The Fall & Rise of the 60's ( was The End of the Tugs?)

Recommended Posts

Blue 60 on Thursday, linked from my Flickr if you want to see it bigger.

60028 6Z73 Winterbourne

After an overcast start to the day, the weather brightened up in time for this. Contrary to the popular opinion, I prefer the DCR grey 60s to this blue one, but 60028 still looks smart enough working 6Z73 Tytherington - Willesden DCR, carrying stone bound for Calvert and HS2.

The "end of the tugs"…long live the tugs…

In complete contrast to the reason for this thread starting, yesterday all 3 current class 60 operators' locos passed through North Stafford Junction within half an hour. Below pics linked from Flickr mostly…

First was DCR 60046, working from Ravenhead Sidings to Chaddesden Sidings:

DCR 60046 - 6Z19, North Stafford Jn

Then Big Jim of this forum was the driver of GBRf 60002, making a rare appearance on this line taking some weed killer KFA flats from Derby RTC to Bescot:

GBRf 60002 - 6Z44, North Stafford Jn

Finally, DB's silver 60066 with a delayed Wolverhampton to Toton (for onward transit to Boston Docks) steel…

DB 60066 - 6D08, North Stafford Jn

Thanks,

A couple from Tees yard on my way home from the Darlington exhibition

60020 on the fueler and 60044 towing 66198 away on the Scunthorpe Steel. I was told that the 66 was derailed earlier in the day and was being taken to Toton for inspection. That is what I was told - I was not there to see it myself. There are another 4 class 66 in the yard so it could have been one of them derailed.

With the Calder Valley line currently closed around Summit Tunnel* at Littleborough for engineering work, freight is being rerouted along the Huddersfield line.

On 23rd October 2021 GBRf 60076 Dunbar approaches Deighton with 6E10, 11.07 Liverpool Biomass Terminal to Drax Power Station, loaded biomass hoppers.

Sitting with some RMWebbers at The Tap 60066 came near to a halt and then took off,  video at https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/class60/ecb5f6319 and

This appears to be a standard Class 60 booking. Class 60s are common through York - I caught 3 in five minutes on the avoiding line earlier this summer.   https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/class60

My favourite diesel loco, so good they are making a comeback.

A recent trip to the Midlands netted a little bit of 'Tug' action, with shots of the unlucky ones the main target. First up though are the lucky ones, still in use doing what they do best.

60s only seem to appear for the leaf fall season on this duty. That's been the case for about 4 years now.

Just missed getting a shot of 60054 at Didcot the other day with it's running on HVO logos, so instead,

coming out of the setting sun at Barnetby, Mainline Blue 60078 in happier days, albeit with 'Beastie' and 'First' logos...

A very rare occurrence today…the sole working maroon class 60 was allowed to leave Toton, and with a load no less! 60065 'Spirit of Jaguar' made a spirited departure on the 6E02 steel 'pig pens' to Boston Sleaford Sidings…

DB 60065 - 6E02, Toton

This is true - it’s not only the sole surviving maroon one but also the only un-refurbished (non-super) sixty to have run in recent years. It definitely sounds better than the quieter 'super sixties' IMO.

Unfortunately, word is that it failed with low power on the return 6M08 to Wolves, which only got as far as Toton, and very late. It was entrusted with a service train, but didn’t quite make it…such a shame as I’ve got a soft spot for this one.

And on to the demics. The pictures were taken on a guided tour of Toton Depot for a closed group, with no area off limits. I'm very grateful to those who arranged it and took us round. All pictures taken on the 9th October.

First of the class, 60001, sits on the fuel point having just arrived from Doncaster.

Making for a forlorn sight, 60067 sits at the head of the main row of stored 60's. Who knows what future awaits.

Still wearing the attractive Aircraft Blue of Mainline Freight, 60078 makes a change to the rows of EWS liveried locos.

Having been stored for some 14 years, 60033 'Tees Steel Express' clings onto its Corus silver colours.

60012 bookends the main row of locos, whilst 60048 sits at the head of a shorter row of abandoned 'Tugs'.

Despite being stored away for so long, quite a few locos still retained their nameplates. Should've bought some tools along...

60038 & 60059 'Swinden Dalesmen' catch some afternoon sun behind the depot building. It was said that some of the 60's offered up for sale recently had been purchased, but it wasn't elaborated on who had and what they were destined for. Perhaps we'll see 60038 on the mainline again?

Acting as a super shunter, 60065 'Spirit of Jaguar' idles away in the ballast sidings.

The beating heart of any Class 60 is this turbocharged straight-8 monster, a 145 litre Mirrlees Blackstone 8MB275T, set to put out 3,100hp at 1,000rpm.

This WIPAC light clusters hair raising days are long behind it.

Andy.

It's sad to see the 60's just dumped like this. Most of them probably only saw 10 - 15 years service, they could have all been in service still today had they not been side tracked in favour of buying in new locos with similar haulage power, bit of a waste of money in my opinion. Hopefully a fair few will see service again someday, but in the meantime, it's great to see photos of those still giving great service on the mainline.

Finally managed to get 60055 at Brandon, not very common (not even sure it's worked here before), and to prove my point it was swapped for 60029 a couple of hours later.

60028 at Tolworth today with the 6Z36 Chessington South-Willesden DC sidings, a new trial run for DCR with the recently opened Chessington South terminal, hopefully a good sign of things to come for the branch

NL

The trial was a success, regular services will be running down the branch. Given the cost of bringing it back into use, it’s a good job it is a success, it’s also a great win for rail.

GBRf 60087 powers towards Brighouse on 21st December 2021 with 6M36, 09.54 Drax to Liverpool Biomass Terminal, empty biomass hoppers.

They're obviously busy at Drax at the moment as six daily workings from Liverpool Biomass Terminal and the corresponding empty returns are operating - 6E36, 6E09, 6E10, 6E24, 6E27 & 6E34 in departure  order according to the Working Timetable.
