The Fall & Rise of the 60's ( was The End of the Tugs?)

Recommended Posts

60092 and 60011 within half hour of each other at Northwich this evening. 92 was doing the honours on the Tunstead to Lostock Hoppers drawing forward then setting back into the works 18:05 to 18:17. Running a bit later than expected at 18:30 was a STP path Warrington Arpley to Peak Forest headed up by 60011 with 66084, 66165 and two empty MMA box wagons in tow - wagons may be fresh from repair. A toot and a thumbs up from the driver Ian Jordan too as he passed through the station.

Cheers Paul

you may be able to see it from the canal that runs along the back of the depot

edit: looking at it on google maps its probably not viewable, you may see the top of it from the bank

Thanks Jim. I tried on Friday to look from the canal (trees and ballast pile in the way) but probably didn’t go far enough across the bank to check. Maybe one for winter as the leaves are fewer.

I've just put a few more 60 pics on Flickr. Clicking the picture will take you there! A couple of recent ones to start, and a couple from 2011 a the end.

The weather was naff but I was twiddling my thumbs at home so thought I'd stay local and nip out here to Coalpit Heath. I was going to try a shot across the horse field (thus, though an Up working: flic.kr/p/2iKHDzT) but it has grown up massively since my last visit here a month or two back. I think the loco plus one would have fitted the gap, but I ventured off for a plan B. Checking the shot from the bridge, it looked passable as a Voyager went by, but an on the ball signalman meant the Tug was right behind the Cross Country after Westerleigh Junction. No time to go back to the original spot, so here's 60046 'William Wilberforce' seen from the footbridge at Ram Hill working 5Z23 Wembley - Bristol Barton Hill with Mk3 12627 in tow. Even kneeling down didn't get low enough to get the roof of the loco under that darn cable!

A nice sunny July afternoon so a walk with the camera was in order. Parking up in Saltford, a short walk brought me this bridge, just east of Pixash Lane. 60054 has just exited Saltford Tunnel at the head of 6B33 Theale - Robeston on its approach to Keynsham.

Roll back nine years, here's one of the pair of Tugs that received trial parts before the 'Super Sixty' refurbs began. Former Mainline blue 60011 received the revised electronics, whilst 60099 received modifications to its engine. 60011 is passing Westerleigh village a couple of minutes into its journey with 6B47 Westerleigh - Robeston.

Along with 60011, 60099 was the other loco to gain trial parts for the class 60 overhaul program. This loco had its engine upgraded, with 011 having work done on the electronics. The Tata Steel branded silver sixty is seen passing Coalpit Heath working 6B33 Theale - Robeston. Nine years later, this shot has totally changed. Yes the first and last shots are from the same bridge!

A very late Humber to Westerleigh early this morning lead to a late return north and a reward for the photographer....

60091 had it's engine shut down between Brocklesby and Melton Ross the night before. I'm surprised it was dragged dead all the way to Westerliegh and back.

Thanks for that, not sure what the run round tracks are like at Westerleigh but it must have been a little more taxing than normal for the driver to put 60091 between 60020 and the train, still he had 8 hours to do it....

DCR 60029 'Ben Nevis' - 6M00, Barrow

Reportedly for 'mileage accumulation', DCR 60029 hauled its first train for many years today - and the first oil working for DCR I believe. It hauled the DB Cargo 6M00 Humber to Kingsbury tanks, seen at Barrow on Trent.

Thanks,

Jack.

60074 in its new livery is on today's 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh. Typically, back in work on the first day of seven for me, hopefully it sticks until next week!

Jo

According to a local gen group it has failed and a 1Z99 is on the way to rescue
