RMweb Gold TravisM Posted December 5, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 5, 2019 (edited) I was informed yesterday that 60081 which was purchased by LSL has since been sold on to Raxstar. Is there any truth in this? If it is true, I can understand LSL having second thoughts about this loco as it’s in quite poor condition, the power unit is badly damaged with a leg out the bed and where the piston exited, there’s nice gaping hole in the bodyside. Jack374
Couple of DB examples this lunchtime (click to Flickr link), with the latter in rude health!! Also a video below of 60046 at Derby: Of interest, 60055 is due out of the Toton paint facility imminently having been seen in DC Rail grey with original name (which escapes me now). Jack374
Some more tug shots from me, including 60055 and 60046 at Derby. The latter had failed and was replaced this week with DB's surviving active EWS example, 60065, speculated as being a 'warranty lease' as DB overhauled 46. Steadfast
A couple of pics of 055 at Westbury this week. Always had a bit of a soft spot for 'Thomas Barnardo' since dad got me a Lima model of it in coal sector livery as a kid. This is a bit of a test, linking pics from my Flickr for the first time sussing out how it works! DC Rail's 60055 'Thomas Barnardo' has just arrived at Westbury with 6Z90 from Southampton Up Yard. The engine has been run round and is ready to begin the shunt to get the wagons into the New Sidings for loading. The loco was only a week or two out from it's overhaul by DB at Toton and the wagons have been in the UK less than a month, so all very box fresh! 60055 Westbury 6Z90 by SteadfastFotography, on Flickr A day later, the weather had turned! The blue wagons add some colour to a very grey shot as 60055 'Thomas Barnardo' sits in the New Sidings at Westbury, where the wagons will be loaded with recycled ballast for use as Type 1 aggregate. Spoil from worksites is unloaded here and put through a screening machine to create the recycled aggregate. Popular Post Steadfast
I've uploaded a few red 60s too now, so here we go. 60039 Westbury Yard Pilot by SteadfastFotography, on Flickr On a gorgeous September morning, 60039 'Dove Holes' sits in the spoil offload siding in Westbury's New Sidings with a heavy load of two Coalfish wagons for offload. Over the final summer of Mendip operations for DB, a trio of tugs made it to the area (024, 039 and 044) to cover for class 59s out on maintenance Fareham bound Tug 44 by SteadfastFotography, on Flickr 60044 'Dowlow' is sat in Westbury Down Yard waiting its 05:00 departure with 7O35 to Fareham. The 16 boxes won't challenge the 60, but it was a regular turn that the trio of 60s took on whilst in the area during summer 2019. Cold War Competitors by SteadfastFotography, on Flickr Both designs dating from the tail end of the Cold War and capable of shifting the heaviest trains in the UK, 59002 'Alan J Day' and 60039 'Dove Holes' sit alongside one another in Westbury Up Yard. The two locos are wildly different designs, the 59s proving rugged, reliable and a simple machine, though a little agricultural and noisy at times. Class 60s would also move the earth, though their 1980s electronics could leave them susceptible to having a funny five minutes and various issues on introduction but they are an altogether far more refined design, quiet with a smooth ride and solid doors that close first time! Posing for a portrait by SteadfastFotography, on Flickr Looking powerful from the low angle, 60039 'Dove Holes' sits in Westbury Up Yard awaiting its next duty. A purposeful looking design, where thought has gone into the aesthetics and practical aspects, this thirty year old loco is still looking smart. The end of the Mendip contract looked like the end of class 60s in Westbury, but in December DCR brought 60055 in for a few loads of recycled ballast. rob D2
Looks nice in stealth grey. the environmentalists and the inability to build new 66s now, seem to have saved a lot of classic traction

Steadfast
A couple more Tug pics I've uploaded this evening An Teallach by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr 60091, the former 'An Teallach', now named 'Barry Needham' after an EWS controller who passed away, is seen sat inside the shed at Whatley. How things were... by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr Will we ever see a class 60 at Whatley again? 60100 basks in the summer sun waiting for its next duty. Whatley bound empties by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr 60024 'Clitheroe Castle' in Westbury Down Yard with 7V16, the empties from Fareham for Whatley. The train has been run round and brake tested and is ready to go when the panel let it out. 60019 Westbury by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr 60019 'Port of Grimsby and Immingham' stabled in Westbury Up Yard on a summer afternoon. Westbury is a Network Rail LDC, so much of the work is involved with loading, unloading and marshalling of traffic for maintenance of the raiway. Sixty skirting the Severn by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr 60011 rounds the curve at Purton on the banks of the river Severn as it leads 6B41 Westerleigh - Robeston empty tanks. Smoky 60 by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr 60065 'Spirit of Jaguar' posing during a night shift at Westbury whilst allocated yard pilot / driver training. Being an un-overhauled machine, it wasn't always the healthiest of things and it tended to produce a bit of a smoke screen when the throttle was opened up! It was used to top a London bound service one night and failed on the approach to Acton. After much fiddling and several attempted starts, the loco looked dead. No fuel to the engine was one of several issues on the computer. Eventually it was towed dead to South Wales for onward travel to Toton General Hospital. In South Wales, some more fitters had a look, turned out the fuelling issue was lack of fuel in the tank! The gauge had got stuck on 3/4. Moral of the story, give the tank a tap with a hammer first! Hope they're still interesting! Jo

SWT442
Good to see plenty of contributions to the thread, and good to see the Class 60 is on the up! Here's a few from me taken late last year, all except one taken at Mottisfont & Dunbridge, a favourite spot of mine. Most were taken during the short spell when a trio of the class were based at Westbury to supplement the Class 59's. 60024 "Clitheroe Castle" rumbles toward the camera with 6V16 Fareham ARC to Whatley Quarry - 13.08.2019 60024 "Clitheroe Castle" seen again, this time with the early evening 7O40 Merehad Quarry to Eastleigh Aggregates Sidings - 23.08.2019 Seemingly stalking me, 60024 "Clitheroe Castle" is in the limelight at Dean as it again works 6V16 Fareham ARC to Whatley Quarry. The hazy exhaust had a distinctly oily smell to it - 02.09.2019 A change of Tug at last! 60044 "Dowlow" passes the gardening team as it works 7V16 Fareham ARC to Whatley Quarry - 25.09.2019 Ex-works and with a box fresh set of JNA's, DCR's 60055 "Thomas Barnardo" catches the early morning winter Sun with 6Z90 Southampton Up Yard to Westbury Down TC, a working that lasted 2 weeks. The last few days of this working saw a hired in DB Class 66 used due to the loco developing a TPWS fault - 17.12.2019 Here's to more Tug action for 2020. Andy.
SWT442
A couple of videos if you wish to watch. First is DCR's 60055 on the first working to Southampton Up Yard at the start of the 2 week stint of aggregates being moved from Westbury. The second video features a selection of Class 60's around the Southampton, Eastleigh & Romsey areas between 2012 & 2019. Andy.
Steadfast
Nice pics and vids Andy, good few Westbury based workings on there. Sadly can't see a red 60 appearing in this neck of the woods again any time soon, if 2019 was a last hurrah it was good to have three at the same time! I believe the 60s came down because several 59s had prolonged outages Jo 1
Jack374
Thankfully this week DC Rail's 60055 'Thomas Barnardo' stopped at Stenson whilst working to Neath Abbey Wharf. Up the 'Tugs'! Jack.

Jack374
(Flickr link) 60029 returned to the national network yesterday in patchwork livery. It had a test run with 60074, which needed attention shortly after my previous pic of the volcanic eruption... Note the orange cab roof...it looks very shiny and clean so may be a replacement made specially and not robbed from another 60. Either that or orange was the only primer colour they had to hand? Will it be blue or (a version of) grey? Jack.
