What he said.   This was treated in exactly that manner and it isn'texcessively glossy.

Hoooooray!!! The truth is finally being spread!

I have lost count of the number of prospective customers who have told me that "I won't use waterslide transfers 'cos I like my models matt / satin, and you can see the carrier-film".

ALL transfers, of any type, should be applied to, and protected with, a gloss finish which, when fully dry, can then be finished to your chosen level of matt / satin / gloss.

I have recently taken to applying waterslide transfers onto, and into, wet Klear lacquer; by doing so, the transfer appears to have been printed directly onto the model.

Fair enough, that is indeed very nice. Just out of interest what was the cream shade?

Ive never been very happy with the coaches I did using a car rattle can (as opposed to specific railway ones) but will revisit them.

I know a professional builder who swears by Halfords especially in 7mm....his stuff is very good...

Vauxhall Gazelle Beige - also sourced via Ebay in a rattle can.  The red is BMW Zinnobar Red.

What do you then overpaint that with, John?   I have found that nothing sticks to Klear, but I have tended to use it as a final coat on carriages or locos and then tried to weather over it.

Let's be clear(!); I am referring to the original Johnson's Klear, bought from Asda some fifteen years ago when it was announced that it was being withdrawn; (I cleared their shelf).

Immediately before applying the transfer, I wet the area where the transfer is to be applied with Klear, then apply the transfer and immediately apply more Klear over it. I adjust the transfer position, and then leave it to dry - ten minutes or so to touch dry.

The next day, I apply the final finish, be it overall Klear for an ex-works finish, or Testor's Dullcote for a matt finish.

I have just finished applying transfers to fifteen BR 'L' containers; each container has ten transfers, and the above method worked an absolute treat!

I've seen a couple of references to a RAL code for a particular car colour.   or Pantone.

RAL does not have a code to match every car paint colour.  The idea of the RAL is to give a standard colour for a use:

An "Army Green", a bright red, a silver, a medium blue, an orange for construction trucks, a green for police cars etc etc

There are an awful lot of RAL colours, so you will get one that is "close".  But it's not guaranteed to match a car colour.

If you want Ford Sierra Beige you need to buy Ford Sierra Beige - either from Halfords if they still stock it, or get it mixed into a can by the local auto paint specialist if it is a "dornmant colour".  Beware - custom can fills are often "2 pack" paint with has a short shelf life when it's moxed - think "Araldite".  Don't be getting a £20 can mixed up for something you only use every 2 years or so.

You can usually specify the paint type - I always specify cellulose.

Back to the matt black, IMHO there's nothing to touch Games Workshop Chaos Black, very fine spray pigment formulated for modelling, and sticks like the proverbial to all surfaces, and has a great finish to take dry brush weathering/powders.

It's even great as an undercoat for darker colours.

Out of interest, for those without a lifetime stock of Johnson's Klear, have you tried it with Pledge Revive It which by all accounts is the same?

No - but most of us have a few spare transfers which we'll never use - perfect for a small trial, for the cost of a bottle of Revive.

Try applying your chosen paint brand to the card first - that way, you'll identify any potential incompatibilities between the paint and the Revive.

chosen paint brand

Phoenix paints for pristine coats, a suitable phoenix varnish then various weathering oils and powders as required.

Many thanks for your expert advice.

Do you know where to get Pledge Revive It. I have been searching online and it seems to be almost as hard to find as Klear. :(

Johnsons change their product names withy frustrating frequency; not only that, but they use different names in different regions of their worldmarket!

(At your own risk), try https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pledge-Multi-Surface-Polish-Liquid-Protector/dp/B073VPRMZH/ref=sr_1_6?adgrpid=69208170125&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI2Izo4aPl_AIVD5ftCh1VQg3tEAAYAiAAEgJhd_D_BwE&hvadid=351634720946&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=1006537&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=16118414285743817155&hvtargid=kwd-504971272924&hydadcr=28148_1724781&keywords=pledge%2Brevive&qid=1674737642&sr=8-6&th=1

The intended usage; the transparent bottle and colourless contents appear to be identical to the old Johnson's Klear.

I bought mine from Amazon in Apr 22.  Just checked, not available..!  Sure its just a supply chain issue.  Check out the video which shows and (available) alternative to Pledge..!  And then the link at the bottom...!

Any suggestions on Halfords paints approximating to Scotrail blue?

Vauxhall Atlantis blue to me is perfect and I've used it for various models but hasn't been in stock for a while at my local Halfords, I fear it has been discontinued. Seems to have been used on Vauxhalls from late 90's into 00's. I'm now using an airbrush so haven't bothered to look again.

I can't remember when i last saw a 90s Vauxhall on the road - therefore Halford's stock sales vs stock buying algorithm would mean that this is no longer sold in a pre-mixed can
