Newbryford's mostly Yellow workbench - "it's a drag, man......."

Recent additions to the yellow fleet are some ex. Great Western Motorail vans which I gather were converted GUVs. Some time ago I recall a kit being made, any idea where it can be found please.

I think Pete Harvey did a conversion kit for these: Although it is not showing on his website.

IIRC, the numbers are 96604-96606

Cheers,

Mick

I thought it was Model rail did them, rare as hens teeth now with no plans of a reissue according to dibber25, I may be wrong though

I wouldn't mind a couple of them myself

9708 is a generator DBSO, a bit more work than a non genny fitted one but if your using a ph designs kit it's nice and simple (even though I made a mess of mine and did more work than I needed to coz I never read the instructions Pete sent!)

The SGT pair is nice and easy to do too

62384 is a very involved coach by the look of it, lots of odd sized windows and a roller shutter in one side

As it happens it was my train on Friday night (with an added motorail coach for brake force)

The NMT project is finally underway.

So far, I've paint stripped 6 Mk3s and 3 power cars - I will be doing the full set of NMT vehicles -  975984,977984,975814, 977993, 977994, 977995, 43013, 43014 and 43062.

post-408-0-41081500-1506034677_thumb.jpg

The Mk3s are multicoloured becausee of their varied original paintwork - varying from Virgin Pretendolino livery to Great Western Merlin

I have cunning plan for the nose on 43062.............

I'm using Hornby Mk3s due to their good availability, but some of them need Roevac air vents instead of the large rectangular plenum chambers.

Previously, I have cut out a few Roevacs from spare Airfix Mk2 shells for use on the DBSO/RTOVs, but in this case I've decided to order some 3D printed ones from Shapeways. Although there's 150 in the set, I'll start using them on the next batch of Mk2s I do - which may include a Cumbrian coast DRS set..........

https://www.shapeways.com/product/PPBCLJCX8/roevac-roof-vents-4mm-v1-150-pieces?option=9102267&etId=166374344&utm_source=automated-contact&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=payment-received&utm_content=4

This has coincided with the free shipping deal at Shapeways - valid for the next 3 days.

More pics will follow as soon as possible.

Cheers,

Mick

Hi Mick

I'm looking forward to see what you do for this NMT project. I thought your original one was great. I imagine with more modern tooling and three D printing, this one will be even better.

You've done well there Mick........you lost me at Roevac

Hi Adrian,

Roevac is a vent on top. They are fitted to quite a lot of stock.

The Hornby model is fitted with the large rectangular plenum box. You can see both types of vent here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/58806173@N08/7599678486/in/photolist-czykDq-SNwsMN-q9tb8A-VXeRTt-dT2VWs-WbHnSt-USpvKU-opAwuP-W6iYSN-WzSGmy-ojerxr-ojerwp-e3Cd46-4CTQwJ-paGqrt-ebhmb5-VyKVQh-5Z6wir-hwizKg-Uejjdu-iPwfT2-HPNBft-pbdfKh-fHvTk3-osjLi2-USpvyw-USp3CC-W6iZq1-u2vNbe-rrSqT1-bxcEPR-W6iYzU-r7Puao-r7PsGo-SZGavK-pQCMUD-LCRyDd-dRhLSJ-65eAy9-fEx4tN-dRc4gp-dRhnQ7-dJDsUG-DcM48s-oiikrh-fDACs2-fDTg9W-oFaXN6-p4JKyi-64XDuE

There are three Roevac vents on the coach on the left.

BTW, the above pic is great for other roof detail.

Cheers,

Mick

The NMT project is well underway.

977993 and 977994 have identical window layouts. They are ex-TGS vehicles and basically need a half window fitting in place of the last full window (as well as all toilet windows blanked up.

One has been done with Pete Harvey etches and the other cut and shut

Both have the toilet windows blanked by filling them.

The window frame is gently cut away with a sharp (i.e. new) blade

post-408-0-46666400-1508446193_thumb.jpg

The remains are then scraped using the blade on edge

post-408-0-19408200-1508446194_thumb.jpg

Then the window openings are squared off. This makes it easier to fit a blank with squared corners, rather than having to round the corners to fit the hole.

post-408-0-30920400-1508446195_thumb.jpg

This one shows the PH window blank fitted. The toilet window has a rectangle of styrene glued in and filled/sanded.

post-408-0-54159900-1508446196_thumb.jpg

For the other coach, I cut out a toliet window from a damaged Mk3 shell that I had.

post-408-0-28551700-1508446197_thumb.jpg

Cut a similar size hole in the recipient and fit scraps of styrene to mount the  window into

Fit window

and fill

post-408-0-74176700-1508446199_thumb.jpg

Gently file and sand and a quick dusting of primer

post-408-0-69052000-1508446200_thumb.jpg

Just a couple of blemishes to fix

More later.

More work on 977993.

A large hole appears in the roof

post-408-0-66113100-1508527227_thumb.jpg

And a floor for the well

post-408-0-53391500-1508527228_thumb.jpg

Inner sides and ends fitted

post-408-0-57121500-1508527229_thumb.jpg

Cut down and a quick dusting of primer

post-408-0-70389700-1508527230_thumb.jpg

And pretty much ready for the equipment to be fitted. Ihave also cut back the roof ribs away from the well as per prototype

post-408-0-58402000-1508527231_thumb.jpg

In the meantime:

975814 requires a few windows to be blanked - done in the same way with shaving off the frame, "squaring the corners" and fitting a blank

post-408-0-21146500-1508527808_thumb.jpg

post-408-0-80865100-1508527809_thumb.jpg

Primer highlights the blemishes. They are scraped to give a key to a bit more filler

post-408-0-57084900-1508527812_thumb.jpg

post-408-0-09781000-1508527813_thumb.jpg

And a final sand down, with primer to check

post-408-0-59228300-1508527813_thumb.jpg

975814/975985/977984 do not carry the large square chambers - two of them are fitted with the oval shaped Roevac vents (more of those later)

The slot in the ribs is for another vent

post-408-0-62302300-1508527810_thumb.jpg

Made from styrene

post-408-0-59958400-1508527811_thumb.jpg

975814 also appears to be the only NMT coach to be fitted with vertical handrails on the ends.

I was considering replacing all the small handrails on the roof panels, but I experimented with one and once painted black/dark grey, the effect is negligible IMO

There are quite a few aerials and other bits on the various roofs - they will be added later

Cheers,

Mick

The two generator coaches 975984 and 977984 have been started.

They are both similar in appearance with blanked windows and grilles, but reference to photos is essential to make sure the correct windows are altered.

The combined frame and blank is fitted

post-408-0-74391900-1510183938_thumb.jpg

Reinforced behind with epoxy resin

post-408-0-66273300-1510183971_thumb.jpg

Although PHD have tried to make things a bit easier by combining the frame with the blank, it means that the blank section is extremely thin and prone to flexing, hence the epoxy to keep it in place.

I think a better approach would have been similar to the 950 conversion with full thickness etched blanks and separate frames.

Filler around the edges

post-408-0-72200100-1510183964_thumb.jpg

Although it looks pretty decent

post-408-0-38480600-1510183981_thumb.jpg

From another angle, it doesn't look so good.

post-408-0-57663500-1510183991_thumb.jpg

Unless the blank is dead level with the body or recessed back by the tiniest amount, it means that the brass has to be filed down to be level with the surrounding body.

More filing/sanding/filling.

post-408-0-81887000-1510184003_thumb.jpg

Nearly there, but still needs more work.

post-408-0-77859200-1510184014_thumb.jpg

The final two frames have been attached

post-408-0-22497000-1510184024_thumb.jpg

Patience is the key and you'll need plenty of it......

Cheers,

Mick

I'm in the middle of 977986 and tedious is one word for it... Ive done one side completely smooth and am putting off the other side by doing the underframe, roof, pickups and coupling before I can be bothered doing the other side

TBH, I'd rather do 977986(or 99666) using styrene blanks in preference to the NMT..............

Out of interest, what would stop you using plasticard right up to the etched frames on the NMT?

Here are my efforts. Don't think I'm quite ready for an NMT.

attachicon.gifIMG_3170.JPG

The PHD NMT etches are half-etched one side for the blank and half etch step for the frame. It would be quite difficult to remove the half etch panel from the blank without damaging the frame half.

Visible in this pic

post-408-0-79031900-1510246097_thumb.jpg

I'm persevering with them because I don't have many windows to do.

Cheers,

Mick
