The scenery team have been busy with a tin of yacht varnish adding a gloss coat to the water representation...

How many times have you seen a log pond modelled on a UK based layout?

More progress albeit slow. We now have a fiddleyard/main control panel. Here it is in test mode doing an impression of a Christmas tree. Sorry about the reflections from the workshop lights the top panel is somewhat shiny!

The idea is that it is fairly simple for the operator. To set a route you simply push the button representing the starting point, then the button for the end point followed by the "set" button. Some routes require the pressing of a "via" button to disambiguate, for instance when traversing the Romsey curve. When a button is pressed a red LED lights next to it to confirm the system saw you press it. These red LEDs flash until you press enough buttons to define a valid route at which point they come on continuously.

When the set button has been pushed and the system has set the route appropriate LEDs are lit to show the route set and the red LEDs go out. To unset a route simply press the button corresponding to the destination of the route then press "clear". Up routes are indicated by yellow LEDs, down by blue and shunt moves within the fiddleyard by green LEDs. Simples!

Underneath things are not quite so simple...

There are few wires under here. Good job it's DCC!

There is an LCD information panel (not yet fitted), 3 Arduino microcontrollers, 24 assorted shift register ICs, 41 push to make switches, 144 resistors, about 250 LEDs, a handful of other components and a lot of wire and solder. Scarily it mostly works!

More to do.

Cheers

Now that we have a nice shiny control panel, running has been in full effect. Here's a couple of videos of some VEPs and TCs running around. NSE a little too late for 1967 but not my period!

A few images also. A wide variety of stock is being used to test the layout sequence, it also demonstrates the club's spectrum of interest!

The fiddle yard. The 5 cream coloured lines to the left are the Romsey lines, the blue are the Freight sidings (which allow access to any part of the layout), red are Up lines and green are Down lines.

Getting perilously close to Southampton show so lots of activity around the club. No more soldering on control panels but I can't seem to let the soldering iron go cold. Roped in to produce some railings for the signal box...

Sometimes you get a bit sidetracked by small details. Somebody mentioned fire buckets so I had to see if my 3D printer could solve the problem. Looks like it did...

These are small, really small. The buckets are a smidgeon under 4mm tall and the handles are about 0.3 of a millimetre across.

Lots to do.

Redbridge and the Winchester Railway Modellers are exhibiting at Fareham Railex this weekend 5th/6th October.

Lots of progress since our last exhibition in January, including further detailing, a backscene, lighting gantry, and even a 4-REP/4-TC!

Come and see us if you can. We'll be running mid and late 1960s.

Redbridge recently had another outing to a local show at Romsey.  This was the first time we have had all the elements of the layouts presentation in place with backscene, lighting, curtain and information panels.  There's a lot of green!

Late on Sunday afternoon there were some interesting light effects due to sunlight (haven't seen that for ages) streaming through the windows.  A view from the river Test towards Southampton...

Seems to be a fair bit of activity on the wharf and around the creosote treatment plant...

It's been nearly a year since the Romsey show, which was the very last show before Covid restrictions set in, and naturally not a lot has been done on Redbridge Wharf since. Having looked up this thread to share something else, I realise I forgot to share some footage taken at Romsey, running in 1967 mode:

Furthermore, the weekend just gone was the Twitter model show, and I have compiled some videos I shared running the layout in 1990s Network SouthEast mode. We've lots still to do scenically for Redbridge, first and foremost a good tidy up and repair of various bits that were damaged from the Romsey show.

We also aim to have some scenic elements like lampposts changeable to facilitate more modern running sessions. With the vaccine rollout continuing hopefully it won't be too long before club nights can resume and progress can be made on Redbridge. The layout remains available for exhibition in 2022.

We've been rather remiss in keeping this thread up to date.  Redbridge Wharf finally got back on the exhibition circuit this year after the 2 year hiatus caused by the pandemic.  Earlier this year we took the layout to Ally Pally and a busy time was had by all.  Next month we will be at the Warley exhibition at the NEC.

As a warm up for the "big one" we were at the Farnham club's exhibition this weekend and a jolly good show it was with a good selection of great layouts.  We were very pleased to be awarded the "Most Appealing Layout" award based on votes from the public. Thank you all who voted for us.  We had a great weekend and were very well looked after.

What a wonderful video! Makes our model track laying seem a doddle by comparison. Did not know how accuracy over long measured dimensions was established and, more importantly, fixed so that it could be recovered at the actual site of works. So I learnt a lot from this video. Thank you for posting.

Long time no update, and a difficult end to 2023 for us with the loss of our clubroom, but some good news for 2024 is that we are in the March edition of Hornby mag!

IMG-20240131-WA0010.jpg.821e244b1aa518340db734d5ddc3d718.jpg

We enjoyed two shows in 2023 - New Milton in July and Tolworth in November.

20230728_182405.jpg.033dce0474b394e58d86755a419321f1.jpg

Unfortunately at New Milton we encountered a major problem with the route setting software and control system, which somewhat hampered our route setting availability. Luckily we could still put on a show, and again at Tolworth we operated in 'degraded mode', although the public were none the wiser.

20231111_132429.jpg.7fc75545294b0b4676dc2a7cf4b00988.jpg

Following pack down at Tolworth we set the layout up the next day in our local village hall for Hornby mag to do the shoot, and the results are out now.

Our next show is in 4 weeks at the start of March in Abingdon, and fingers crossed after much pulling of hair by our IT experts we hope to be back to full operating capability!

We have two further shows booked in the Autumn which are to be confirmed, but in the meantime the hunt continues for a new clubroom in the south Hampshire area.

20231112_102619.jpg.f9cf4bcc1d4a1ca5093a562a79921c5a.jpg

We are still very proud of the layout which is now in its third magazine and has attended 8 shows, with more to come. We very much enjoy engaging with the public and have met many people who have some affiliation with the location, be that ex-workers or rail staff who love to tell their tale, people who remember travelling during the end of steam or on newly introduced Thumper DEMUs and 4-REP EMUs, and locals who just recognise the area and want to tell us they've driven over that road bridge in real life! There's always a discussion to be had so please do say hello if you see us at a future show.

I have to say this is one of my favourite layouts.

The reason I have quoted this particular image is due to the road bridge at the back, because I have an amusing tale to tell about it. Back in the 1960’s our family had spent the day enjoying a picnic in the New Forest. Somehow, and I can’t remember the circumstances, father fell into a stream and consequently his trousers were soaking wet. There wasn’t time to dry them before we had to travel home so father left them off for the drive home. Unfortunately our car (cream morris minor) decided to breakdown mid way across that very bridge. With the picnic rug wrapped around his waist dad got out to sort the problem, much to the amusement of passing motorists and the abject embarrassment of our mother.

Never mind the old joke about a bus sat on a bridge, I will never be able to look at it again without the memory flooding back. I might even engineer a similar scene on my layout!
