The human side of the railway...

Somebody mention Bodmin?!!

Yes time for some childish (and some of the more atmospheric) pictures of staff.
Most are taken around 2010 onwards. Few from the facebook albums etc

47306 running around at Bodmin Parkway (formally Bodmin Road)
Younger members of staff having a cab ride with the usual diesel crew. Oliver and Ben are seen leaning out the cab window and door.

Myself having just changed the points.

A rare sight the public never see since this is the end of the day with the station cleared and closed.
Tony emptying the ash from the smoke box of 4612. Tony was a fireman on the original Bodmin/Wenfordbridge/wadebridge lines and was often seen on the beattie well tanks (so if you see a old photograph etc)

Myself changing the points at Boscarne Junction.
Wearing the vintage BR uniform, note sleeves are bit too short for my long arms (I don't think these uniforms were made for Cornish railway staff in mind)

These are mobile phone shots, so quality not very good but I think the photos make a point:

This is Elsinore station, it's late Sunday afternoon today, and it's raining cats and dogs. All the grumpy commuters are relaxing in their comfy sofas. Meanwhile, someone is out there in the rain, making sure the trains will run on time.

(I hasten to add that I'm just one of the commuters, though rarely grumpy!)

Could simply be that it's be altered to suit its original owner; I've had jacket sleeves shortened by an inch or so so it doesn't have the "you'll grow into it" look!

That's the "One Size - Fits Nobody" version

I was always told that if your uniform fitted you without alteration, then you must be abnormal!

When I passed through Manchester the other week I was pleased to see that the old railwayman's tradition of making any uniform, no matter how neat or posh, look like it was a sack of spuds still applies. :smile_mini2:

This may be due to the fact that the people who make the uniform think they are making a sack for spuds.

Manchester Victoria, 20 August 1999.

Driver Roy Smith, ex Springs Branch, Southport, loco instructor / inspector and finally a manager on Merseyrail. After retiring returned to driving for a private company. When in the cab as a loco inspector would always want to drive the train, he would drive a herd of cattle if he could. A true gentleman and railwayman , sadly no longer with us.
