The human side of the railway...

Four views all at the same spot at Newcastle.

The b&w shots may have been uploaded before, a couple of years ago?

Nidge are you very sure that is Reading General?  I think my pocket money is a lot more likely to be placed on it being Wrexham General.

Pretty sure yes Mike - it looks to me like the County is in the old platform 8, west end, the other loco is on the up relief just beyond platform 9.

I've uploaded this one before, a year or two ago, but this talk of Reading in the last couple of posts reminded me I took this in the same spot(?) The trackwork matches.

I can understand that conclusion Nidge but then I look at several features -

1.  The tubular post signal applyting to that platform is nothing like the one on (old) Platform 8 at Reading which was not only shorter but also had a subsidiary arm below it.

2.  At that angle of view the C&W Examiners cabin just beyond that signal would be just in view  - it isn't.

3.  Theres an FPL cover on the line coming through the crossover from behind the engine - there never was one in that position at Reading (but there was at Wrexham South).

4.  The next line over has got an ATC ramp in the four foot - at Reading that light was the spur end of the middle siding so there was no ATC ramp (but that ramp position fits for Wrexham South).

5.  The mogul looks to be stationary on what would be the Up Relief at Reading (it was a siding at Wrexham South).

6.  the horse boxes are standing on what would have been the Up relief Siding at Reading but where they are would have put them past the stop block (it was a double ended siding at Wrexham South),

and

7.  The bracketed signal S structure with a lower arm distant is nothing like what was at Reading where it was a tall straight post signal which would have been more nearer to the viewpoint on the right and not in that position at all (but it exactly matches the position of a bracketed signal with alower arm distant at Wrexham South which also puts the ATC ramp in the right place in relation to the signal).

8.  Of slightly lesser importance - 1016 was a Stafford Road or Salop engine while in that livery

Now look at my picture taken from the west end of Platform 8 in 1964 albeit with a different angle of view see in particular the signal plus the hose drying tower at the fire station in the background. The pic you posted definitely isn't Reading and my money remains on Wrexham.

That's the west end of Platform 5 - the Down Main Line not the Down Relief.  The semaphore signal there was much taller than the one in the pic posted by Nidge and that crossover wasn't there in pre MAS days nor was there a large bracketed signal over to the right while the ATC ramp on the next line over was much further east.

OK, so my view must be a red herring. Sorry for any confusion.

Bit of an echo in here.:P (Just report to mods and hide extra posts.)

It took for ever to upload and didn't appear. Then I got one of those curious repeats of my text in an otherwise empty box. So I uploaded it with the photos again and it took so long to upload, that I got called away and the computer had shut itself down by the time I returned. Thanks for pointing out the duplication.

I posted this photo of Old Oak Driver Jackie Brown not long back but some interesting info has just come to light thanks to a fellow ex-Old Oak man on another forum - Jackie was the driver aboard D1015 'Western Champion' when it worked the 1Z00 16.20 empty stock of Sir Winston Churchill's funeral train from Hanborough back to Paddington on 30th January 1965. His secondman that day was Les Eltringham and the Traction Inspector for the trip was Bill Andress, their day started with them using D1015 coupled to D1028 'Western Hussar' (in maroon livery and manned by an Old Oak crew) going light engine from Old Oak to Reading where D1028 was left as the standby loco for the day. They then went light to Hanborough to work the Empty stock back to Padd...

From our local facebook group (it does have its uses!) c/o Mark McCluskey : outside Rugby Midland station on the morning of the train robbery, 8th August 1963, a group of pupils from St.Maries Roman Catholic School gather together before a trip to Ireland... note the Blue Pullman poster on the wall... the robbery occurred down at Sears Crossing between Leighton Buzzard and Cheddington just after 3am, so this would've been taken only a four or five hours later...

Photo by Mick Barstow : Kings X driver Charlie Ward at Doncaster relieving the 4E35 Bathgate - Dagenham cartics on 3rd March 1973, no doubt keen to get home and watch 'Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads' on his rented Redifusion colour TV (if the power is on), whilst in the top 40 that week were Slade with ' On Feel The Noize', T-Rex with '20th Century Boy', The Sweet with 'Blockbuster', Roberta Flack with 'Killing Me Softly With His Song', Thin Lizzy with 'Whisky In The Jar' and Stevie Wonder with 'Superstition'...

if it’s Reading General, shouldn’t there be a road underbridge girder visible to the right of the platform 8 line just after the point leading to the centre road? Or was that bridge put in later?

Token exchange on the single-line Grain branch, signal NK509 near Cliffe, today's Grain-Colnbrook aviation fuel:

Looks a pleasant day, but the wind wasn't half whipping across the marshes.

Also, not everything on your layout has to be vertical.

And the track dose not have to be level and stright.

Ah. my favourite station! I always walked through there on my way to work and was always late on Mondays: the 9.0 Exchange - Glasgow would have a Black Five on the front. Then one week in April 1968, I think it was, there was an epidemic among the Class 40s and the Black Five was there every day. I was in a bit of trouble by Friday.
