Not the most technically accomplished of images but a few shots of spotters with their 'prey' - I wonder how many of the younger element kept up their interest in railways?

That shot around the Derby Type 2 reminds me of a visit to Eastleigh Open Day, mid-70s, which I have mentioned before. A Class 74 suddenly burst into life, and a startled kid emerged rapidly from the cab declaring "I never touched nuffink!"

On the left is the now late Labour M.P. for Hull North, Kevin McNamara. He held that post from 1966 to 2005, 39 years.

The photo was taken at Hull Paragon.

My penfriends dad, the late, great Charlie Hess engineer on the New York & Long Branch of the Penn Central. The in cab picture I took in the cab of an E9 on a commuter run to  NY we also rode a GG1 but I didn't take any pictures of that ! Muppet!  The steam loco he is stood in front of is a K4 pacific  at the Bay Head terminus yard  in the early 50's

  A really great guy I miss him.279576845_CharlieHess2.jpg.3e6e0dee829c0af189c182ae9f58eb20.jpg606566513_CharlieHess3.jpg.2f9903a24db6f447c9c03b19b626c454.jpg

Yes it is a CNJ 4-6-0 Camelback, Bay  Head yd; was a PRR/CNJ facility. A balloon loop with a number of holding  roads for complete trains. Its still there. No shed or coal facilities just water, steam and diesel came off at South Amboy and trains ran into Penn Sta under the wires.

I think the CNJ ran to the ferry terminal at Nth Elizabeth, cant remember the sta; name.

From Moorthorpe at the end of 2019, a tale of photographers' woe...

As the loco takes on water, the crowds gather, picking the best spot for a photo:

The points change, there's a whistle, and a cloud of steam:K50P5976.jpg.6ab00119ffa858a9fa50f130e2cd916e.jpg

Some people realise their photo is in doubt, and start to run down the platform, glancing back anxiously:

But the excess steam lasts the entire length of the platform:

Atmospheric, at least.

Never mind that, did you get the number of the Pacer?

Number? Do they have numbers then? I always thought they had names like Percy, Peter or Penelope the Pacer. Or is that just the ones with a face on the front?

More seriously, how does the driver manage to see the signal at the N end of Moorthorpe platforms with a cloud like that?

Perhaps the exit signal from the loop was already green, or would that only clear if the platform-end signal is also clear, as the distance between the two isn't that far?

Pacers have a lot of names, few of them repeatable.

The driver will already have seen the platform signal Off so can carry on. If he hasn't seen it he will shut off steam in time to see and act on it. He knows where it is; he's signed the road to say he knows.

Hi There,

The TPWS will give indication of clear or danger as would be the case in foggy conditions.

Gibbo.
