Julian
Just home from a visit to Buffers, Axminster, Devon. Picked up my pre-ordered Hornby Maunsell push-pull set, £64.95. Also got some LGB track pieces, everything I wanted in stock. Fantastic shop, wonderful range of both r-t-r and all those hard-to-find accessories. Lots of items you see reviewed in mags but wonder where to get them - magnifying spectacles, railway greetings cards, books, some local railway DVDs, full range of Tamiya weathering powders, many, many packs of Preiser and Noch figures and scenic items, squillions of glues and specialist tools, materials etc, to name but a very few. The two ladies who run the business there are terrific characters and knowledgeable too. Free tea/coffee on-tap and they are immensely welcoming. Not many shops where they ask you if you know why a "Dukedog" was so-callled but they knew the answer (said I was obviously an "anal fart" when I said I knew the answer too, all in very good fun. Lovely, lovely people!). This was my second visit: they run a great loyalty card service and will order anything you need, by all accounts. In over 30 years of visiting model railway shops, this is possibly THE best I've been to. Superb!!! Highly reommended, folks.
RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted October 27, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 27, 2014 Yup, was in there recently and it is a gold mine/ Aladdin's cave etc. Well worth a visit or at least a web look. Phil
Dr Gerbil-Fritters
I shall be visiting over the New Year, as we traditionally spend New Year in Lyme Regis and a visit to Buffers is now an established part of our hols!
cromptonnut
I've been visiting there ever since I was a child and the shop was actually a petrol station (Mini Milk for 5p, anyone?). Always happy with the service at the model shop.
Jan
Only been the once, but I can thorougly recommend the experience. A definite Something For Everyone experience. Oh! for a larger wallet....
Killybegs
I was in there a couple of weeks ago. Good stock, great service and pleasant staff. I was even offered a cup of coffee when I walked it. You can't ask for more than that
Focalplane
I visited today, for the first time, and am very impressed with the shop, the people and the stock. Good stock of three link couplings and lots of bits and pieces other shops never seem to have in stock. Plus, and this is my big complaint about many shops, they leave the locos in their boxes! I will not buy a loco for over £100 that has been taken out of its box and put in a glass case. All those add on bits inevitably get lost or broken, not to mention the loco itself can be damaged from too much handling. What else? Too many good things and tough to make purchasing decisions. I have signed up to their loyalty program and learned that international mail order is no problem.
acko22
Ok never been to the shop itself but used the webpage: www.buffersmodelrailways.com At the moment they are selling exclusive Transrail class 60s at 50 quid DCC read and 80 quid for DCC fitted, no even by my tight arse that's amazing value hence I have bought 2! There are loads of great offers on at the minute I would really suggest having a look especially if like me you model era 8 / 9 for an amazing bargin for class 60 and in OO if you model steam their is 7 engines on offer! A proper sale well worth having a look!
cromptonnut
Too new for my period sadly but I would have liked a bargain Tug.
acko22
At 50 notes I would invoke rule 1 my railway I will run what the bloody hell I want! Even if it was a kettle steam engine! Edited January 9, 2015 by acko22
cromptonnut
Perhaps but I'd rather spend the £50 on something that fits rather than something for the sake of it as it was a bargain
acko22
Fair one, I had to come off as there was a few bits that was tempting me but have to behave (for now) There is a lot of stuff on other at the minute, but the locos really stood out, never know may have something suitable come up for you in the future! Keith George
As far as I am concerned Buffers is the very best model shop in the South West, particularly concerning the friendly helpful attitude of the staff. None of the gruff grunting you get in some model shops. Keith
brianusa
When visiting holiday shops, how many buy and how much? Such visits are useful when its raining but surely you have all you want is at home or whatever you need can be bought closer to home. When we come home on holiday, I always make a point of visiting some convenient hobby shop or preserved line as normally I don't have that luxury. Sometime I have been lucky and found the exact item I'm looking for, other times no luck at all. Brian.
cromptonnut
I make a point of going into Buffers every time I am passing. I have family nearby but have a model shop in my home town (plus 2 others within 10 miles and one within 40 miles I frequent), 150 miles away from Buffers. However there's always something for me to buy, whether I knew I wanted it or not. I don't know what it's like in the US (I've only ever visited two model shops when I have been over there) but over here most shops have their own particular nuances, and will often stock "odd things" you can't get from other nearby shops. westcountryman
I ordered the Dapol, Stanbury & Sons of Barnstaple, gunpowder van on Thursday, & it arrived by courier this morning, Saturday, excellently packaged, & I am once again delighted by the exemplary service that Buffers provides. Their range of exclusive limited editions featuring local subject matter is simply wonderful, & the ladies are lovely to deal with. Congatulations Buffers, one more very happy customer. 71H
Fantastic shop Buffers. More helpful than some of the other shop's I can tell you. When I purchase items, the staff enter the items on their computer and give you points. You can then redeem your points towards p & p, other items etc, fantastic ! Buffers are the only ones I have come across that do the points thing. Fast delivery as some of you say, cannot fault Buffers, well, i could if i'm honest.......to many cups of tea and by the time I'm have way home, my bladder is ready to burst !!!! Great model shop, highly recommend it.
