I have lived in Stockport all my life (67 years ) so found this thread intresting. I lived across the field from Brinnington Junction and watched all the railway activity here for many years. I was even lucky enough to go in the signal box with my brothers and throw a few levers. So I have dug out some of my black and white photos taken with a box brownie camera.

Enterprisingwestern,

thank you for comments. I wasn't sure they would good enough to put on here. They have been in a draw for over 50 years without seeing the light of day. When I go,my daughters will probably put them in a skip along with all my models. I still have a few more if people want to see them otherwise they will return to the draw in my workshop.

Yes please! A friend of mine is modelling Tiviot Dale station and any previously unseen photos are greatly appreciated for all the little details they include.

I have dug out a few more photographs this morning. They are not very good quality but they may be of interest to someone.

I will probably give these and other photographs to Stockport Library when I pop my clogs. I have donated some family ones already showing my grandfather plowing the fields in Brinnington with horses before the first war.

In my 1960 shedbook I note that Heaton Mersey had 3 class 08 shunters allocated to it. Never seen any photos of them, and I dont think that they even made it to George St goods, let alone Tiviot Dale station. Numbers were D3852-4 inclusive for the record. Anone got any images out there??

On a b&r video DVD (cant recall which one at the moment) there is black and white footage of a green one passing through Northenden station with a train of cement wagons.

Indeed, there's a nice shot of a train crossing the Mersey from the 70s?? over the now demolished bridge.

Yes it is a nice shot though the description says it is a Class 25 it looks more like a Class 24 to me. You can also see the now demolished tower block of Manchester Polytechnic’s Royal Ford Hall of Residence (off Parrs Wood Lane) in the background.

Is the first photo a shot of the old engine shed at Tiviot Dale?

Having driven through Stockport on the M60 not three hours ago, virtually nothing on that third last photo., of the goods going through the wreckage of the station, is still in existence.

Penrith Beacon,

Yes indeed it does show the remains of the engine shed. When the station was demolished a coupe of light fingered chaps were caught stealing the large copper ball cock, it was in all the local newspapers.

Really interesting photos. Thanks for posting them.  Views such as that with the 9F above showing the 'other' warehouse at Portwood are pretty rare.  I've only come across one or two showing the railway side frontage as a backdrop to a 4F etc on the Portwood shunt.  The goods warehouse right alongside the loops and opposite the coal drops is slightly better photographed.

Now I've written this I've just had a look at Britain from Above and found this:  https://britainfromabove.org.uk/en/image/EAW002113 .  Portwood Gas Works in the background helps work out the direction in which the photograph was taken.

Comparing that aerial photo with the one with the 9F seems to suggest that two thirds of the shed had been demolished by that time.

Perhaps, but I think it's more likely that the lower angle hides the two thirds of the cotton shed (I've fished out my copy of Greg Fox's book on Tiviot Dale etc) that is lower than the portion atop the embankment. It's an odd arrangement and one of those buildings where it would be fascinating to know how it was worked!

Feb 1968 is the date I've seen for demolition of the adjacent goods warehouse. I don't have a date for the cotton shed.

I spent longer than I care to calculate looking at record cards in Stockport Library in the early 1990s as my brother, a friend and I planned an N Gauge layout of STD and the line past Portwood drops up to this shed. Sadly it never got finished as university intervened.

The Georges Road end of the tunnel at Stockport is now completely history. This was last week.
