The CLC through Stockport

The gas holder is of the MAN type, a fixed tank with a large floating piston inside, neither rare nor common, there were examples in the North West at Southport & St Helens (amongst others).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gas_holder  Scroll down to dry seal type gasholder.

More useful info here on the more common type of gasholder   http://www.eugris.info/newsdownloads/Gasholders and their tanks.pdf

When Northenden became a cement terminal (goods facilities closed mid-1965, sidings taken over by Portland Cement) its cement products came from Earles Sidings, the sidings serving the Hope cement works (at some point Blue Circle now Lafarge?).  There was a flow from Earles to Widnes at one stage, certainly in the 1980s - I'm trying to remember if that featured in some of the end of steam views in one or more of the LM Steam Bradford Barton books.  I don't have access to these books to check at present.

Edit: There is an April 1968 J R Hillier view of 8F 48765 on 15 presflos near Edale in the BB book London Midland Steam in the Peak District. It is described as the Earles-Widnes.

Oh wow! I remember the bridge disappearing at some point in the 80s, but I was never was aware of how or when it was dismantled. Thanks a lot Michael!

Remember driving past it on the M63 (still?) to and from work; this is the one where Tesco is now?

The bridge of the Mersey is just down the road from where I live. The photograph of the signal box was the one controlling the entrance to Heaton Mersey shed. The M60 runs through here now . The other photograph is the tunnel at Brinnington with a class 60 heading towards Woodley on a winter's day.

No, that's at the other end of the line near Portwood. This bridge is over the Mersey to Cheadle Heath. This is the Google Maps location where it used to be.

Tesco is in Portwood  on the far side of the bridge over the river Tame immediately beyond the signal box shown here (by this time Tiviot Dale's only signal box).  The car park and supermarket are built on the site of the series of bridges known as Portwood Viaduct, the mill in the background of this shot and the adjacent coal drops/goods warehouse(s) site. Yes, reasonably common. Bradford gasworks (mis-named as it was in East Manchester, roughly where the Etihad stadium is now) also had a gasholder in a similar style - which could be seen from as far away as Heald Green (from one of the bridges over the Styal Line).

Southall also had a similar gasholder until recently, which was used as a landmark for pilots approaching Heathrow. There was a similar one on the approach to Northolt which on one occasion led to an airliner landing at the wrong location, after which the gasholders were lettered LH and NO respectively!

I first visited this thread a year or so ago as I was looking for information about a layout I wanted to build.  Having grown up in Cheadle I was always fascinated about what life was like in the era when my Dad was a kid.  Anyway I found this publication on ebay and it had a feature on Cheadle CLC Station which I thought I'd share.
