Waverley Route Signal Boxes

What's puzzling me is the 'UP GDS BCH DOWN' line nearest the camera, and what look like staggered platforms? Is this a post-rationalisation St Boswells South box and I'm falling prey to optical illusions? That would mean UP GDS BCH DOWN is the Kelso branch, by then freight only.

Other than that I'm stumped. Too much track for any of the wayside stations. And what's that branch?

A shameless bounce for Bruce's 'Boxmaster' Quiz, and an opportunity to share another lesser seen SB.

Now, another question this time requiring local dialect knowledge: how do we correctly pronounce this place, should it rhyme with 'Roland,' or is it 'Bough-land' in the same way that Stow's not the same as in 'stowaway,' but as in 'stout.'

As in propelling a rowing boat: to rhyme with Roland.

Would you believe that there was someone in my primary class at school in Hawick whose family took the train to Bowland station to visit relatives?

Local pronunciation is a nightmare and I'm not going to get (too) involved.

Also local names, I was at a meeting in Edinburgh recently and used "The Holm" instead of "Newcastleton" to be met by a blank look. (Also "Copshaw", or "Copshaw Holm" or the one I smile at, courtesy of our daughter who had several Copshaw mates in her class at school, "The Zone".) These names are all interchangeable in everyday speech round here. Sorry, this is a bit off-topic.

Hahahahaha!!!

The Zone, well that's certainly true of where Dave and I find ourselves on a habitual basis, figuratively and literally I guess

Return to Bowland, the track THE CLASH never recorded but should've. That's an incredibly rare find, someone to have used that obscure - even in WR company - station.

Bowland is the only place on the Waverley where I have ever seen a photo of a WD 2-8-0 in action (1948, and bearing the no. 63038-ex NE!)

It's not Fountainhall box is it?

Dave.

Too much going on I reckon, I'm for St Boswells still, with Kelso freight only.

We need to bell through to Langholm for closure ;)

Could it be Melrose? It's got to be somewhere that had track circuits hence the indicator board

I am currently building a small N Gauge model based on Whitrope Siding in the late 1950's early 60's period.

I am going to be limited to the structures I can include due to size limitations, but will need to constuct a model of the signal box and ancilliary buildings that surround it (not the Cottages though, sadly they would be off-scene to the front of the layout).

I have, thanks to WHRA's website a good plan of the site, plus I have located a number of pics of the box itself from the Web and books in my possession, though I could do with more. However if anyone can point me in the direction of any drawings of the box, or indeed any useful photos of the location and surrounds it would be really helpful.

I am on a bit of a tight timescale, having committed to having it ready for our Club's Exhibition at Berkhamseted on October the 8th, so anything anyone might be able to do to help me speed up the process would be very much appreciated.

You'll need to include the snow fence opposite the box which was a signature feature along with culvert 199 close by. There are no other significant structures on that side, but you'll need an effective representation of the bare hillside.

All the man made stuff is on the front of your layout including the pole route.

I assume your scenic breaks are Whitrope Tunnel and Occupation bridge 201 at the head of Ninestanerig Cutting?

Dave.

Roy - if you send me a message with your email address I'll send you some bits that you may find useful. I'm guessing the plan you have is the one I drew, at http://www.wrha.org....siding_plan.jpg

I have also drawn all 4 sides of the signalbox, ready for an architect to complete plans, and it includes every single brick (yep, all counted!) if it's any use?

Brilliant!

I will e-mail you off list!

Many thanks!

Roy

HI Dave

The snow-fence is an interesting feature, which I am contemplating the most effective way to recreate, but as space is limited much of the bleakness of the hillside will need to be recreated on the backscene.

The culvert is understandably (as it would probably not be something most would photograph with all those lovely locos around!) something I only have clarity as regards the top part of, again any information would be gratefully received.

The layout will be somewhat compressed, as it will only be 7ft in length overall, but Whitrope Tunnel will form one scenic break, the other may have to be no more than a "hole in the sky".

Regards

As my Whitrope Siding layout gets close to completion, here are a couple of pics of my attemp at Whitrope Siding Signal Box before it is fixed in position. It is not perfect, the more I look the more I see, but it is pretty accurate in overall dimensions and I am reasonably happy with it.

I should add a big "Thank you" to Matt for all the information he generously provided me.

Very tasty.

Look forward to seeing you and the box next Saturday at Tadrail.

Bernard

Hi Bernard

Thank you. The box is now fixed in situ on the layout, which is pretty much finished.

All that remains is to fit the drape round the front and then figure a simple way to crate it for safe transport.

I look forward to meeting you on Saturday.

Don't know if you'd be interested but Scalescenes do a printable sheet of station name board which allows you to configure the name you want printed.

Really nice item and only a few pounds from memory, and can be printed as many times as you like with as many different names.

I used them in N gauge and it worked quite nicely

That would have been very useful but typically I printed the two Box nameboards in font 3 on white photographic quality paper, cut them out and stuck them on just last night before fixing the box down! They actually look reasonably convincing.

Hey-ho, never mind, there's always next time (Riccarton Junction one day hopefully!).

I have just come across a collection of hand drawn signal panel diagrams while on a trawl through Flickr. While they are not directly related to this thread, they seem to fit quite well and should give anyone wanting to model the locations or boxes a good heads up, as well as being generally interesting!

From north to south:-

Selkirk Junction: Selkirk Junction.

Ravenswood Juction: RavensWood Jcn.

St Boswells North: St Boswells North.

Hawick North: Hawick North

Shankend: Shankend

Whitrope: Whitrope Sidings.

Riccarton North: Riccarton North

Riccarton South: Riccarton South

Steele Road: Steele Road

Newcastleton: Newcastleton

Similarly, the Signal Box website has many of John Hinson's 'box diagrams for the Waverley Route, the search box is here: http://www.signalbox.org/diagrams.php

...including, but not limited to:

Hawick North http://www.signalbox.org/diagrams.php?id=488

Hawick South http://www.signalbox.org/diagrams.php?id=532

Borthwick Bank http://www.signalbox.org/diagrams.php?id=517

Riccarton North http://www.signalbox.org/diagrams.php?id=515

Shankend http://www.signalbox.org/diagrams.php?id=362

... and a most impressive Galashiels http://www.signalbox.org/diagrams.php?id=363 which is worthy of hanging on a wall!

More there, just a search away!

For those interested in the signalling aspect of the Waverley Route there's a decent thread about it at http://www.signalbox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1293

Chris, that last one, combined with a photo in the Bradford Barton Waverley Steam volume has just closed one of a certain person's most-wanted! Cheers!
