The Fall & Rise of the 60's ( was The End of the Tugs?)

Recommended Posts

Southernman - I got it at the concrete bridge at Shrivenham today - oh so close I was to stopping at Callow Hill to attempt a second shot, but stayed on the motorway. You don't drive a red car by any chance?

jo

One of my favourite spots that footbridge - need to do Shrivenham station road bridge but can't be bothered experiencing the traffic

Aye, that was me - luckily it's possible to park (and keep the air-con on) and see down trains with plenty of warning.

Saw 4V60 Soton - Wentloog FLT, a down coal (which I was expecting) and 6B33 (which I was hopeful for) all within 2 hours

Tomorrow it's booked to run again (according to Freightlocate) so here's hoping.

Southernman...

Do you have any details on workings tomorrow ?

I've got a job to do in Reading you see... Combining trainspotting with work.

Any info appreciated

Regards

Nick

Hi Nick,

It's been booked to run on TWTH this week

Arrives at Theale Murco (07/12) - normally runs 20-45 mins early, departs Theale Murco (13/35) - can run 20 early and thence via Reading West (13/47) and Didcot Parkway (14/16). It ran Weds & today so it SHOULD run tomorrow too.

Regards,

Tony

I will see what I can do.

I looked at Theale the other day when passing. The sidings don't look that long - I assume they split the train and that the 60 does a bit of shunting. The day I passed it was a 66.

Good luck.

Nick

Wasn't too bad the time I did it. Constant flow of traffic, but provided its just you (or maybe one other) there's room tucked in against the bridge. I've taken photos in worse traffic :D The lineside shrubbery has grown up a lot though recently

Ooooh air con....lucky guy! :D

I missed the coal and everything else, but here's 6B33 passing Shrivenham today

Out of interest, do you know if the time on your camera's correct? If so it did Shrivenham to Callow Hill in 15 minutes - impressive for a weekday!

Yes the train is split for unloading - the 66 was possibly on 6E55 which is the Lindsey train (normally on Weds/Fris) although very occasionally the Robeston is a 66. The Robeston seems to running more oin a Wednesday than a Tuesday these days.

Hi Jo,

Yup it's about right so it probably did - the Cardiff it is booked to run behind was running late so it must have been was given the road.

Regards,

Tony

That'd make sense! 15.13 HST if my memory serves me right

6B33 doesn't look likely tomorrow, according to 60gen 60074 worked 0B33 Robeston - Margam, so I expect it to work a steel to Dee Marsh or Round Oak, or stay in South Wales tomorrow :(

Read through the last few pages and noticed a bit of an omission.

On Thursday 14th June, 60091 worked the 6B94 Fawley - Eastleigh oil train, where I captured it heading past Millbrook. It of course worked the service into Fawley from Eastleigh. I believe it also worked Fawley train on the 15th as well.

I did want to catch '091 on the branch as it's just a stones throw from the house, but couldn't think of anywhere to get a decent shot of it! It's been a long time since I can remember a Tug working on the branch.

Anyway, there's some great shots on here, would like to catch 6B33 sometime. Looks like an impressive train!

Andy.

Thursday found me in Cardiff on a course - so thanks to the 60gen site knew 6B33 was running - not a particularly photogenic shot but 60074 tugging up the bank into Cardiff Central.........had to literally time this shot between the Seagulls (look closely) :O

Hi All ,

had a bit of a wait this morning at Plumley for 6H03 Oakleigh-Tunstead came in a VSTP path at 11:47 , 1 hour later than booked. I was hoping for 60045 which had been on the circuit for a few days but 60054 was rostered today. I also was fortunate that the sun came out too ..........

Cracking picture - sunshine, semaphores AND a 60 - very rare to get all three!

Last Thursday, 60059 on its recent visit to the capital - tugging 6E38 out of West Drayton back to Lindsey.

Typically an hour late and 1/2 hour after the sun had disappeared for the next 3 days...............

Up at the crack of the lark today again.................

60054 passing Newbury with 6A11 Robeston - Theale at 05:27 just as the sun was rising - got a bit bounced by the Turbot in the up platform.

and some 9 hours later approaching Cholsey with the 6B33 return empties.

and then following a tip-off across to Patney on the B&H to see 60049 working the 1440 6C76 Acton - Merehead stone empties

I thought of heading to North Wales today to photograph the A4 steam Locomotive 60009, but I decided to head over to Cheshire to try and phot 60071 Ribblehead Viaduct on 6F05 Tunstead-Oakleigh. I just about caught it at Mobberley after being stuck in traffic. I also captured it on its trip from Lostock Works to Oakleigh.

Cheers Andy

This afternoon's lovely weather allowed me to almost entirely recreate a shot of the same loco on the same train just 7 years apart. The train is 6E39 Colnbrook to Lindsey and the location is just opposite Luton Hoo, south of Parkway station.

Here's today's:

post-6712-0-52939000-1343148476_thumb.jpg

... and here's the one from yesteryear:

Much as it's lovely to see them running still (and thankfully this one with the same name), the nostalgic man in me prefers the earlier one. That one was running around an hour late, hence the sun being in a more favourable position.
