The Fall & Rise of the 60's ( was The End of the Tugs?)

So, if this is a loaded train, and a shed can pull a dead 60 and the train....why do they not use a shed all the time becuase I’m sure they would if they could ?

is it a timing thing ?

The gradients in Wales are too steep for a single shed on its own. On the flat it would be ok but would take an age to get upto speed

60074 was back in service the next day, so can't have been too major. Been to Trostre and Newport a few times. Annoying to happen on the first trip though! Apparently the name is something to do with someone at Puma, will update if I hear more.

Any truth in what I was told today on the jungle drums that GBRf are looking to acquire 10+ more Class 60’s?  Personally I think it’s the fantasy of someone’s over active mind but I thought I’d ask.

I wonder what loco has been involved in the derailment and fire in wales.

reports it was the Murco  train, so strong chance it was A 60

Reports are 60062, although the loco and first few tanks pulled away from the rest of the train. I’ve seen a picture (not shareable unfortunately) of the loco, with reds on the front, and a handful of wagons, with the rather large blaze behind.

Some recent class 60 pics from me, clicking them will take you to Flickr should you so desire. The first one is 2010, the others are the last few weeks.

50232609451_f3b7651f46_b.jpg60071 7C28 Fairwood Jn by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr

Flashing yellows on the way up from Frome and a feather at W103 tells the driver of 60071 'Ribblehead Viaduct' that he's hanging a left at Fairwood Junction, where it's seen on the approach to Westbury whilst working 7C28 Exeter - Whatley empty stone. The train would round at Westbury before heading on to Whatley, repassing this location. Unfortunately I couldn't stick around for the return, and if I had there was a risk the 60 could've been ripped for a 59 or 66 during the run round anyway.

Recently repainted 60074 'Luke' in the DB Cargo / Puma Energy customer livery roars up Filton bank at Ashley Hill Footbridge with a late running 6B33 Theale - Robeston.

The Network Rail vegetation clearance has opened this shot up, I can't remember ever being here with this great a view. 60044 'Dowlow' is the subject, creeping steadily south, dodging the clouds. The train is 6B13 Robeston - Westlerleigh, seen having just exited Wickwar Tunnel and passing Hall End Overbridge, near Rangeworthy

After a few months absence from the Liverpool Biomass Terminal-Drax Power Station workings, GBRf class 60s have recently returned.

A still image taken from a video - 60096 at Hebden Bridge on 12th September 2020 with 6E10, 09.55 Liverpool Biomass Terminal to Drax Power Station, loaded biomass hoppers.

The Tyne Dock working to Drax have been non existent in the last couple of weeks. The ships must be using Liverpool only for a while. Here is 60076 at Yarm the last time I saw a Tyne Dock - Drax working.

That probably helps explain why at the moment virtually all the daily diagrams in the Working Timetable between Liverpool Bulk Terminal and Drax are in operation - 5 to 6 loaded workings each day, plus the corresponding returns.

My video of the working through Hebden Bridge on 12th September was one of 3 loaded workings within the space of about 5 hours during the afternoon.  That’s unusual for a Saturday when, generally, there aren’t any loaded workings during daylight hours.

DB's operational class 60 fleet took another blow on the 14th after 60015 couldn't take power at Willington, south of Derby. DRS 66430 (which was behind) pushed the train into Sunny hill loop just south of Derby, then 67028 was despatched as 1Z99 to take the train on some 3 hrs late. I headed to Derby station to see it:

DB 67028 & 60015 DIT - 6E08, Derby

DB 60015 & 67028 - 6E08, Derby

Thanks,

Jack.

A handful of recent 60 uploads, they're linked from Flickr, so click for a bigger version!

One from 2015 to begin.

50355747696_85b74e2f5e_b.jpg60017 6B13 Gossington by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr

I've not seen any shots from this spot for a few years, so I presume the bushes have grown up and killed it off. A grubby 60017 is passing Gossington at the head of 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh. As can be seen from the comments on Flickr, looks like the shot is back on!

2019 now.

50360656718_59f46e2171_b.jpg60001 7V98 Westbury by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr

Overnight freight trains often have the luxury of running early. 60001 was over two hours early getting back to Westbury with 7V98 from Eastleigh. However, once it got to Merehead it would be sat waiting for the morning shunter to book on and let it in, so the driver elected to wait at Westbury for a couple of hours, where the driver's cabin is better equipped than that at Merehead. Having run round and ready to go closer to right time, 60001 sits under the yard lights at Westbury on a set of O&K hoppers. 7V98 is the return working of 7C59 and 7O43, the Merehead - Westbury (run round and headcode change) - Eastleigh stone.

Finally, a pair from last week:

50355574501_86b76939e0_b.jpgLarge Logo Tug by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr

DB Cargo's 60062 'Stainless Pioneer' is going well as it passes Standish Junction with 6B41 Westerleigh - Robeston empty tanks, the golden field helping the colours in the shot, but also a sign that the year is drawing on.

50355576436_14d6e7b371_b.jpg60074 6B13 Standish Jn by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr

60074 'Luke' at the helm of 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh was let out from Gloucester in front of 1V50, so it had an unscheduled stop in Haresfield Loop and is seen accelerating away from that stop as it passes Standish Junction.

I was not well positioned for it when it came through Brighouse about 20 minutes earlier - I was waiting for 56113 & 090 which were on 6E32 and due any minute.

Some welcome Tug action came to the Solent area over the last 2 days, with DCR's 60055 "Thomas Barnardo" putting in an appearance.

Having run down early Wednesday morning from Willesden to Eastleigh with a rake of VTG Blue JNA's, it worked an early afternoon loaded train from the East Yard to Southampton Up Yard, conveying old ballast and spoil. An unusual aspect of the working was it running round in the Up Goods Loop just outside of Southampton Central, instead of running direct into the Up Yard. With the weather not being all that great, and suspecting it would run into the Up Yard anyway, I gave it a miss. However, having watched it on Traksy, it did indeed do as it was supposed to, so I took a punt and went to the footbridge on Saxon Road today to capture the run-round in action. Thankfully, the weather held out! As I type this, the train has already left the Up Yard and is heading back to Willesden, but with a twist again, as it runs back via the West Coastaway and Arun Valley routes to get back to base.

Here's some pics:

With the train snaking across all the tracks on the station throat, 60055 arrives into the Up Goods Loop with 6Z91 Eastleigh East Yard to Southampton Up Yard.

Having detached and run forward to Millbrook station, it then runs along the Up Fast towards Southampton Central, before setting back onto the wagons.

As 444045 & 444002 sweep round the curve away from Southampton Central with 1W67 London Waterloo to Bournemouth & Weymouth, 60055 awaits the right away. In the Down Goods Loop, 66737 "Lesia" has just pulled up with 4M51 Southampton Western Docks to Trafford Park intermodal.
