The Fall & Rise of the 60's ( was The End of the Tugs?)

Recommended Posts

Last of the MGR trains at Plank Ln. Bickershaw Colliery Leigh, Jan 1992. The class 60's top and tailed the very last of the MGRs from Springs branch having taken over from pairs of class 20's. The train of MGR's sat under a then up to date super -duper computerised automatic wagon loader. The loader was said to have cost 3 million quid to build and install, but lasted little more than over a year, then the the pit was closed! :O  New housing is being built on this very spot at the moment. The whole area being transformed into a 'Yuppie' village and marina, despite the desperate need for local affordable housing which was promised! :fool:

No Lindsey train any more (an extra Robeston a few days a week instead) but yes still 60s. DB have announced an extension to the Puma contract so should be 60s for the foreseeable

Thanks!

If you want to see 60s at work then the Midlands is the place to be. Here's a few shots from recently, with one from Lincolnshire too...

And a compilation I've put together of the locos I've seen in the past few months. Enjoy quarter of an hour of tugs at work!

Thanks,

Another couple of shots of tugs from today (taken during my lunch), namely 60054 on the 6E08 Wolves to Immingham steel (forgot it travels via Derby station...oops!) and 60059 on the 6E54 Kingsbury to Humber tanks.

Apologies for making this a Derbyshire-based 60 spotting thread, but here are another couple of tugs from today. 60054 has dropped onto the oil circuit, working the 6M57 0717 Lindsey Oil Refinery to Kingsbury Oil Sidings past Clay Mills (just in east Staffordshire...the far river bridge is the border!), and 60059 working the 6E54 1040 Kingsbury Oil Sdgs to Humber Oil Refinery tanks past North Staffs Jn, just south of Stenson Jn.

Both going slowly today for signals so not much noise!

Another weekend, another Tug. This time it was number 7 in 'Switch on to Safety' vinyls, working the 6E54 Kingsbury to Humber tanks, seen at Chellaston/Swarkestone south of Derby, a 10 minute walk from where I live.

Only one tug today because I missed the working the other way, but it's no issue as it had a dirty 66 on it!

Back to the 90's here in the North East. Two trains in ten minutes both hauled by a class 60. Not a 66 in sight. If I hadn't had to go to work, there would have been a third on a steel train.

Not sure which tree you mean, was it on the other side of the line? You may be able to see in one of my videos from the day, but I've never tried a shot from the other side of the bridge as it's usually wrong for the sun - when it comes out!

Some shots from Nottinghamshire today, as I visited Toton once again. Surprisingly, many 60s were out and about, including 60074 which put in a nice display of shunting with a single MXA wagon, and a fair bit of clag! 60017 also moved onto the fuelling point, whilst I just caught a shot of 60040 as it passed 60011 when running out of the shed. 60001, 60044 and 60007 were also present, the latter which must have relinquished its oil circuit turn after I saw it yesterday on 6E54. Anyway, the photos...and also nearly 10 minutes of Class 60 shunting for your visual and audible viewing pleasure! :locomotive:

Just got a heads up, just heard that GBRf might be getting at least another four, possibly as many as ten Class 60’s from DBC as something to do with the HS2 project. Not sure if they will be for spares or repair.

Just one 60 from me today, but she did sound good! Drax livery 60066 led the 6M57 0717 Lindsey Oil Refinery to Kingsbury Oil Sdgs tanks through Willington in South Derbyshire.

A few shots from Derbyshire again, my current county of residence, however this time from much further north at Great Rocks Jn, just south of Peak Dale and next to Tunstead Quarry. The loco was 60039, aptly named 'Dove Holes', and the working was the 6H02 from Arpley Sidings to Tunstead. It then ran round and departed towards Peak Dale.

WNXX news page suggests the original tender list of 3 (60004/014/018) plus 60008 from the 2nd list have been bought for spares by GBRF.

The remaining 7 of the 2nd tender are part of ongoing negotiations but it doesn’t say who with or if spares or repair.
