Looking forward to this one Mick, particularly how you deal with the BSO. I've got a set of coaches with an eye on this set.

Hi Andi,

RSC3 stuff soon.

Here's a quick shot of the barrier vehicles on their first service on Blackmill. Sandwiching a set of HST trailers.

Here goes with RSC3.

Radio Survey coach 3 - 977997 is usually accompanied by Mk2's 5981, 9481 and 1256.

9481 starts life as a "normal" Airfix BSO.

The coach is stripped of windows, chassis and paint.

9481 requires the blanking out of the toilet window and the first full saloon window making into a 1/2 size.

Rather than trying to fill in and match up window frames, I cut out two windows from a spare BSO that had previously donated body parts to a DBSO/RTOV conversion (it will again provide parts for another RTOV). Matching holes were cut into the side of 9481 and the new windows inserted and the bodywork filled in.

BSO's can usually be picked up fairly easily/cheaply and one coach can provide parts for two DBSO/RTOV conversions and 9481 above.

This is not me being a full time modeller - I'm describing projects that have been done in the last 2-3 years or so. I'm hoping that this thread will encourage me to finish off a few "nearly done" items on my long "to-do" list.

Although, every now and then, there's something that jumps the queue, such as 6392/6397 above.

RSC3 was mostly completed last year, but will finally be finished in the next few weeks.

Cheers,

Mick

Hi

Thanks for those.

However, they are not the two I've done - 6392 and 6397 - which are ex BG's.

6379 is ex-1039 / 975972 http://www.departmen...6379&btn=search

6378 is ex-1054 / 975971 http://www.departmen...6378&btn=search

If you look closely at the pics, you'll notice that they have double doors - which have been added since they were converted to translator vehicles http://www.departmentals.com/photo/975972a

They may form the basis of a future project though......

Mick

More on RSC3 soon.

In the meantime, I've been playing around with very small paintbrushes and a steady hand. (I've left this in the original painting/weathering section)

Continuing with RSC3.

With a bit of filling, filing and a layer of primer and 9481 looks like this.

post-408-0-76834300-1338241125.jpg

This highlights that a bit more filler is required before a top coat of yellow.

post-408-0-89903000-1338241814.jpg

post-408-0-87651200-1338241826.jpg

1256 is a RFB, base model is a Airfix (Dapol/Hornby) Mk2f FO with three windows blanked out with plasticard.

post-408-0-94075800-1338241239.jpg

This undergoes a similar fill/file/prime to highlight any extra work required. Including correction of an errant handrail hole!

977997 still retains the window frames around the blanked out sections.

These have been done using 15thou plasticard, first of all, cutting a slightly oversize rectangle and then gradually filing the edges and corners until it fits.

post-408-0-39290000-1338587001.jpg

One blank is fitted with a grille. The window is filled in and once set, a hole is cut out for the grille.

post-408-0-24162100-1338587015.jpg

Then Evergreen profiled section is added to represent the grille.

Whilst looking for good images showing the porterbrook logo on 6397, I realised that 6397 doesn't have the lower edge strips - so those that have acquired the etches - don't fit them to 6397 if that's one that you do!

The other missing link is I'm not certain if the inner end gangway - that couples to the HST coaches - is modified or partially removed. http://www.departmen...om/photo/6397-1 looks like it has been shortened and plated - can anyone provide any better images? Thanks,Mick

I work at Etches Park Depot and certainly all EMT HST barriers we work with have just standard gangway ends with drop-head buckeye and standard air pipes. But we are cheap and have no need to change them so don't bother. I think the only reason they are changed is when they are heavily refurbished/coupler mods are made and instead of removing and refitting ganways (like we do with all our 15x units) they are removed and plated over as obsolete. The gangway doors don't open and there certainly aren't any lights inside but I'm sure that if the doors were plated over it would be clearly visable from most pics, when the buckeye is used collars are taken off the buffers and they retract to make the corridor connection/rubbing plate the new buffer, this makes the gap between stock much smaller (if you didnt know). I've never noticed HST barriers having non identical ends, normally like I say the inner ends are converted to BSI/Delner/other auto coupler and the gangway taken away or both removed but someone may prove me wrong? 6392/97/99 are all EMT and as far as i'm aware identical except 6399 at Etches Park which has wasp stripes, I can try and get some pics if you want?

Looks more like COLAS to me ;).

Mike

10/10 Mike!

surely if it was colas only half would be yellow? then again ive never done it! should look good though jsut like the rest of your work! keep it up well done :D

thanks

dan

Hi Dan, Thanks for that. The pale yellow is an ideal undercoat for the orange and also the warning yellow ends.

post-408-0-70603800-1341162899_thumb.jpg

I originally acquired the later "Colas Rail Freight" transfers before Bachy announced their Colas 66 (later liveried 66846). I was looking around for a suitable donor loco - 66405/407 for example, but when the Freightliner sound fitted locos were reduced in price, it was too good an opportunity to miss. Rather than waiting around for 66846 (due late 2012) - which I would probably renumber anyway - I've cracked on with a repaint into yellow and orange.

The Colas 66/8's are regulars my way on the Carlisle-Chirk log trains, but there are odd L/E moves, such as 66848 that made two runs by my house last Thursday!

This may also prove to be the incentive to try and move on another "wishlist" project of mine - KFA conversions from ferrywagons...............

Cheers,

Mick

Looks good Mick. When I saw the first photo I was thinking how good a NR CL66 would look!

Cheers

Martin

Maybe, one of our livery photoshoppers will oblige.......

I though masking it up for the black would be a quick job....

The diagonal line was laid in with 2mm wide masking tape

post-408-0-28579000-1341352528_thumb.jpg

But before it was fixed properly, I marked where it crossed the door handle and grille insets and placed a small dab of Humbrol Maskol to minimise the paint bleed into the channels - the tape was then refixed into place and gently eased into the bodyside ribbing with gentle pressure from a finger nail.

post-408-0-88531800-1341352549_thumb.jpg

Using a sharp (i.e. new) scalpel blade, I made vertical cuts and removed the masking tape across the grilles. Then masking around the grilles with more tape. The 1mm tape is "backed up" with 6mm wide tape and then the larger areas covered with 25mm tape.

post-408-0-60789500-1341352753_thumb.jpg

Here's the final result - there were some small areas to be touched up, including across the diagonal line. I used the same new blade to scrape off the excess black on a couple of ribs and then touch in with orange and yellow. It's also had a coat of Klear to provide a suitable base for the transfers - the first of which have been applied.

Cheers,

Mick

p.s. - RSC3 had a full test on Blackmill earlier this evening, so finishing work, such as the Laserglaze will be fitted soon (pics of it in yellow very soon)

66848 nears completion. Awaiting refitting of windows, silencer, handrails and roof grille.
