Coach bogie Posted April 10, 2012 Share Posted April 10, 2012 I would like to submit my latest project to the challenge. I ssume it will meet with the criteria. I have been building the Albion Kits for the various GWR ex MSJWR locomotives. One class that has not been represented in kit form is the small class of 0-6-0 goods locomotives, that Swindon heavily rebuilt. A quick look and it appears to be a Collett 2251, but there are major differences and the class is much smaller and predate the 2251 by many years. Construction has been using brass, mainly scrap from coach kits. Running plate, cab, splashers etc all cut from brass. Frames are ex perseverance 94XX, shortened at both ends with one axle hole repositioned to suit the correct wheelbase. Rods from same source. Romford wheels, Comet/Mashima 38:1 two stage power plant. Boiler is an old Wills 2251, much modified. I found it is a junk box full of holes and cracks. It would have been easier to roll a new brass one but I wanted the weight as my locos have a 1 in 40 incline to tackle. The tender is a much rebuilt Nucast from my 1331 attached on a temporary basis unitl i finish building the strange short tender they ran with. Tender body is virtually complete, again from 'leftover' brass. Tender frames have been cut to lenth and need shaping and drilling for bearings. I hope to have the tender finished in the next couple of weeks. If there are too many commercial parts hopefully the moderator will move it to the modelling or kit building section. I have also recently completed 102 La France from Wills parts. This one probably does use too much of the original though, as a much smaller locomotive, it has very little in common with the original Wills 103/4 kit. Hopefully it will all be finished this weekend. It has been a while since I worked on the MSJ as I have been side tracked rescuing a K's Fowler for a friend. I thought would be a quick job but it actually involved reducing back to a kit and starting again. How do I get talked into these things? Coach bogie Posted May 19, 2012 Author Share Posted May 19, 2012 All finished at last. It looks much better with the larger tender in my opinion. At first it's hauling power was mediocre. I filled the boiler with lead and it now hauls 25 wagons up a 1 in 40 (which is more than the prototype would). I am really pleased with the results. I will go back to coaches for a while as there are three half finished on the bench. If the weather ever warms up, I can paint them outside with the spray cans. Next, I was going to produce a square end framed large prarie 3150 type, but I see PDK have announced a kit, with a second manufacturer considering as well. It will probably be a streamlined King based on a Jamieson kit.I have planned this one for some time, at least with the nickel boiler it can be reformed to the streamline shape.I picked a complete loco/chassis for £8 a couple of years back, so no great loss if I make a mess of it.
