Newbryford's mostly Yellow workbench - "it's a drag, man......."

Ha, i was joking about what flf meant as I didn't know either!!

The DBSO kit is nice and simple I knocked it up in a couple of hours (minus painting) as I don't finish mine to a 'newbryford' standard, I've not looked at the sprinter kit but that looks far more involved

Regards the DBSO kit you can choose either a genny or non genny fitted version, the fiddiliest part of the kit is the grille so if you want to keep it simple go for the standard one

Another good thing with the DBSO kit is it comes with a cutting template (actually the biggest part of the kit!) once you have that you can reuse it to make futher DBSOs if you 'improvise' window frames from plasticard or the like, that's what I'm going to do anyway (sorry Pete!)

Thanks chaps. Sorry to hijack your thread with questions, but I see both of you (Mick and Jim) have built the RTOV- presumably both using the PHD kit?

Any opinion on which is easier out of the Sprinter and RTOV (or DBSO in my era...)? I might as well order the bits I think I will want from PHD in one go. I must say that I like the look of his etched steps, but I have heard these can be a little difficult (not quite the words I heard)- but well worth it from the look of them.

Again, thanks for the info and sorry for all the questions. I really did not appreciate how interesting departmental stuff can be.

Hi Derek, I have done the RTOV (or DBSO in old money) and it was a very easy conversion to do. Sold my primed one on eBay to clear some room. Currently doing the 950 in N which is also a great wee kit but obviously more involved as there are two vehicles.

Cheers

Eddie

My RTOV/DBSO are not kits - they are cut n shut with the doors and windows as required. One donor Airfix BSO can provide parts for three DBSO/RTOV's. There are kits from Hurst (again not easy to find) and Silver Fox did a resin version, but I think that has been taken on by Britannia Pacific Models.

Cheers,

Mick

Thanks again chaps.

I will let you know how I get on with this. I might even start my own thread "Derek's mostly blue and grey but with a red stripe workbench"

Crack on! Have a look for stuff by Big Bob - search for Oversett and 86902

Mick

Hi Mick,

Cracking stuff as always. Any plans for 37884 with its EMU adaptor coupling?

Cheers

Simon

Hi Simon,

I'm looking at doing 37884 (just need to sort a suitable pair of noses), but I'll only fit a dummy dropped coupling as I'll probably run it with the T2 set.

Cheers,

Mick

Hi Mick,

If its any help, I used an old Dellner from a 57 for my 884, which i glued on to the bottom of a screw link - see pic. I also created the m/w socket from bits of plasticard, and the LED taillights from replica.

Keep up the great work.

Cheers,

Andi.

Hi Andi,

Where did you get the dellner from?

Steve

As per his post - from a 57. He's probably painted one into WCRC livery and removed it from there. (That's what I would do)

Cheers,

Mick

Now back to some yellow stuff after a foray into Freightliner HIAs.

TIC2 977974 and RSC1 977868. Both converted from Lima 2Fs. A few bits of bogie detail and they're ready to go.

The camera makes the rear coach look a different scale!

This will become yellow - 73138. A Dapol 73 purchased via a well known auction site.

Immediately from the workbench - warts an all cruel close ups.

The additions are styrene scraps. The lamp irons on the end with the camera hae bn moved slightly inboard. The extra lights are square styrene cut down and drilled through. I have a couple of red/white bicolour "lighthouse" LEDs to fit.

A bit of tdying up and a quick dash of primer.

Still a bit of work to do.

Looking good Mick !

Isn't the ED easy to work on, it just drops to pieces for you. :)

Cheers,

Phil.

Apart from trying to remove the last vestiges of paint from the cab air pipes and MU connectors.

I don't look at the intranet that often and I am wary about quoting from it until I see it somewhere else and know it's in the public domain.

Usually a bit late then, like this time.

Hi Mick

A question if I may - what shade grey do your use for the roofs on your Network Rail test stock?

I've used BR Exec Dark Grey from Phoenix and starting to think it looks too dark.

post-17057-0-61585900-1460966049_thumb.jpg

(My first attempts at 999602 - UTU3, 6262 and 9703).

Many thanks

Just like yellow, there are various shades....

I often use coach stock roof grey, as per maroon coaches, I've also used BR Freight stock grey, pre and post 1964 versions.

977995 - the stand-in NMT spare coach has (or at least did have) a rail grey roof that made it stand out from the others.

I think one or two of the generator vans had very dark grey, almost black roofs at one time.

Not a definitive answer I know.

Cheers,

Mick

Dapol HIAs....

Warning - photo heavy.

For those of you following elsewhere, here's my take on them.

Door lock cylinders removed on one side.

A couple of them portray the later build "two rib" version - removed by cutting/filing. (1st and 4th green wagons below)

Interiors weathered by stripping them down.

Lower hopper sections repainted in body colour.

Buffer shanks painted black.

End doors painted silver.

Then weathering with various shades of brake dust, frame dirt and light grey for load discolouration.

Some of them have the hopper door handles touched in with yellow, as well as axleboxes. White paint on the T-shaped load indicators above the axleboxes.

Then attack with graffiti

Various stages in layering the graffiti

Although they've already had a coat of weathering, the pics don't show it up too well.

A bit more work to do to tone them down a touch more, also wheels to paint. There's another 10 in un-graffitied form. The rake should be making it's revenue earning run on New Bryford tomorrow at the Bradford MRC/Cleckheaton show.

Cheers,

Mick
