I'm not sure what it is!  It's a Vanguard model - Escort Mark 2 it says underneath.  Here's couple of close up pics of it - lying on the embankment only to allow me to get a decent pic of it.  Not meant as a comment on Escort drivers!!

Very nice and I do believe as Jeff P stated it looks like a Ford Escort Harrier. The car SLG618V itself according to DVLA is currently Sorn and has been since 2017....

Nice motor, I've been picking up a few odds and sods for our layout, where did you source the number plates?

I didn't source the number plates separately, that's how the model came out of the box.

Unfortunately, I can't remember where I got it from: I suspect it was Hattons but I really can't be sure.

Certainly, underneath the model the chassis is stamped "Vanguards".  A quick look on ebay brought up nothing other than the fact that "Vanguards" are now "Corgi Vanguards".   However, I couldn't find a Mark 2 Escort.

Sorry I can't be more help, D6775.

This is a photo of the actual layout in 1976, Barnaby.   It's the one I've used as a reference for the model - minus the 3rd rail, of course!!!  It's from the book "Merseyside Electrics".  I think I've put it in the thread before, but probably at the beginning - all 88 pages and 8 years ago!!

I added an extra siding as a headshunt to what was originally going to be a preservation depot, but that got hijacked by the DMU stabling and fuelling point!!

158670226_WestKirbyStation1976-Copy.jpg.41c1776afbe6ff627efaee5bb002c842.jpg

I've also seen photos of a station "down South" somewhere which had a similar layout but with the platform offset to the left of the main lines.  I didn't take copies at the time and now I can't for the life of me find them!!!   Frustrating!!!

HTH.

It's definitely a Harrier.

The MkII came with 1600 ohv (Harrier), 1600 ohc (Mexico), 1800 DOHC (RS1800), and 2000 ohc (RS2000, of the nose cone and Doyle's car in the Professionals).

The RS1800 was the one boy racers wanted, though few got one: 140 bhp standard with a single Weber,  and with the twin Webers, could easily be tuned to near 180bhp, in a basic car that weighed not very much. It was the car Ford won the WRC with.

I have Vanguard models of the MkI and MkII Mexicos, having owned both.

I wish I had either one now.....

glad to hear it Rod,

the prices on eBay are occasionally eye-watering.

Last year, a GW Rivet press (still available new from the manufacturer, list price £75-95 dependent on model) went for north of £140.  I’m not sure if that was a case of a greedy seller who got lucky, or two buyers who didn’t know the value of what they were bidding for.

i hope to find time to watch the videos at some point!

keep well!

And I am impressed with the range of sound effects built into the decoder (which I assume does not include the Station Supervisor - yet)

The Station Supervisor and the driver are actually on the Class 37 sound file!!  Which is why I left it parked in the other platform!!!

It's just a pity they haven't got Scouse accents - that would be more appropriate for a Merseyside layout!!!  (I've found out since who's the voices are!!  But for now, my lips are sealed!!)

The 08 sound file also has voices on it - I'll see if I can work them into the next video.. Yes, there will be another: my son and grandson liked the cab ride video so much they've asked for a Class 37 one.  So I'll do one.  I've got a sequence in my head already - involving a demic DMU!!!

More soon.

Hi Rod,

Just to make it more complicated, now you have the hang of it, what would be really spectacular would be cab ride view, interspersed with 'drive by' views at strategic points.

To avoid getting the camera in the drive by shots, they will need to be filmed separately and spliced in.

(Tomorrow, I'll be asking for the world on a stick, LOL).

Best regards,

Paul

Funny you should suggest that, Paul, as the thought had crossed my mind!  There could possibly be 2 locos running at the same time in the scenario I'm thinking of so I was thinking of 2 cab views or a lineside shot.     Mmmmm ..... more food for thought!!

Rod

PS  That's going to mean a script, then splitting into scenes - with continuity challenges, etc.    Sounds a good project for continuing lockdown - as I have to shield!!

I think at those prices I will pass, I've picked up 5 suitable vehicles for that but all need reg plates, they will get sorted.

Hi Jon.

It's only the platform 2  LED that's not working, platform 1 is OK.  It used to be a bit temperamental then it stopped working altogether: I suspect a joint has come unsoldered.

It's ballasted in so taking it out to repair could be a bit of a b***-ache!!   But, as I'm likely to be having to shield for a few more weeks yet, I might just get round to fixing it.  Any advice?

Rod

PS  Thanks for the comment about the video.

Advice? work carefully around the LED! Check your switch first! If you can expose the connections on the back of the LEDs, with a meter,  check continuity back down to the resistors and also the earthing to the structure. If all  else fails, I'll check it next time I come up to Freckleton...whenever that will be!

Hi all.

You would think that, with this lockdown/shielding situation, you'd be saving money, wouldn't you?  No diesel to buy as the car's going nowhere, no gym fees, no drinks in the pub, refunds on theatre tickets, etc.  Not if you're a railway modeller!!

What I've saved has now been balanced out by an increase in the preservation society's rolling stock and motive power!!  I've talked about this in the past as a possibility - but now it's a reality!!  A 14xx tank and 2 x autocoaches!!  and here they are:

1722793414_IMG_20200514_191829-Copy.jpg.8e97e776c9a11c67550d334ec614126a.jpg2097339654_IMG_20200514_191814-Copy.jpg.045b9e52b0cac95ea0c1872be6753fa3.jpg1562620684_IMG_20200514_191748-Copy.jpg.2b30d76381ccc5d5de8799c29f12b5da.jpg

All Dapol models and all weathered and chip, etc fitted to the loco by Jintyman.  And what a superb job he's done!!  The  blood and custard one is portrayed as needing repainting, (it passes its fitness-to-run exams, though!) whereas the choc and cream one has already been repainted and just shows the effects of usage - as does the loco.

I was concerned about a couple of things with the whole consist, though [I don't like that word "consist" but can't think of a better (or British) one - any suggestions?]   1)  Getting at the water column in the "one in front, one behind" set-up which I prefer and 2) bufferlocking if I had to run the 2 coaches together behind the loco.

So;ution to 2) first: the coaches have large oval buffers and go through the reverse curves with no problem at all - pushed or pulled.  1) But I then had an idea - use the headshunt to the DMU stabling point to get at the column.  And that works!!  It's tight and needs very careful driving but it can be done with an autocoach in front of the loco.  These 2 pics show how close it is:

IMG_20200514_193315_-_Copy.jpg.8ed79fe2d69226c892bfc02d42728a0b.jpg1736904495_IMG_20200514_193329-Copy.jpg.b1342896af6e34ffee63976a40d57edc.jpg

I doubt the journey is 15 miles but I assume these small tank engines would need filling fairly often, wouldn't they?  Can any steam buff enlighten me, please?

So, I am a very happy bunny!1  Now I've got to work out what comes off the layout and into storage when it's a weekend or Bank Holiday** - probably the parcels stock would come off (and no, Craig, I'm keeping the 115!!!)   As the town is a seaside town, I'll need  the loco-hauled passenger stock for excursions so a couple of DMUs will probably stay in the stabling point all day.  I'll try it, though and see how it works out.

I hope to get a video or two of the new stock done tomorrow, so watch this space!!

More soon.

Rod

By the era of your layout, TOPS was an everyday part of railway ops, so consist is appropriate.

But you could simply use the word “train”, or possibly “formation”.

When Vanguards first came out I was spending £11.95 on a car. The Corgi bought them several years later and prices started to rocket on vehicles for which the tooling would have been fully depreciated. Same cars are now running out around £30 which I consider profiteering. When I complained to Corgi about it the silence was deafening as naturally they chose not to reply.

Oxford larger cars are priced around £23/£24 which is much more reasonable although if they can get the Austin 7 out considerably cheaper then I am sure Corgi could do the same.

Rant Over!

Hi all.

There's been progress in the garden and with the outside bit of the layout.

Following the storms earlier this year, the fence behind the layout suffered a bit  (to put it mildly!!) - pic here:

IMG_20200209_171021.jpg.f61a39661d7448bdf6a09c81933da2ad.jpg

And there was another storm to come after this pic!!  My neighbour and I got some quotes but the lockdown put paid to any replacement.  Anyway, the fencer's supplier has opened up, so we've now got a new fence.  See the contrast!!

IMG_20200528_142559.jpg.fa6f8613cebe2a4851118aeb31e85dd2.jpg

It also spurred me on to finish the refelting of the top of the outside bit, so I've done that now.  This was where the refelting was up to - I thought it was recent but this pic was taken in January 2018!!  (and the fence panel looks pretty solid, too).

978853762_P1050868-Copy.JPG.f5b6c18f87f23bdb6cc40f6b225fad3a.JPG

And here's the completed job:

I'm very happy with that - hopefully it'll do me a few more winters!

I've done another video (!!!) - this time of the 14xx and autocoaches.  I'm just in the process of editing it and then I'll put it on YouTube - probably tomorrow.  Watch this space!!
