JBM37404
Great stuff, spent years on the coast behind the 37s and first time have seen it done so well in model form. Was on 37403s first run from Crewe to Bangor as it was brought down from Scotland so the picture of it brought back some memories. Over time practically every livery of 37 worked in North Wales in the 90s including 37275 in plain blue and 37408 in Large logo right through to EWS and DRS. RMweb Premium Grafarman Posted February 9, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 9, 2015 Thank you all for your comments; clearly the 37's in particular have struck a chord, which is interesting as I always preferred the 40's! However, the 37's will stay along with the others, but next time we move onto 66's, 158's and other assorted units... Back soon David
RMweb Premium Grafarman Posted February 20, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 20, 2015 Ok so now we're approaching the end of the era defined, and as promised 158's and 66's rule! The Coast received a lot of 'foreign' visitors during the 00's and this train was no exception; I'm not sure this particular livery made it over the border, but there are well-documented Strathclyde PTE 158's in attendance at Prestatyn so I don't think this is beyond the bounds of possibility! The model is the Farish unit with TPM ends and light weathering... While that one's ticking over in Platform 3, a double-headed Freightliner rake of VGA's shakes the ground as it passes through on the Down Slow; I've grown quite fond of the 'sheds' that travel the length of the Coast... But the best livery for them has to be this one; 66181 in EWS colours taking empties back to Crewe: It's all turqoise and cream passenger stock in the next post... RMweb Premium Grafarman Posted February 21, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 21, 2015 And here they are, resplendent in their Arriva Trains Wales livery; firstly a Class 158 2-car unit on a fast stopper from Chester to Bangor - again, the ends are TPM; a vast improvement on the Farish originals! Then my personal favourite (from seeing them on the Llanrwst line), a Class 150 trundles into Platform 3 with a local service from Llandudno Junction: Then a Class 153 exits the Bay Platform on the Down Slow on its way to the Conwy Valley via Betws-y-Coed, which is where I first photographed one of these: Almost done now; just one more set of pics to finish off this section, and that will be of something a little faster and sleeker...! Andrew P
Hi David, love the new pics, really brings it to life seeing the Arriva Wales 153 from my visit to Llanwrst a couple of years ago. Such a nice Layout.
Jintyman
Nice touch with the 153 in the bay for the Conwy Valley line. If I remember correctly there used to be a Heritage DMU service from the coast that reversed at Llandudno Jct'n and went up to Blaenau. It was late afternoon, but not sure if it started in Rhyl or Prestatyn. I rode it a couple of times, great if the driver left the blinds retracted!!!! Jinty ;-)

I think the same unit occasionally appeared in Chester - Green 101 with a yellow warning panel perchance? JB

jivebunny
I've just had a quick look on Flickr and it would seem it was indeed the same unit - 101685 - although I only remember ever seeing it in the central bays at Chester so perhaps it was more frequently used on the Manchester services. Here it is at Chester just in from Manchester - in 2000! 101685 Chester by andyk37, on Flickr Going by the locations in this collection of results, I don't see any reason for it not to have stopped in Prestatyn. HTH, JB (I'm going to have to buy a green 101 for Chester General now that Jintyman's brought this up!)
branchie
No pictures David but plenty of childhood/ teenage memories! I think there a couple of pictures on Flickr ..... Whilst I also remember the special advertising poster that was produced at the time. Layouts looking good btw.
branchie
Have a look at the Penmorfa website for some more information. Class 101685 was repainted in Heritage Green. There's a picture on the Conwy Valley page, on the Betws & Pont y Pant section.
RMweb Premium Grafarman Posted February 21, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 21, 2015 Thanks chaps; the Penmorfa site is one of my regular haunts but I didn't clock the green DMU's - mind you, I never knew until a couple of years ago that Dave Sallery used to stand on the same bridge as me just east of Prestatyn to watch the trains, only he had a camera and I didn't; guess we always just missed each other...! One of my childhood memories from the 70's is my whole family traveling on a decrepit blue DMU from Prestatyn to Bleanau Ffestiniog one evening in the pouring rain just so we could use up our North Wales Rover ticket - anyone remember them?! ian b
Don't think 101683 was repainted into green around that time- 101685 was definitely a greeny though and was nicknamed Daisy after the Thomas the Tank Engine character!
RMweb Premium Grafarman Posted February 22, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 22, 2015 And finally...! Super Voyager 221109 Marco Polo makes the return journey from Holyhead to Euston stopping briefly at Prestatyn, all the time being watched forlornly by 57301 Scott Tracy simmering in the Bay platform... Having been given the way ahead Marco exits the station heading east, and all is quiet once again... Back shortly with one more post... David
jivebunny
Lovely stuff! I can't help but think that lamppost in the first shot presents a bit of a trip hazard to trainspotters though I wish I could switch between time periods like you can. I'd love to run modern image stuff on Chester General, but as the track layout and surrounding area changed drastically between the 80s and 2000s it would mean having to swap out an entire module to cover the disappearance of the carriage works and major rationalisation and rebuilding of the MPD. It could possibly be done with a bit of modeller's licence though, I'll have to think about it. On the plus side the layout changes reduces my rolling stock costs by restricting me to 1983 to 1999, whilst still allowing me to cover BR Blue, sectorisation and early privatisation. I may nick the idea of swapping out buildings depending on time periods though, as one of the main landmarks next to the station burnt down in the mid-90s... We'll just need a module representing the rest of the North Wales Coast and we can link up our layouts JB
RMweb Premium Grafarman Posted February 22, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 22, 2015 Hi All, Well, it’s been just shy of three years since I started this thread, and at last I believe we’ve come to its natural conclusion. There isn’t really any more to do on Prestatyn that I can show you, so I thought now would be an appropriate time to draw it to a close. It has been a joy and privilege to build Prestatyn alongside all of you who have chipped in with constructive criticisms, modelling hints and tips and unsolicited praise; I couldn’t have done it without your help and encouragement for which I thank you; it has been a very steep learning curve but very enjoyable! As my first ‘proper’ layout it was a huge honour to be featured as Layout of the Month in BRM December 2014, and much credit must go to Andy York for his stunning pictures which really ‘lifted’ the layout and made it presentable to the wider public. Prestatyn in N will carry on of course; I still intend to automate the fiddle yard so I can ‘watch the trains go by’ but this will be done in the privacy of my own home, where I can run all my ‘Rule One’ trains and spend some time relaxing and enjoying the fruit of my labours. If the wiring process goes well I may post a thread in the ‘layout electrics’ area...we’ll see! The layout has been returned to its original state reflecting the period I began with, and will stay like this for the foreseeable future; it was an interesting and enjoyable exercise to bring it into the 21st Century, but my heart wants it back in the days when Summers were longer (and warmer!) and Blue 40’s ruled the rails! So to sign off Andy Y has given me permission to some of his pictures from the BRM spread which most eloquently depict Prestatyn in N as originally intended: Thank you again for following and contributing; see you around the forum! sp1
Thank you for sharing Prestatyn with us - I no longer model in N, and to me 'modern' means anything powered by diesel, but your layout is truly inspirational!

RMweb Premium Grafarman Posted February 24, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 24, 2015 Trying to remember if she's built for exhibiting or just enjoying? Prestatyn was originally designed to break up into sections for possible exhibiting, but as the build went on this changed and it remains 'a layout that never leaves home' - my next layout of Llangollen in OO will hopefully be exhibitable...we'll see!
Black Sheep
Yeh, I'm wondering about Milliedale on Sea being exhibitable instead of just capable of being moved incase we move house (slotting under the eves in the loft room makes it hard to work out how everything builds into place)
RMweb Premium Grafarman Posted February 25, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 25, 2015 Certainly worth aiming for, as it gives you that extra option, but make sure and build it into the initial plan because as I found out with Prestatyn, once it's changed it's very hard to go back! Llangollen is being designed with this in mind from the start so I'm hoping it'll work out ok...check out the thread (see link below) to see how I'm attempting it... Thanks for the input David
Purley Oaks
Thanks for sharing Prestatyn, brought back memories. Looking forward to Llangollen already. Mal
C&WR
Sorry to see the end of this, but look forward immensely to Llangollen! A very quick query. In one of AY's pictures there is a Post Office POS in a rake of Mk1s. Is this intended to be a mail train or would a POS be put in a passenger rake? I would like more excuses to run my OO one!
