The Fall & Rise of the 60's ( was The End of the Tugs?)

Recommended Posts

Freightmaster would have the times, but IIRC there is an overnight train from immingham.

Certainly I drive round the M25 to gatwick for 6 1/2 years and more often than not between 5-7 am there would be a light loco sitting waiting to come back up the branch , normally on the N side if the A4 bridge . Mostly this was a 66 in recent years.

Also look out for the sand (?) workings to the London cement complex normally a FL 66

Thanks Rob,

After having a good look, I shall have to try a subscription to Freightmaster.

I did see a train of tankers in there at about midday Wednesday but I could not stop as I was going

to see Duke of Gloucester at Windsor.

Cheers

Andy

A few recent class 60s from me. A little further afield than normal aswell! I'm really thinking the title of the thread should be changed now, too!

Here's 60079 on 6B33 Theale - Robeston passing the Roman Road (Fosseway) near Hullavington 24/5/12

post-6899-0-90892700-1339156102_thumb.jpg

On the way to Showcase (1/6/12) we went up to Peak Forest. 60059 was on the Tunstead - Oakleigh circuit, here approaching Peak Forest with 6H03 to Tunstead

post-6899-0-43924000-1339156118_thumb.jpg

The loco then returned light to stable, seen here before reversing into the sidings

post-6899-0-72083800-1339156125_thumb.jpg

Later on, the loco returned to Tunstead...

post-6899-0-14436500-1339156140_thumb.jpg

...before emerging with the loaded hoppers on 6F05 Tunstead - Oakleigh. Does anyone know is it just a single set of hoppers with a couple of spares? Turn around seemed very swift at Tunstead, particularly a Freightliner stone that came in after the 60 and left before it

post-6899-0-90738400-1339156148_thumb.jpg

Good to see the name retained

post-6899-0-86174500-1339156154_thumb.jpg

Finally 60059 departs Great Rocks Junction heading for Peak Forest and onwards to Oakleigh. It was great to hear a 60 getting 2400t away with ease, it sounded fantastic

Thanks Jon, it's a shot I've wanted to do for ages!

One from a couple of weeks back here, 60074 on 6B33 Theale - Robeston at Shrivenham 31/5/12

Today saw a 60 on Mendip stone for the first time in a few months, last autumn if my memory serves me right.

60011 powering 6V18 Hither Green - Whatley past Edington, a few miles east of Westbury 11/6/12

60011 spotted at Eastleigh this morning on the 6O41 Westbury - Eastleigh engineers service. 66182 Dit behind. 60039 was still in the yard, no movement though.

#update# 60011 has replaced 60039 as the Eastleigh Super shunter. 60039 is off to St Blazey for a lie down.

Seeing Jo's shot of 60074 prompted me to root out my shot of it when it had one of its first runs (6E41 Westerleigh to Lindsey) in that scheme. Amazing to think it was a mere 4 years ago....

As for recent images, they're virtually non-existent, thanks in part to the weather not being entirely conducive to photting and 60071 seeming to dominate 6E38. A bit like this one from last month (when the sun did indeed exist).......

I'm still hoping 60099 deigns to turn up on the southern end of the MML sometime or other. Ever the optimist?

A minor thing I have spotted Jo from one of your shots of 059 is that the flap containing the multi working socket is open.

This may not seem much, but EWS riveted them shut to prevent multying up a pair of 60's - I would like to see a pair with an umbilical cord working hard!! Good shots as usual matey!

Taking advantage of the long summer days.......................

This is 60074 on 6A11 Robeston - Theale approaching Little Bedwyn at 5:05 AM !!................

Not too bad considering the low light level & use of 200ASA

post-5198-0-85242500-1340293142_thumb.jpg

and later on returning to Robeston with 6B33 from Theale - the oft-repeated view east from South Moreton near Didcot.

Much better at 64ASA despite the recent clouding over (as usual for this train !!)

Whilst waiting on the A52 bridge by Toton this afternoon. Had a quick 20 second look over towards the depot. I saw a very clean and shiny DBS liviered Tug, being towed by an 08. Its a pity that the majority of the the tugs there will never turn a wheel in anger again!

Is it an optical illusion or is the DB Schenker name on the side of 60040 a bit larger than the others done so far?

Hi John,

I think you may be right. I wondered if it was the telephoto creating the illusion, but I'm not convinced. I've tried to find a similar angled shot of another one - here's 60054

Cheers,

Mick

From New Mills yesterday (25/6), "Switch on to Safety" heading back to the quarries. The red looks fine against the greenery.

On the Goyt viaduct

Up at the crack of the lark this morning to see 60074 (again!) tugging the 6A11 Robeston - Theale tanks through Pewsey.not long after the sun has allegedly hauled itself into the Wiltshire sky over Pewsey ........just too dark for a still so took a MPEG for a change. but it's too big to upload so you'll just have to imagine how good it sounded...............

60015 was hauling 6F81 from Liverpool Docks to Fiddlers Ferry yesterday. I made the dash to catch it and heres the result. 60054 passed the other way 5 minutes later. This was my first shot from this location as the footbridge has been replaced in preparation for the 'wires'. Andy

Southernman...

Do you have any details on workings tomorrow ?

I've got a job to do in Reading you see... Combining trainspotting with work.

Any info appreciated

Regards

Nick

Southernman - I got it at the concrete bridge at Shrivenham today - oh so close I was to stopping at Callow Hill to attempt a second shot, but stayed on the motorway. You don't drive a red car by any chance?
