RMweb Gold queensquare Posted December 28, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 28, 2018 Fascinating Jerry. I suppose if you model it as per 1924 just after the changeover the old boxes would still be in place. You could then make just the New Bath Junction box removable to be able to revert to earlier days at least for the asppearance. Much harder to change the working to different frames! What was the driver for the change reduction of manpower, ease of maintenance, increased line capacity or longer trains. Don My switching signal boxes would be purely cosmetic. The driver I suspect was almost certainly cutting costs. Jerry
RMweb Gold Popular Post queensquare Posted January 9, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 9, 2019 (edited) These very cold winter evenings I tend not to venture back to the workshop but whittle some plasticard with a minimal toolkit and a tray on my knees. This winter I thought I would do the group of buildings that make up the Midland MPD, starting with the shed. I drew and published the drawings in the SDJR magazine back in 1996 so it's probably about time! bgman
Some nice work going on quietly there Jerry, may I ask what the core walls are constructed with ? Ironically I too have been doing some "knock kneed" building in the sitting room rather than at my workbench. Haven't done it for years and yet despite being slightly apprehensive it seems to work. G p.s. Also saves on the electric too ! p.p.s. RMweb Gold Donw Posted January 10, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 10, 2019 Lovely work Jerry. I thought you would be too young to start feeling the cold. I seem to be feeling it more these days. Pretty cold down the clubhouse tonight. Don
RMweb Gold Popular Post queensquare Posted January 10, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 10, 2019 (edited) Thanks chaps. Grahame, its all plasticard, kept to an odd number of layers to hopefully keep it flat and stable as its a big building by 2mm standards and I want to keep the roof removable. Corners are mitered with a large, illegitimate file! I made a little metal template for cutting out the windows and arches to aid consistency. The windows themselves were etched by Keith Armes when he was experimenting with home etching, they are still in the original envelope he sent to me, along with a note, back in 1996! The etches are trapped in the layers that make up the wall with a slot left so that glazing can be added after painting. The coal stage has also reached the basic carcass stage with the water tower to follow. Jerry Edited January 10, 2019 by queensquare
RMweb Gold queensquare Posted January 11, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 11, 2019 (edited) This weekend Kim and I will be demonstrating at the excellent Stevanage show - see http://www.cmra.org.uk/exhibition.html - followed in a couple of weeks time by the equally good Southampton show - see https://southamptonmodelrailwaysociety.wordpress.com/smrs-exhibition-2019/ We will be taking along the part built engine shed and signal boxes which have featured recently on this thread along with a selection of MR and SDJR locos from the Bath project. In addition I will have the SDJR brake vans with me (including a handful of the kits still for sale) so if anyone has any questions regarding anything featured on this thread or 2mm modelling in general, do drop by for a chat. RMweb Gold Popular Post queensquare Posted January 14, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 14, 2019 At the excellent Stevanage show this weekend Keith Gloster brought his part built SDJR 7F (from Nigel Hunt etches) along which is looking superb and far more advanced than mine. I was particularly taken with the very clever carrying cradle/loco cassette it came in. Jerry 19
Atso
Despite being primarily an LNER enthusiast, I happy admit that I do have a soft spot for the 7F class and Keith's one looks like it is going to be a very fine model. It was great to chat up yesterday and thanks again for the bits. Edited January 14, 2019 by Atso
RMweb Gold Donw Posted January 15, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 15, 2019 I often hear one working up the bank to Washford (currently 53808) Looks like it will make a fine model. Don
RMweb Gold queensquare Posted February 1, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 1, 2019 Headed for the workshop this morning and found snow banked up against the door. The chickens had never seen snow before and were not impressed, they are refusing to come out of their nesting box even with the enticement of food and water at the bottom of the ramp. Sadly the Sodbury clubs show in Yate tomorrow has been cancelled due to the weather where I was due to be demonstrating. On the up side, I have plenty of logs for the burner, a curry I made last week in the freezer, plenty of wine in stock and my travelling tool kit and stuff i intended taking to the demo already in the house so winter can do its worst! Will post any progress I make before opening the wine later! Jerry 8 1 2
RMweb Gold Popular Post queensquare Posted February 1, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 1, 2019 I know there are some on here who have an interest in the Clifford menagerie. The girls always liked the snow, Jazz charged around like a loon even though she's now ten but Jelly at fourteen was much more sedate. A quick gallop to stretch their legs was all today - too cold for anything more adventurous. The chickens eventually emerged from their nesting box but only as far as the space underneath - having chucked the nice fresh bedding I gave them all over the place! The cats, well they seem pretty relaxed about the whole cold weather thing......! Will post some train related pictures later! Jerry 18 1
RMweb Gold Donw Posted February 1, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 1, 2019 After a spell of clearing paths and areas for the birds I thought I might get away with a short walk this morning but no little Holly wanted to do the normal circuit. Going across the fields facing into a biting wind was not my choice. Don

D869
Damn glad Southampton was last week. Don't think we would have made it if it was a week later. No snow chez nous though. Regards, Andy
