Jules
Cannot believe it was April the last time I added anything to this! Mind you, I haven't done much since - rather lost my modelling 'mojo' but it seems to be coming back a bit. Anyway, inspired by BlackRats Carrick Road layout in last months ModelRail, I noticed that he had modified the Bachmann goods shed with canopies etc. I had already added advertising posters to mine, but thought I would add a small canopy over the rail side of the shed. This was partly because I only had a small amount of valencing left from building the station building and I also thought a full length canopy was a bit overkill for the location. Anyway, here are the pics, the usual dodgy quality! End on Rail side Road side And a gratuitous one of the general area Edited November 7, 2022 by Jules Images lost - not on HDD
Jules
Not strictly layout, but it relates to previous posts... As mentioned in previous posts in this topic, I am lacking wagons from (mainly) the LMS and LNER, so I have started to rectify this! First up is a Cambrian (kit manufacturer not the railway!!) LNER 6 plank open wagon. This is the first time I have built one of their kits and it goes together just as easily as a Parkside or Ratio kit. So here are a couple of exciting pics! I have noticed that the side I have chosen to photo as the E a bit on the piss which is slightly annoying! In the background can be seen a couple of LMS wagons - these are Airfix ones I have picked up for a few quid at shows. I have some Slaters LMS wagons to build, so watch this space for more excitment Just got to slot the couplings into their pockets to complete Edited November 7, 2022 by Jules Images lost - not on HDD
RMweb Gold Mikkel Posted December 4, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 4, 2011 Hi Jules, really nice 6-planker. I like how the goods yard is developing, the view from a distance shows a fair amount of depth to the scene which looks good. Those boxy crates are nice, what manufacturer are they from?
Jules
Hi Mikkel Thanks for the kind words. The crates are Hornby ones from 2006 (R8596). They are not 'Skaledale' so they might have had a bit of a longer production run. There were seven different sizes of crate in the pack. Hope that helps Jules
The Great Bear
Good to see some more progress, Jules. The NE wagon kit looks good, something I'll have to bear in mind. I like the mix of wagons in the yard, especially the ones from other companies. I might have a look for the crates too.
Jules
A little bit more has been done on the slow development of Mayshill... The goods shed has had a lamp added, a bit of greenery around the base to try and make it look a bit more bedded in and the base was also treated to a bit of black weathering. Also added a porter with a box, which I have just noticed has a rather prominent molding pip on it (so how did I miss it?!). I also added a random bicycle - perhaps it is the porter in the picture? I have also started to add a few people to the station itself - I do dislike the fiddly nature of people painting, stirring the paint to do one brush stroke! Well I suppose it can't all be fun! I have some more people painted and ready to plant, I am just deciding on where to place them. Anyway, a few bandwidth filling pictures to be going on with... This one was trying to be arty... Jules
I tiny bit more progress on the goods yard area. A bit more has been covered in grass, a few more bits left lying around, and some bloke ambling along! As usual, the slightly dodgy pics show the massive changes...
The Great Bear
Once again really good photos, I particularly like the "arty" one looking through the goods shed. What make are the figures used, did they come painted?
Stuart-AU
HI.. Very nice layout, you have done a great job of building it.. Thanks for sharing. Stuart
Jules
Thanks for the compliments chaps. The figures are a mixture. Some of them are the old Airfix railway ones which i must have had for 30 odd years. The have appeared on most of my layouts, being repainted each time. These are probably their best coating so far1 The other figures are the Merit/Modelscene. they come painted, but have all been either repainted or the existing paint touched in as the 'as bought' finish is rather crude, but they are fairly cheap. I think the Airfix figures are better, as they are a bit more 3d, the Merit/Modelscene are a bit flat. I think the old Airfix ones are still available from Dapol. Jules
No changes or additions to the layout, but I thought I would post some piccies of some train movements. Unfortunately, they haven't come out quite as clearly as I had hoped, but the layout isn't situated ideally with respect to the window. Anyway, I hope someone finds them slightly interesting 4550 arrives with a Fruit D and B set After pushing the stock clear, runs into headshunt to run round Draws the coaches clear of the van Pulls the van from the headshut to place in the siding Then starts a spot of shunting Couples to the stock and has a drink! Pushes the stock back into the platform. Not sure why all those passengers haven't joined the train - there isn't another one for hours! The freight arrives behind 3715 and then the shunting starts and then departs Thanks for looking Edited November 7, 2022 by Jules Images lost - not on HDD
Unicorn1
That's a really nice set of pics, the backlight can be a problem - but these look great to me! Les.
Jules
Thanks Les The layout would photograph a lot better if it was on the other side of the room, unfortunately there is the slight problem of the door being in the way!
Jules
A few more dodgy snaps from yesterdays session First up - the cliche arrives!! I really must get round to getting a driver and passengers for the autocoach so it can be finished! Next, the 45 is back doing a bit more shunting And finally, a Collet goods arrives with a parcels train. Mayshill must be a very productive place to warrant this, and four different locos in one day
The Great Bear
Does look a busy place! The cattle seem to have been forgotten about, when are they being picked up? As I've said before, the autocoach and 14xx do look good - another reminder to move them up the to-do list. Do you uncouple manually, I can't see a ramp? Jon
Jules
Hi Jon Yes I do uncouple manually, using a mixture of a bent paper clip in a cork and a flat rectangle of brass soldered to a bit of rod attached to an old razor handle! The choice depends on how close the stock is coupled, as there are a mixture of Airfix, Bachman and Hornby tension locks. The 14xx and auot have screw-link couplings, and remain permanently coupled! RMweb Premium M.I.B Posted January 9, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 9, 2012 Love this layout. Thanks for all of the recent photos, especially the ones showing "arrival, bit of shunting, departure".
Unicorn1
Hi Jules More great pics. I like the details on the Autocoach. I too uncouple using whatever I can, thick card strips or plasticard! I have settled on small Bachmann style couplings for now on Bishpscombe, and I find I can get Hornby ones the same size too. Mayshill might just be the thing to get me taking some more pictures and maybe start a thread! Les

Parklanerob
Hi Jules, first of all, i have to say a great piece of modelling and source of inspiration for those of us with quite limited space. i have just picked up from my parent's home the small collection of GWR stock that I built up with my grandad (mainline Manor & Mogul, B-set, Autocoach and an airfix large Prairie - all of which has not been used for c20yrs, a weekend of testing awaits!). My other half has banished my thoughts of world domination to the small guestroom in our house which will give me c 8ft to play with (6ft viewing area). This will be a first attempt at building a model railway and your almost step by step guide has been great in helping formulate a plan. Thank you for sharing your model with us.

Jules
Just a few random shots from playing operating this morning And a couple of B&W ones. Unfortunately, the camera doesn't have a B&W mode, so these have been messed about with in an editing program. The originals are available if anyone wishes! Unicorn1
Morning Jules Some great shots again, the B&W ones look especially good. Forgive me if you have posted already - but may I ask what sort of camera you have used for these? I use my SLR for most shots, but it can't get into all the places on the layout that I'd like. A nice low angle of the arriving freight too. Les
