Does anyone have a list of what was on display that day, in particular the 50 just inside in the Factory? I went on the Sunday, on 5051/92220. I still have a coal ovoid that may have accidentally jumped into my bag whilst I was eating sarnies.....

Hello Rodent279

Me and My Father was at this open day. I was 7 years old at the time but it remember it well as it was the first time I had seen the APT and fell in love with it .

I have found a list of number he has in a note book from that day

50003,47158,47107,47503,47501,08825,31260,31207,47500,50036,47513,55014,37180,31414,31273,08794,73142,56037,47070,47032,47143,50001,50030,50015,08798,86209,33025,47060,31412,08651, HST 43174, EMU 315850, Steam 5051, 92220 and APT 370001 for which he has only wrote down one side number 48107. Don't suppose anyone knows exactly what formation the APT was  -Which particular coaches  were in the formation?

As an aside we went to Wilsden Depot after and saw

08681,85028,08890,83011,25279,25095,87023,87026,86216,862422,86210.

Someone more knowledgeable will be along soon to correct me, no doubt, but I believe the pipes protruding from the axlebox of the APT are to do with the hydrokinetic brake-maybe sensing oil pressure, temperature etc.

Fascinating train, quite the best looking & most graceful to run in Britain. I'm really lucky to have been on it on a run from Euston to Crewe, in November 1980. Still got the ticket somewhere. Pendos are mere pretenders to the crown!

A couple of photos taken by my father. Not many I'm afraid as he had a 7 and 10 year old boys to keep an eye on! From the moment this little 7 year old saw that APT he fell in love with it.

Remember begging for a  Hornby one!

A bit of a thread resurrection, but as APT is the topic de jour...

I was at the Open Day too, and I don't think that APT formation is quite correct. 48106 is a DTS (Driving Trailer Second), and it was a 9-car set.

My notes say from the county end - 48107-48201-48406-48303-48503-48607-49002-48601-48101

Or to put it another way - DTS-TS-TRSB-TU-TF-TBF-NDM-TBF-DTS (9)

A pretty mixed formation, with cars from 5 out of the 7 sets.

In addition to the list above from trailrage I can add the following

47416, 47561, 50010, 50021 and 50046

An anomaly crops up in the video in that it shows a picture of 08793 but neither trainrage's dad or I have it recorded at OOC on that day.

I also "did" Willesden and IIRC so did lots of others which resulted in the British Transport Police being called.  I was almost out of the gate when they arrived.

I got around Willesden too, but must have been before the BTP showed up! Suprisingly for an electic depot, WN was always easy to get around.

I have got 08793 recorded, it was in a line of I think four at the Paddington end of Old Oak. The line was 08480, 651, 793, and 947. There were several 47s and 50s moving on and off shed, so I have a slightly different set again.

Question for @stationmaster - what arrangements were made for maintenance work, and for loco movements on & off shed while the open day was on? Were movements carried out at night?

What if in an emergency you needed one of the locos on display, during the opening hours, while the shed was full of normals?

Various locos and the breakdown vans were put out in the yard sidings adjacent to the depot so they could get in and out without using the Engine Line which was all secured from everywhere else to allow the shuttle service to work.  At that time Ranelagh Bridge was still available for servicing so that wasn't a problem.

The APT was a set that was being used for various trials and it was all a bit 'touch and go' as to whether or not it would actually turn up.  It was the last thing to arrive, sometime on the Friday evening and it caused a bit of consternation as itwas shunted in because - for whatever reason - the vehicles appeared to be leaning all over the place and I began to wonder if it had somehow managed to get itself derailed - fortunately it hadn't.

Didn't realise Ranelagh Bridge lasted that long-I thought it had closed in 1980!

So basically OC was closed for the weekend, anything requiring repair would have been done at RB, and anything in the Open Day was locked in for the weekend?

I recall certain areas were still operational for the Sunday diagrams. There is a programme of the event here which gives a little more info.

I think the big problem was keeping 'enthusiasts out!!  It was very well stewarded between the admin block and the end boundary past the temporary platform but not so easy at the other end.  one of my photos on the previous page shows various locos and the breakdown vans further over  than the 47 Road.

We didn't have the luxury of Ranelagh Bridge at the following event for GWR150. I was one of those manning the servicing shed at OC on the late shift, but I think we only had 2 or 3 locos to deal with. Most had been diagrammed by control to be dealt with elsewhere....

Thanks for the clarification.  I think my error had been pointed out previously and I couldn't resolve it from what I had erroneously recorded in my notebook.

Some memories there! I think the photo of the miniature railway, the 7 1/4 gauge steam loco is "tiny", driven by i think the (must) be late Tony Challins, form the Harrow and Wembley Society of Model Engineers.

I just found this thread as I did a internet search to check the date of the open day and loco's attending as I am using lockdown to catalogue my slide collection.

After attending the open day I went up to Paddington to get pictures of the shuttle, along with many other I used the balcony of the flats just outside.

Interesting pictures of "clag"
