60044 looks lovely with its grubby DB livery. Interesting to see that 90021 might be off for a repaint!

According to RailCam "paint/vinyls". Looks like bogies etc have been sorted. Jack374's photos on AC thread show them better.

@Andy7 @Bill Radford

Rumoured to be another Malcolm loco from what I've heard, though I'd also heard 034 would be gaining the vinyls. Wait and see I guess!

On the topic of 60s, got a pair of red ones still with Schenker stickers earlier (17 and 20) on the Westerleigh workings today and DCR 029 in Bristol on Wednesday. Will try to process the pictures and upload sooner rather than later

According to WNXX, it would appear that Cappagh/DCR have shown interest in all, or at least the lion's share of the Class 60's that were on the latest DBC.  Interestingly, they won't be overhauled at Toton.

A couple of lunchtime regulars through Barrow on Trent (south of Derby) on Thursday 10th...regular if DB can find enough tugs to deploy on the oil flows! Both pics are Flickr links.

Firstly 60019 on a Kingbsury to Lindsey...

DB 60019 - 6E54, Barrow

Then DCR 60055 working Burton on Trent to Wembley:

DCR 60055 - 6Z47, Barrow

Thanks,

Jack.

Now confirmed that Cappagh/DCR has acquired all the 14 class 60s offered by DB Cargo for sale by tender last August.

This is great news! I guess they'll be using some for parts, but we could see another ten 60's refurbished and active at some point?

I thought 60500 (60016) was on the tender list as well?

A few recent ones from me, linked from Flickr. The first one is a flash back to August 2019, but recently uploaded as I found it on my phone.

Ghost of Mendip Past

How things used to be, it's unlikely we'll ever see another 60 on a Mendip service. Sitting in Westbury Down Yard atop a rake of green VTG JNAs, originally built for Railtrack bulk ballast flows, 60044 'Dowlow' is Fareham bound if memory serves me right, which would make this 6O35.

Forward to November 2021:

60046 6Z24 Newton St Loe

Gloomy weather but an hour out of the house. and a pair of Tugs. First up, the late running 6Z24 from Bristol Freightliner terminal to Willesden is heading by DCR's 60046 'William Wilberforce' passes an autumnal Newton St Loe.

60010 6B33 Newton St Loe

A quick nip down the road got me in position for the second 60, naked DB red 60010 at the head of 6B33 Theale - Robeston passing Newton St Loe. The remnants of this year's pumpkin field are visible, all about to be ploughed up as the farmer started on the field whilst I was waiting.

Now back to February 2022:

60020 6B41 Hall End, Rangeworthy

60020 'The Willows' could be heard for a while approaching this spot, with its train of discharged tanks from Westerleigh passing Hall End, near Wickwar, with 6B41 for Robeston.

60017 6B13 Hall End, Rangeworthy

60017 passes Hall End, Rangeworthy, near Wickwar, working 6B13 loaded tanks from Robeston - Westerleigh. This is one of a small number of 60s to retain its Schenker branding alongside the DB logo.

60040 1Z18 Rhoose

Running late thanks to swans on the line, 60040 'The Territorial Army Centenary' passes Rhoose working 'The Cwmbargoed Collier' charter, running as 1Z18 Banbury to Cwmbargoed. Aberthaw's disused power station is on the skyline.

Last Tug to Cwmbargoed?

With the Cwmbargoed branch on borrowed time, could this be both the last class 60 and the last charter to Cwmbargoed? Running nearly an hour late thanks to swans on the line, 60040 passes Bedlinog in horrendously dark conditions, but well worth recording as it nears journey's end on 1Z18 Banbury - Cwmbargoed.

Another trio of recent Tugs, linked from my Flickr. Click to see them bigger!

Viewed from Alexandra Park, 60028 rolls through bath at the head of 6Z50 Willesden DCR - Machen.

51976919517_f699fd9368_b.jpgNaked Tug by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr

Looking similar to the 59/2s after their sale to Freightliner, still very much DB owned and operated, but unbranded, 60010 passes Newton St Loe working 6B33 Theale - Robeston.

51973694794_953bcbc1ac_b.jpgOxford bound blue Brush by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr

DCR have been working trains between Machen Quarry near Newport and Oxford Banbury Road for the last few weeks. 6Z61, the loaded train to Oxford is booked to run round and wait time at Westbury for about 4 hours. 60028 is seen in the Up yard after running round in the Virtual Quarry (VQ) and moving across to an adjacent road.

Saw a photo of Toton go by on Twitter - showing the new car yard, but with some sad looking 60s infront of it.

Got me thinking about whether there's a technical reason they can not be repowered a'la' 69s etc?

The CAT 175-16 in the 68s is about eight tonnes lighter than the Mirrlees, can be made III B compliant, and in the 60 there'd be both the weight and space available to likely do so. Output is a match for the traction motors - you could even go potentially larger and derate the engine to extend reliability. Therefore you can repower with a new engine, rather than the 69 approach using grandfathered emissions.

Or are the problems the traction motors? Frame? Controls and electrics? Could you essentially drop the 68 controls into the 60 like they did with the 66 and 69?

Technical roadblocks, or business case? I remember with the 69s and 73s the business case was that repowering was about 1/3rd the cost of building new - makes sense with the 69s, but what was the engine source for the MTUs and Cummins in the 73/9?
