Ron Heggs
The suspension hangers fitted to one side, and the remaining hangers waiting to be installed - All the suspension hangers fitted - - and the long awaited test It is unfortunate that the spacing of the cans could not be made closer, so that only 9 can be accommodated under the deck, and that only 6 cans can be fitted on the top of the arches The test load only amounted to 15 x 500ml = 7.5kg (16.5 lbs) No deflection or distortion was detected
MattWallace
Best beer can storage I've ever seen - when are you going to fit the coolant system to keep them cold though? Seriously, amazing modelling, I'll be watching to see how it progresses.
RMweb Premium Siberian Snooper Posted January 4, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 4, 2013 Hi Ron It's good to see that the bridge has now been properly load tested. A magnificent feat of plastic civil engineering. I would have added some smiley's but these are greyed out at the moment. Cheers SS

Shadow
Ron, I think that the thanks should on you for building such an inspiring model, and showing how easy it is to build such an exceptional complex model when it's broken down into small parts. In your case, very small parts but when added with a huge amount of patience/perseverance the result is ....... well, no words to describe it that haven't already been said. Thank you Dave
Ron Heggs
Hi, Dave I thank you for your much appreciated comments Being a first time modeller, my main reason for being on this forum is to obtain critical comment on my efforts, hoping to learn from modellers who are far more experienced than me, and also enjoy a little banter with fellow modellers which is not available to me here in Spain Ron
RMweb Gold Kenokie Posted January 5, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 5, 2013 Wot ....................................... my view of the world just slipped at bit Ron Heggs = first time modeller... Oh no, it’s ok ...perspective is coming back Isambard Kingdom Brunel = part time builder! George Stephenson got lucky with a bit of boiled water! The Forth Rail Bridge was knocked up from a couple of bits of steel and a welding kit! Yep, it’s ok now ...everything is back on a even keel Ron, it might be true but that has to be the understatement of the last few years .. please keep up the brilliant work and what can your public look forward to next? Ron Heggs
Thanks Chris One has to start modelling sometime, even if it is late in life - 70 next month .... and what can your public look forward to next? The bridge has to have the handrails fitted, then painted in grey primer, and the abutments completed Trackwork and ballasting will wait for the bridge's placement in the Summerhouse, hopefully sometime within the next two years when the MCS layout is extended through the garden In the meantime it will be back to building the MCS layout, and looking for more challenges which can be incorporated somewhere on the layout
Ron Heggs
The handrail supports are made from 20thou x 60thou x 15mm high styrene strip at 15.3mm spacings. The supports have 4 - 25thou dia holes drilled at 3mm/4mm/5mm centres, with handrails of 20thou strip - - 10 supports fixed, another 96 to go
RMweb Premium Siberian Snooper Posted January 9, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 9, 2013 Hi Ron It strikes me that you really must be some sort of masochist, drilling all those holes to that level of accuracy, even using a jig and batch drilling several supports at a time. Cheers SS
RMweb Gold Kenokie Posted January 10, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 10, 2013 Ron How do you do the drilling to ensure consistancy? Chris

Cheers SS Just one support at a time, using a pin vice, after marking out batches of 10, and centre popping with a pin Tried a jig and batch drilling, but any slight off vertical drilling renders all but the top one unusable It's no more a task than cutting hundreds of strips of styrene Ron

Ron Heggs
Half of one side of the deck handrailing is fitted - - a little straightening of the posts is required
Ron Heggs
- and the second half of the handrails on this side of the bridge deck - posts not as bent as last time - slight miscount of posts (will add these to the posts required for the other side) - handrail section in place - still a few bent posts
