Decoder Pro 3 help - and now a successful Touchcab user.

Recommended Posts

Bob,

glad its working,  I thought it may work "out of box" due to the defaults described in the manual, but one can never be certain.

I'd expect the setup CD won't be a lot of use.  It will be assuming a "normal access the internet setup" which isn't quite what you have.   If you ever need to make changes (shouldn't need to as far as I can see), then connect your PC to one of the four ethernet connections, and use a browser to connect to the router's control panel (may require reading manual for router).

Hi Bob

Excellent news. Since I got TouchCab last year I haven't used either my Lenz LH100 or Multimaus throttles. You will also be able to connect the laptop to the interface and program your locos wirelessly using DecoderPro.

Have fun.

Cheers

Paul

Hi Nigel....Hi Paul,

I cant tell you how much I appreciate your help on this topic......without such help and encouragement I would have dropped by the wayside long ago.

I have just returned from the loft after seeing my pals off, and I have had a great evening with Touchcab, which is now my 3 rd controller besides the 2 x LH100's.

I shall make sure and thank you personally when we next meet...perhaps LYDCC in Manchester in May.?

Cheers Guys.

Bob.

Having now got used the iPhones Touchcab operation....I find it so much easier and quicker to use than a normal LH100 controller.

Swapping between locos is so much quicker....throttling up and down is the same, very quick, very accurate.

Locos on the list easier to recognise by name or their full number, or bit of both, rather than just 4 digits as with the LH100.

Where has this controller been all my life...!!!!   Its fantastic.....I can see my standard throttles being made redundant, and some second hand ipod touches sought.

I can see what you mean Paul when you say you use nothing else but Touchcab these days.

Heeeeellllllllllppppppp mmmmeeeeeeeeee PLEASE !

I have had an awful week and thought I would chill with a rare weekend of trains having committed to a show later this year and wanting to play with my Christmas present.

Santa brought me a Lenz 23151 and I refurbished an old XP laptop with JMRI to utilise Decoder Pro and I also downloaded Touchcab to mu iPhone 4S.

With our old BT Homehub removed from retirement and all of the manuals and forum posts read I was raring to go.

Sadly what has followed was two days of utter frustration . . . . . . .

I wired the router to the 23151 to the Lenz base station and got nothing - I have the IP address issue of the phone refusing to find the router - phone sits on 192.168.1.42 and refuses to search or connect.

The router (via phone) says :

I P Address . . . . 192.168.1.70

Subnet Mask . . . 255.255.255.0

Router . . . . . . . . 192.168.1.254

DNS . . . . . . . . . . 192.168.1.254

With the 23151 connected to the laptop and the router and the base station the I can use the laptop throttle supplied with the installation disc but nothing else - WiThrottle Lite won't run off my iPad with this configuration either.

I am stumped, really stumped and would appreciate any help at all to get me up and running - I have no idea of the IP address for the 23151 as I cannot see how to interrogate it.

Hi Karl,

It seems you have run against the same problems I was experiencing.......even with the help of Nigel and Paul, see posts #60, #61, etc etc, I was still not able to understand the I.T. requirements to change the router I.P. address.

Nigel told me there was a router from Argos with the correct address, cost about £20, that would work.   After several days of trying, I gave up, and went to Argos and shelled out the £20 on this router.

After plugging it in.......then going to settings on my iphone, and clicking on the TP link router..........the IP numbers whizzed around when I switched on Touchcab.......and I was immediatley playing trains.

For £20, to me, it was worth the money to save the hassle.............as I am no I.T. guru.

Sorry I cant be of more help Karl..........but you can see from the posts earlier on this thread, how I too struggled with the IP address issue.

Thanks Bob - it has not been a good week & this topped it off.

I am happy playing with IT if I actually knew what to tweak and how to get to it but I cannot find how to read the 23151!

The £20 router sounds great had it not been for my wife's car blowing the head gasket Thursday just 2 days after my old disco had a turbo failure, as you can appreciate all spare pennies are heading for the car repair fund for the foreseeable future :(

Karl.......I am assuming you are trying to change the settings in your iphone first, to try and connect to the router.??

What I didnt do as was advised in those earlier posts, was connect the 23151 to the router using an ethernet/network cable, in order to change the routers IP address. Now whether that works, or is any help, I dont know.????

You are so close, and I appreciate the frustration you are feeling, same as I did.   I'm sure it wont be long before you sort it, with or without a TP link router.

Keep me informed of your progress.....and if I have any further thoughts I'll get back to you.  If Paul or Nigel are around, I'm sure they might have a suggestion or two that might help you.

Bob.

The BT Homehub would be almost my last choice for this task; too locked down to BT's ISP service.

So Bob's comment about buying something else is where I'd start.

If I've time tomorrow I'll try to dig out some address information to see if the problems can be solved with the Homehub.

Thanks guys - it is a case of "needs must" with the router at the moment.

Will catch up with you tomorrow, 4:00am start for me in the morning so off to bed.

Karl

Have you looked at the forum on the Touchcab website.?

There stories of other people having the same problem.

For example. http://www.touchcab.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=443

Right,  here we go...

The Lenz manual (and this thread) says the default IP address in the Lenz box is 192.168.0.200 It is also a static address, meaning it is set in the device and doesn't automatically find a new address.  There are good reasons to keep it static.  The third number (zero) is important.

The IP address from a Home-Hub, by default, is 192.168.1.254.     Again, the third number (one) is important - its different to that used by the Lenz, so the address ranges are different, and thus incompatible at present.

So, need to either change the address in the Lenz or change the range of addresses issued by the Home-Hub.   As to which, depends on what you find the easiest;  it also requires that you are able to connect to one of them to make the changes.   I've not found any explicit instructions for changing the address range on the HomeHub, but I'd guess it is possible from the admin screens.    So, pick one or the other but not both(!) of these two options:

1 - Change address of Lenz unit

See the Lenz manuals,  you need to connect a PC directly to the Lenz with a "cross-over" Ethernet cable (This has some of the pins crossed over compared to a normal ethernet cable.  If you lack such a cable, forget this option.   You can experiment with various cables, if you get the connection to the browser, then great its working).  Connect to the Lenz devices webserver by opening your browser onto http://192.168.0.200     You need to change the address of the Lenz unit to 192.168.1.200  AND the default gateway to 192.168.1.254      Once the addresses are changed, you would then connect to the new address on the Lenz unit, the old address will now fail (obviously??).

2 - Change the address of the BT HomeHub.    You need to change the HomeHub so that it's own address is 192.168.0.254, and the corresponding gateway should come automatically.   This page has clues as to how to do it, but not a full set of instructions:

http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9011/~/how-do-i-change-the-dhcp-settings-of-the-bt-home-hub%3F

Once both the HomeHub and the Lenz unit have the same address ranges, you should be most of the way there.   Strictly speaking the static address used by the Lenz should be declared as static on the HomeHub (or at least the dynamically allocated addresses restricted so that 192.168.0.200 isn't issued as dynamic), but that shouldn't be an issue in practise.

Don't forget the ensure that the wireless channel used by the new router is different to your other router, at least 3 channels away is the usual advice.

Also remember to configure the security to stop the neighbours playing with your trains

Okay - 12 hour shift over and a nap to refresh the little grey cells.

That is an impressive set of instructions Nigel, many thanks! On balance I need to attempt this whilst not sleep deprived so will pop on hold until later in the week and update everyone accordingly.

It's all a bit fiddly but I am sure I will get there.

Another frustrating and fruitless session has now ended - Nigel was spot on about the BTHomeHub, it is locked up tighter than a ducks dooberry and all attempts to change the IP address have failed. In desperation a call was made to a friend of a friend who is a BT iT specialist and he said "don't bother, it's a nightmare" but thankfully he has a spare old basic router which I am getting Sunday.

If all else fails he is also furnishing a twisted Ethernet cable in case I need to change the 23151 which I really hope I don't.

In the meantime I am having immense fun playing with my shunting puzzle every evening when I get in from work - this is such a great hobby for unwinding after a long & tricky day.

Probably handy to have the crossover cable "just in case" but I used a normal ethernet cable after being told that the 23151 was "auto sensing" although the manual does say you need a crossover.

Hi

I had no problem changing the IP address of my parents BTHomeHub.

Cheers

Paul
