Dazzler Fan
Does anyone have a clear view of the early pattern of axle box used on goods vehicles that they would please post? - that is pre-1900.
buffalo
Do you have a copy of Bixley, et al. An Illustrated History of Southern Wagons, Vol 1? It has several photos showing grease boxes with a small circular plate on the outside with SDJR lettering around the top half and, I think, a number or date at the bottom. Dazzler Fan
Nick: I have been working from Bixley et al, and also published pictures of work being done at Midsomer Norton. on their 6-wheel vehicle. Thank you for the clue about the small circular plate that is clear in plates 161 & 163: however, the build dates seem to be early 1900's Noel
buffalo
Hi Noel, Several of the photos are pre-1900, e.g. the Marble Arch brake in plate 160 and the 8 ton van in plate 156. My impression is that something similar was widely used in 1885-1900. Nick
Dazzler Fan
Nick The Marble Arch Brake view, makes the boxes look as though they have a concave face; and that was what caused my initial question: if I had the right box for pre-1900 - Victorian engineering has a habit of putting filigree on anything cast!
