Do you have a copy of Bixley, et al. An Illustrated History of Southern Wagons, Vol 1? It has several photos showing grease boxes with a small circular plate on the outside with SDJR lettering around the top half and, I think, a number or date at the bottom.

I have been working from Bixley et al, and also published pictures of work being done at Midsomer Norton.

on their 6-wheel vehicle. Thank you for the clue about the small circular plate that is clear in plates 161

& 163: however, the build dates seem to be early 1900's

The Marble Arch Brake view, makes the boxes look as though

they have a concave face; and that was what caused my initial

question: if I had the right box for pre-1900 - Victorian engineering

has a habit of putting filigree on anything cast!
