A couple more views of progress.  Some of the inlaid track has been checkrailed but there is still a bit to go.

 

Overall approaches including the signal box. A water tower goes just opposite, this side of the small building.

Not much progress lately due to work etc but a sense of where this is going.  With the goods yard approaches full of weathered vans, conflats etc, it should be a realistic and reasonably accurate backdrop to the main scene.

And somewhat late but a few down trains for your pleasure:

 

 

Obviously not much variation in passenger stock yet but will be rectified in time.  Some slight tweaking needed to smooth out running. I think some of the blame is with bogie wheels, but we will see.

Is that St Saviours steeple in the background, or am I just imagining it.

Love the cross border pushing past the local as they crest the climb, perfect start to any morning

Yes it is indeed St Saviour’s I think. Salvaged from the painted backscene of Camden Shed mk1.

 

The other backscene boards can’t really work on the new layout as 12’ doesn’t really stretch to 22’, but the two ends work well.  The challenge will be to paint the rest to (a) match and (b) represent the scene.  
 

Probably will now have to remove and carefully store all of the backscene boards, buildings and almost all of the stock in order to make some more progress on construction.

Thanks mate. It is definitely a bit of a milestone and close to a bigger one which is when I can be really happy with the running for any loco and stock on all 4 mainlines.  The up lines are pretty good, and the down lines are almost there.   Then I think we can get a good impression of 300-600 tons being dragged over the top of the bank or being held back approaching the descent, and I can start work on the shed area.  
 

I may at least do the painting, ballasting and weathering of the mainlines and the goods yard approaches before completing the shed area.  Anyway……

Would it be possible to advise what the designations (B6 etc) of the pointwork in the area between the turntable and shed entrance are please? And what are the diamonds - they are clearly not standard items.

Hello Bernard,

 

there are four B6s, one B7 and one B8 in that area.  The three that are on the loco road next to the down fast are all B6. I expect that they probably aren’t completely correct but I planned it from the real track plan from the OS map which I purchased.  So they are as they are.  

 

The diamonds are completely bespoke and part curved so I have no clue.  They will just be built from the templot plan. Because the whole area is checkrailed throughout and I haven’t worked out how to do that on templot, I haven’t even turned them into diamonds, rather just left the intersecting tracks as they are.

Wrong scale..this layout is a 4mm one  ot a 7mm one.

There’s a nice 7mm scale layout of the top end of Camden shed that was on the exhibition circuit,  JLTRT are now MM1 models Loveless is now 55H models 

MM1 and David Andrews only tend to do short production runs of kits, 

Finney 7 for the ultimate Duchess, Gladiator kits are currently being updated and there’s always masterpiece models as well.

Evening all,

 

Final Camden update of 2021 - unless something bizarre happens this evening.

 

As 2021 dawned,  this was the state of play:

 

 

 

So, despite being away for 2 1/2 months in Asia at the end of the year, and not having a particularly great year with injury and subsequent rehab, I have at least got somewhere.  We have all the baseboards completed and working including the complex gate, 4 functional, wired and pretty smooth mainlines, and the beginning of a backdrop with the backscene boards and the goods yard.

Goods yard is all fully laid and checkrailed now, including through all the pointwork.

 

 

 

The 7 wagon turntables have been made ornamental rather than functional, obviously.  Good job I am not doing the whole goods yard as there are 82 of them. 
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Two of the roads are fully wired and operational for a little interest moving wagons around.

New year greetings to all on this impressive thread. I have returned to it after some months spent updating our website and researching the W. and A. Gilbey operations in the goods depot. I have also been looking at the Dumpton Place entrance to the Shed and attach my contribution to this. I hope it will be properly marked one day. I expect to be working with Network Rail later this month on Stephenson Walk, a pedestrian and cycle way from the Regent's Canal towpath, along the mainline, rising up to Regent's Park Road at the bridge by the former Primrose Hill station.

Painstaking progress doing all the infill for the goods yard…….

 

Basically, it needs 2 layers of 1mm card glued down - it was laid on one layer then the second is infill and packing.  Then there is a layer of 5 or 10 thou plasticard glued to the card, before the final decorative layer which is SE Finecast stone setts, with some brick courses acting as passable representations of the edging stones alongside the rails and check rails.  These are welded to the underlying plastic using solvent.  I knew this would be much more straightforward than trying to glue plastic directly to card or paper.  As a method, it does work ok, and I am getting quicker now I have worked out a more obvious flow to it.  Some aspects are just a bit wrong (cutting courses of setts diagonally in the infill around the pointwork for example) but it shouldn’t be too noticeable.  Some etched drains maybe to add, plus capstans and the other little things that the capstans use to pull the ropes around (can’t remember what they are called).

Honestly this looks like a horror show at such magnification but I’m hoping it will be ok - this is before I have brushed thinned filler across it, primed, painted and weathered, then covered it with a load of mainly stationary wagons.  Will probably need to consult the “wagonistas” on here for some guidance beyond just the simple BR vans I have from Parkside and Bachmann.   I also need more info on the “Camden Goods” - lesser known WCML equivalent of the Scotch Goods. 
 

And an idea of what it will begin to look like alongside the goods shed itself

Looks great! Did you think about using DAS or filler and using a tool to mark the setts? It worked on Herculaneum Dock but your method produces a good result.

It is probably worth going over the surface of the sets with sandpaper once it has properly cured.  It will take the rather rounded tops of the SE Finecast plasticard back a bit?
