Southern Region photos 1980s.

While we're on open days, there was a Network South East event at Cannon Street in 1986, with two shuttles from London Bridge, one the 4-SUB+2-BIL and one a 455:

Hi All.

It's 'Spot the Station Time'.

For a little light entertainment, and, of course, an excuse to post a few 80's/90's, and later pics. of some units' front ends, here's the question.....

Can any one identify the stations featured in the photos ?.

Eeasy eenuff, for you Southern Buffs, but, how 'bout those North of the River ?. 'Ere we go !!.

Just a bit of fun.smile.gif

It's always good to see pics from the old thread Peter.

Thanks for the Christmas card (2nd. pic down). I don't think I've seen that one before.

I've got a few odds and sods left, not any interesting ones though. I'll have a rummage.

Cheers and bye fer now.

Hi All.

It appears that there is a lack of (reluctant ?) uptake on the station identity parade. See previous post, 27/11/09.

A clue, is that the pics depict locations on the ex-Western Section of BR Southern Region.

At present, served by it's descendent, South West Trains Ltd.

Failing any other input, it looks like it's only you, P.C.M., and myself, and I'm the one with the answers.wink.gif

Any guesses / comments / pics etc, are very welcome. Just trying to keep this thread going.

I'll keep you posted, later.

Regards, Frank.

Well done and well spotted Temeraire...... congratulations.... 9/10icon_clap.gif

And the courageous, valiant runner up is.....P.C.M. with... 5/10 icon_thumbsup2.gif

Sorry if it appeared confusing, i.e. trick questions.

There were 7 different locations, 3 pics at one, and 2 at another. Only because I didn't have enough photos for ten different stations. mellow.gif .

Here's the run-down :-

1. Waterloo, Platform 1.

2. Southampton, Platform 2.

3. Brockenhurst, Platform 1.

4. Waterloo, Platform 15. 'L.S.W.R 150'. The office building alongside was demolished to make way for the Eurostar terminal.

5. Lymington Pier.

6. Woking, Platform 6. 'Woking 150'.

7. Southampton, Platform 4.

8. Bournemouth stabling point, opposite the Signal Box.

9. Waterloo, Platform 3.

10. Poole..

Hope this made sense, as I've just had my RH. eye cataract done, and everything's a bit hazy.

Thanks for taking an interest and for taking part, Ian and Peter.

All the best. Frank.

So no. 7 was Southampton as well, thought it must be closer to London with the Connex(?) livery on that unit! Clapham was just a guess.

Apologies for that, Peter and Ian. I thought I'd add a bit of confusion. I do it to myself all the time unsure.gif .

Yep, Connex used to run a coastway service from Bournemouth (Bay platform 1, I think), more often than not, with a 4-Vep, to Brighton and/or Gatwick. It didn't last very long though.

Regards.

Was this service not established in the NSE era once the Solent Link electrification had been completed?

The SRA or whoever it was at the time cut back the Connex South Central service to Southampton Central which is where the current Southern service terminates, it was never very popular between Bournemouth and Southampton anyway and people avoided Connex.

Plastic pigs ?. That was the polite name.

Also known amongst their close fraternity as the 'Vomit Comets', after the introduction of the Stagecoach liveries.

Hope I haven't given too much away ?.

How many had the pre-TOPS number over the cab like that?

Not many, I can think of 10 and 46 OTTOMH in large logo and I think a couple of the NSE liveried ones did as well.

Peter - What a fantastic modellable train in that pic with the 60 above, very cool B)

Thanks Pugsley, thats the only 60 I have a pic of on an engineers train, though I do remember riding as the shunter to EH depot and back to EH yard in a class 60 with a short train of engineers wagons for repair. We bought out a mixed bag of ballast wagons and I think some warflats. I was a bit worried we would come off the track up the yard as we went to drop the wagons off in the PAD which had some real dodgy trackwork. icon_surprised.gif Plus the driver was having fun driving the then fairly new loco, and we may have been going a bit fast.icon_e_biggrin.gif

Anyway, I must have missed that post about the numbers in the headcode box on class 50s. I could only find the two you mentioned.

Cheers Peter,

A handful of 80's shots of the few depots I'm familiar with. Possibly, they should go into the infrastructure forums, but as they've got some BR(S) EMUnits in the background, I think they could be more useful here.

A parting shot of Brighton, after the open day there. What looks to be the steep pedestrian/workers access to the Preston Park Pullman works, is just visible behind the cabin on the lower right. I could be wrong though.

A peek around the corner at West Worthing, a 3 road shed, which the SEGroup were hoping to aquire for their HQ / Museum, but to no avail. It has now been demolished.

I thought I had a better pic, taken from the down side, but it seems to have gone MIA.

Bournemouth (Branksome). The carriage washing plant has been moved along side from the headshunt on the right, which used to loop down to B'm'th West station.

Typical of many other carriage / emu sheds dotted about the Southern. Clapham Junc'n., Ramsgate, Farnham, Littlehampton, to name but a few. Another standard S.R. design.

At least someone's having a go at preserving the 'Past'.

Above the embankment is one of the ARP Shelters provided for the station's staff and passengers during WW2. Behind this, and to the right of the taller building, was, once, the 'British Railways Staff Association Club'.

Across the Holdenhurst Road, facing the 'phone boxes, the facade of the Bournemouth Central Goods Depot's offices, can also be seen.
