Hi ,knowing you as I do Marc, this will be another benchmark to reach,c'mon get going and then load the pics

I just remembered I have some silver fox class 22 bogie side frames which might be quite appropriate for Cashmores

See you soon....

I know, I know - I've been rather busy, making my new "train room"

Bits of layouts, and blue boxes are spread all over the house,

so it has been difficult to get time to take some piccies...

... let alone find somewhere with sufficient clear space to take the pics :O

But rest assured, work is progressing on the layout -

I grab half an hour here & there......

I've done ballasing, installed some concrete floor, around the main building,

and my retaining wall is all but ready to install

My point switches are in place - but I still need to wire them.....

I've been rusting up & weathering a few wagons, in readiness for running to meet their maker....

... and collecting all manner of bits 'n pieces for the scrap piles....

That said, class 22 bogie side frames will be a welcome addition to Cashmores huge pile of scrap metal

thank you Brian :)

Cheers all

Hi folks,
Appologies for not posting pics sooner,
but daylight hours (and dry ones at that!) have been scarce....
and I haven't had space to set up for photos indoors.....

....Until I get my railway room that is..... woo hoo!

Anyhow, some pics;

An 08, re-wheeled with 2nd hand Ultrascale EM wheelsets (1 of 2 I've done recently)
a shabby Pannier, which has been in store for some time,

And some tenders - old Airfix kits I made decades back...
... I've been cutting the coal out of these, re-applying transfers,
and re-weathering (I rustied them originally)

The main building at Cashmores is under construction,

as are the folding fiddle cassettes, and the whole thing needs weeds and weathering...

I'm looking forward to building my scrap piles!!!

At Swindon last year, I picked up a bargain from Dapol Dave :)
It was a brand new class 22 - for £50!!!

It was one among a batch of "rejects"
It simply needed the glazing re-fitting at one end

Anyhow, I have a green one, and it's superb
However, I was never quite happy with the colour of the blue version

so at that price, I couldn't resist the temptation to have a bash at a re-paint...
It's not an entire re-spray - I just picked out a few panels, in Games Workshop
"Ultra Marine Blue" and a few other, darker shades
Did some rusting and weathering, and I'm quite happy with it now

Having seen several shots of these locos in even scabbier condtion,
I'm going to have another go....  this time, I'll  weather one side slightly further than the other

My thinking here, being that I'll be operating cashmores at differing periods;
I'll initially have a green 08, bringing steam locos to the yard for disposal...

... the 22 will also bring steam locos, wagons etc in,

but when turned around.... it will be making its final journey into the yard

I visited on 2 occasions - to see the southern region 71's that were scrapped there
The bottom view is something akin to the sight I was greeted with, after clambering through the fence...
only it was a 71, rather than a 22 which looked both awesome, and sad.....

Maybe you could become the preferered scrapyard for all RMweb members layouts! :locomotive:

A layout with a difference however a little depressing!

XF

Hi XF,

Yes, it could be seen as "depressing"

However, I've always felt scrapyards are as atmospheric as they are sad....

Maybe it was all that clambering over rusting hulks in Barry, as a kid?

In my efforts to try to produce something a little different,

I hope I don't end up making everyone else feel a little depressed......

Cheers

EDIT: I should add that most of the traffic into Cashmores,

will be the small stock-pile of old wagons, and wagon bits I've been acquiring on the cheap....

Looking good Marc!

Years ago some one on the circuit had a little diorama in a clear plastic display box - the title ran - 'Thomas meets Gethin the Gas Axe, 'Oh b*gger' says Thomas.........'

a shabby Pannier, which has been in store for some time,

That's pretty poor Marc, you could have cleaned it before taking the pics ;)

Nice looking layout and you've made a good job of the 22!

Glad to see your making progress with this one, it would be a shame to let all those cast wheels go to waste! I really like that retaining wall, excellent modelling! Infilling some of the arches with brick and some with stone is a really nice touch. Don't worry about the layout being deppressing, I for one love a bit of urban grot!

Thanks Dave,

I know, like myself, you like a bit of grot, as well as the pretty chocolate-box style of modelling...
It's just that I seem to prefer modelling the grotty these days.....
Perhaps I overdid the pretty Great Western Branch line when we both modelled EM GWR?.....

Yes, the retaining wall at Cashmores was a mixture
It's funny, but my memory of it, was that it was all large-ish stone blocks,
a-la Wills Stone sheets

However, a google search will reveal a mainly stone wall,
with some brick and some stone infills
Also several brick pillars, and the odd area, which is mid-left on my model,
there seems to have been a girder bridge which was bricked up.....

The wall had a gentle curve, as I've modelled

but the curve isn't so obvious in the pictures....

Cheers again

Edit: PS. I will use all those wheels you cast up for me Dave.... honest
in fact, are you free to do another batch? ;)

Hi Marc,

All looking very nice, & looking forward to seeing it in the 'flesh' at Taunton.

This brings back happy memories of my Dad & I wandering about the site in the rain, in the sixties.

I certainly didn't  realise that it was such a fleeting glimpse, rather than a fun way to get of of visiting the dusty old relatives.

Both Cashmores & Woodhams were favourite venues for escaping the dry cake & stewed tea!

It's only these days that I now realise why my Dad would go a little misty eyed, seeing his favourite locos rusting away & being put to the torch.

I'm fairly certain that he took a number of photographs, & I'll have a dig through his albums & try to get them to you (b&w only I'm afraid).

Keep up the good work, it's really going to be a little beaut.

Cheers

Rob

Thanks Rob, and everyone else, for your kind words

I've thought all along, that a scrapyard is an odd one to model,

I know not everyone is going to like it, as several have said - a scrapyard is a sad place......

I can understand your Dad going misty-eyed

I really only went to Cashmores and Barry, to clamber over engines,

and to "cop" locos I knew I'd never see again

but both sites left an indellible picture in my mind,

and that's what I feel the need to re-create.....

The superb "Woodmores" scrapyard is a wonderful diorama,

but I wanted something with at least a little movement....

For those interested, the "main" fiddle, on the left of the plan

is intended be a fold-down cassette-type arrangement

I may just use one sliding track, to shunt between roads,

or possibly hack a Peco Loco lift, to EM gauge......

The road at the front left is a disused piece of rusty old track

- to be covered in a pile of metal

Cheers again

EDIT: PS, I'd really like to see those old black & white pics Rob - yes please

There aren't too many photos of the site around - at least not that I can find :)

Hi Marc

I'm wiping away a tear, but it still looks good to me! Very emotive...... Also, I seem to remember that I have a yellowing copy of Dai Woodham's yard that was printed in the Daily Telegraph many years ago that clearly illustrated the long lines of condemned locos, all awaiting their undignified fate........Oops, here come the tears again........

Cheers & look forward to hearing from you soon. All the best

Don't worry about those tears Dave!
You're among the sort of folk who fully understand here....

My heart sank, when a while ago I heard that the old footbridge into Canton depot was to be pulled down!
I spent many a happy hour on that bridge, staring down at locos and watching the movements to & fro....

A sad thought indeed - and it isn't even a loco I'm thinking about!

Will be in touch shortly dave....
