RMweb Gold RThompson Posted April 25, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 25, 2012 I would have said they've mounted a rubber dingy in case the unit needs to float! ... and here's one that mated with Kenny from South Park! (Belgian AM96 EMU) I do wonder what the reason behind the styling is - anyone cast any light on it?

I think the cab front within the rubber hinges out of the way. The Black Hat
Steam: S&DJR / Midland 7F LMS Crab Southern N-15, S15, Schools Diesel: Hymeks Warships Units Slam-door Mk.1 EMUs Transpennine 123 and 124 Class 105 looks pretty bad... pete_mcfarlane
I think the Coey 2-6-0 that Bulleid modified to burn turf is possibly the ugliest thing ever. http://www.douglas-self.com/MUSEUM/LOCOLOCO/francocrosti/francocrosti.htm#turf Painted aluminium as well, which is about the worst livery for a steam loco. D605Eagle
Any of Thompsons pacifics. Hatefull hedious vile monstrosities, and not up to much either. The world was a slightly prettier place when the last one was thankfully scrapped.
RMweb Premium BR60103 Posted April 26, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 26, 2012 I nominate the New York Central's Commodore Vanderbilt (no pic), and the Southern Pacific Daylight, followed by NYC's J3a Hudsons with the parting flash on the bullet nose. http://en.wikipedia....wiki/NYC_Hudson

DavidB-AU
Being used to GE's proper locomotives, I have to agree with the class 70. It looks like a hacked down domestic GE with a malformed garden shed at each end. Utterly wretched things that make the utilitarian ES44AC look positively charming. The Australian-built GEs are somewhat brutish but not unattractive. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pacific_National_liveried_NR16.jpg Cheers David

PLD
If beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder, there must be a severe case of myopia among French Tramway stylists… Exhibit 1: - Marseille Bombardier Flexity Outlook Exhibit 2: - Strasbourg Bombardier EuroTram Exhibit 3: - Paris Alstom Citadis T2 Exhibit 4: - Paris Siemens Avanto S70 Tram-Train And finally the Clincher: - Lyon Alstom Citadis T2/T3 The thing is with each of these, is that they were deliberately styled like that. In all cases there are examples elsewhere of the same vehicle types but with much more conventionally (and atractively) styled ends so Why oh Why! What I liked about it was that the tender was allegedly left in a grubby state so that the lettering on it read: "C.I.E." and "...mental Turf Burning Locomotive"! Guest Natalie Graham
I think the LNWR'S smokebox door wheels are rather neat, except when you have to make them in 2mm scale. Other companies used wheels too, such as the GCR, and I don't think anyone would ever accuse Mr. Robinson's locos of being ugly.
cary hill
Any of the loco's from the long forgotten LNWR with the silly look wheels on the smokebox door. Regards81C I find an awful lot of LNWR designs to be badly proportioned and verging on the ugly. I've just had a long look at some photographs and struggled to see many redeeming factors. Cleefy
I nominate the Class 60. Looks like an old man with his denchers missing or Brains out of Thunderbirds. http://www.flickr.co...@N07/2387753384 As far as diesels go, I'd cheerfully nominate anything from the class 59 upwards, although on reflection I think the sheer blandness of the 67 edges it for me. Horrible things. Electrics, I'm torn between the class 70 and the 71/74. Despite looking like something that's escaped from 1950's Belarus, I don't mind 76s for some reason. Steam, I'd go for the Ivatt 4MT 2-6-0. It looks half-finished to me.

I've just had a long look at some photographs and struggled to see many redeeming factors. Ah, from an obvious Midland man, (judging by location). At least in the main, LNWR locos went quite well, without needing a spare engine on the train. Kevin Martin
