  • 1 month later...

Somehow I've managed to go a month without doing anything on factory lane...

What is the world coming to??? :resent:

Anyway there's some progress now! :danced:  (admittedly not much but hopefully enough to get the ball rolling again.) Basically what i've done is paint some of the pallets blue and weather them and stick down some greenery behind one of the bufferstops (to hide the fact that that bit of track is broken.)

That would have been it, but seeing how it was reasonably dry outside I decided to take half of the layout outside to get some pics in natural light (and wow iut looks so much better without the orange wall! :O )

I'll try to get the other half of the layout outside sometime soon and get some pics on that

Thanks for looking,

Alex

Alex, would some photos of my bridge be of use - it is made in a similar fashion to yours with some bits of B&Q plastic extrusions, and some Plastruct square rod. You can see a couple of initial photos here  http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/69522-in-the-time-honoured-words-of-rolf-harris/

but I can take some more closer ones if it will help

Brilliant as always Alex!

Thanks for the comments Swifty, I look forward to pics of your layout(s)? (I mean Portland Road/Parkway Container Terminal/ DRS layout, whatever it is now called...  :blum: )

Very nice, the 57 on its own looks great, my fav of the bunch.

Unfortunately I have to agree with you (it's meant to be an EWS depot not Virgin!). Now I have sorted out 57301's running issues it is becoming my favourite loco (wait until I get some DCC sound in my EWS fleet...  :mosking: )

Some great outdoor shots there, david

Thanks david, there's nothing quite like outdoor lighting for the layout :sungum:  unless anyone has an idea on how to get similar effects inside (but on a budget) - I'm open to suggestions as it's been on my to-do list for ages!

As always, comments welcome

Hi shortliner,

some close-ups would definitely be appreciated - its not easy to create a convincing bridge but youve managed to make one which really looks the part

thanks,

Alex

OK, I'll see what I can do - but it may be tomorrow, before I can get them up

Thanks shortliner, it doesn't really matter when you can get them up as I'm probably not going to be able to do a lot of work on the bridge until I have supplies from the model shop...

Hoping you werent going to ask that, as I've moved house I have a bigger train room (yesssss!!! :blum:) and I now have 15ft to play with so I thought, I can build a container terminal and with me having about 10 sheds I thought, perfect! And I have less drs stock than I thought. So for the time being at least it's on hold. However I will still run DRS stock on Parkway (new thread in my signature)

Anyway thanks for your support and I will do a tmd as some point. I promise!!

Okay - the bridge! First lets start with the ingredients, which all come from B&Q Supersheds  Start by looking in the offcut box for an off cut of laminate flooring this is a plastic-faced MDF with a plain tan or mottled surface one side and a wood finish the other - if you can't find any, 5mm MDF nwill do, but will give a rougher road surface. It looks like this - ignore the rest of the picture for the moment

Now visit the plastic extrusion rack - usually found along with metal strip and shapes and you need to get a length of each of these - ignore the bit at the bottom for the moment

post-6688-0-60224700-1365847073_thumb.jpg

and then the wood shapes bit for these - the bottom one is 15mm hardwood dowel

post-6688-0-26645100-1365847213_thumb.jpg

You also need some pine 25mm x 20mm and 15mm x 20mm

Decide on the width and length of the bridge you require, and cut to size from the plastic-faced MDF.Glue lengths of the15mm x 15mm strip to the underside lengthways at suitably spaced intervals

 - as my bridge is a 4 lane carriageway I used 5 strips

post-6688-0-92195100-1365848606_thumb.jpg

Decide the height required and assemble the supports 25mm x 20mm at the bottom (on edge), 3 lengths of the 15mm dowel as columns (the number required depends on the width of the bridge) and the 10mm x 20mm (with its end cut at an angle) on the top

post-6688-0-15333200-1365848901_thumb.jpg

Spray these supports with Rustoleum Textured paint in "Desert Bisque" - if it is not in stock, B&Q can order it for you as they did for me.

Now for the deck - push the U shaped extrusion onto the sides of the deck - I used an offcut of cork floor tile to take up the excess space - multiple strips of cereal packet cut to width would work as well - It needs to fit tightly - you can see it at the sides in the top photo

Now for the railings.  Take the "lipped" extrusion and cut two pieces to the length of the bridge.  Measure and mark for posts (A in the pictures)  - mine are at 50mm centres and 4mm wide. Using an Xacto saw and one of their aluminium  cutting guides, cut each post from the edge of the wide bit down to the lip, and then , using a coping saw, fretsaw or box-knife , cut (VERY CAREFULLY) between the posts along the line of the lip (B in photos). You may need to sand or trim the edge of the extrusion where you have cut.  These lines of posts need to be glued (CA or similar) along the plastic U extrusion along the sides of the deck - due to the angle of the lip they will lean inwards slightly , as in the prototype. When they are dry, use CA to add 3 or 4 rails from the 1mm x 1mm plastruct rod, (C in the photos) glued to the back of the posts. I masked off the rails and the edges and sprayed the deck with grey primer - road markings were done with paint markers. Glue the deck onto the supports and fix in place

The rest of the photos show the bridge,  and the last two show alternative supports - cut from the plastic-faced MDF and 4 rails from microstrip, instead of 3 - note that on this one the deck-edge is simply 25mm x 25mm plastic extrusion

Thank you - they are surpisingly easy to make - living up here far away from model shops you get used to trying to work out how to make-it-from-odds-&-s*ds that you can get hold of locally

Edit - forgot to add - the CA I'm using is called Vitalbond CA THICK, and I'd recommend it - works very well indeed

Thanks for posting that, some really great modelling there. When I get some supplies in I'll be sure to try doing some of the things you have done

Cheers :)
