon!

Another strange thing, a Tri-ang  Railways boxed wagon, described as Hornby Dublo....

Nowhere on the box or wagon is Hornby even mentioned! :scratchhead:

Seems to have changed to £219.  The £26.75 delivery is Royal Mail Special Delivery which includes automatic compo up to £500 (and can be increased for a price).  It used to start at £12.50 but am guessing size/weight pushes it up.  Not entirely unreasonable given the likely final price and the fact that normal compo is £20 with RM, and go whistle with many other courier services.  If I were bidding I'd simply factor it in and reduce my ceiling for the bid on the train.
