WESTERN LIVERIES D1030 - D1073, July 1962 - February 1977

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A little later than planned but here goes with part two, covering the forty four locos built at Crewe Works between July 1962 and April 1964. As the entire Western build programme progressed at both Swindon and Crewe Works, it was found that delays in the delivery of certain components slowed things down somewhat, especially at Swindon, where incomplete locos were taking up vital space on the shop floor, hence the decision to transfer the construction of D1030 - D1034 to Crewe. This decision appears to have been taken quite late in the day, since the highest numbered loco D1073 (which on paper should have been the last one to be built) was released to traffic on 3rd December 1963, with D1030 following two days later on the 5th and the final loco D1034 not being delivered until 15th April 1964.

Reference to the 'General Notes' in Part One is recommended regarding certain livery variations, but compared to the Swindon built locos the Crewe batch had fewer variations to start with so the list is much easier going, over half only wore two liveries throughout their rather short lives, fifteen wore three liveries with just three carrying four liveries. I hope that makes sense!

To recap and (hopefully!) keep things simple, all Crewe built maroon locos had grey / off white window pillars, all of the locos delivered in MSYP from new had black bufferbeams, black buffer stocks, black roofs and black nameplates. In some period photos of new or nearly new locos these black roofs often look dark grey, but the paint spec quoted by the BTC was 'Black to BSS 2660-9-103'. Like their Swindon built counterparts, all of the BSYP locos had blue window pillars and all of the GSYP locos had green window pillars. All BSYP locos had blue roof hatches and all GSYP locos had mid-grey roof hatches. All of the Crewe built GSYP locos had red backed 'plates and red bufferbeams, with the red extending to all of the bevelled edges but not the raised lip surrounding them. The bufferbeams and 'plates were all repainted black when the next livery variation was applied, whether it was maroon or blue. All of the BSYP locos apart from D1030 had black bufferbeams and standard sized BR arrow logos. The early yellow bufferbeam variations on maroon liveried D1039 - D1043 were covered in the General Notes in Part One but are worth repeating individually below for easier reference, and as with their Swindon counterparts, these bufferbeams were subsequently painted black when small yellow panels were applied. From new, the entire Crewe batch had headboard clips on the cab fronts and train crew name tag holders beneath the cab side windows. Some headboard clips were later lost on certain locos due to collision damage.

1. MSYP : 3/12/63 - 5/1/68

2. BFYE : 5/1/68 - 29/8/74 (WD)

A final note regarding those experimental windscreen wipers - as stated in Part One, most of the equipment was removed fairly swiftly but the mounting bars and in some cases the water jets / pumps were left in situ until each loco was withdrawn, if anyone wants to model these locos accurately it's well worth seeking out decent photographs to work from as they were not all identical. Some stood out more than others, for example, the large water pump housing on D1055 was quite prominent, making it easy to identify in photos.

Hope all of the above doesn't seem too complicated, if in doubt just ask.... and roll on the Dapol Western ;) !

was it D1045 who had a windscrean wiper at bottom on drivers side? owen.

great list by the way.

Good point Owen and thanks... I missed that one somehow when typing up, it's scribbled down in the rough draft somewhere though!

Just checked... it was mounted at the bottom of the secondman's side and fitted in September '66. Not sure how long it lasted in service though. More checking to do there methinks.

Edit : ta Mods / Andy for pinning it ;)

How does your key work, msye - maroon..... Yellow ends?

Hi,

MSYE = maroon with small / half yellow panels

MFYE = maroon with full yellow ends

;)

Just one point Nidge re liveries.

Adrian Curtis has published a photo of D1044 MNYP at Ranelagh bridge, so this was livery on delivery from Crewe.

Sorry don't have date to MSYP.

Neil

Thanks Neil, not sure how I missed adding that one as it's one of my favourite photos in Adrian's book!

Landore received the first dual-braked conversions, beginning with D1066 in July 1968 - D1013/15/25/26/31/55/61/62/63/69 followed (these mainly stuck to the Paddington - Swansea route and were therefore rarely seen in the South West in the late 1960s). By 1969 these would still have been in good external condition but as we all know it took very little time for loco roofs to go black, so I think the cleaners had their own reasons for cleaning the bodywork sections between the exhaust-encrusted roof panels but leaving the panels themselves alone. They look matt black in the photos and I can't imagine for a moment that it would have been worthwhile giving them a thorough cleaning in preparation for repainting black, a colour they'd revert to soon enough anyway! Looks like exhaust soot to me.

There's a photograph of D1062 Western Courier in Maroon with yellow buffer beam, no location is given. But as it's preserved on the SVR, I suspect that it's a livery applied in preservation? There isn't as far as I can tell any record of the this livery having been applied to this loco during BR service. Is it photo'd somewhere near the rear of Kidderminster SVR Diesel depot? But there's that Guy in a BR uniform pointing...............................

Yes, definitely a preservation livery - the clue is the train air brake pipe on the bufferbeam (the white one) - n/a on all liveries except blue full yellow in BR days.

Don't know the location though.

She ran with a yellow panel one end and yellow buffer beam the other for a while on the SVR. She was in the condition when I drove her, ands what a great day that was.

The yellow buffer beam end was pointing south at the time.

There's me in the drivers seat. I'm at the north facing yellow panel end.

That's taken at the north end of Bridgnorth, just past the level crossing gates where the locos run round 😉
