Seems BR had a few celebrity drivers back then that the US would have frowned upon,  there is a picture on here I think of a fidel castro double driving a 76

What an evocative image! I wonder if the driver was being interviewed or perhaps the cassette recorder would be used to tape the sound of the Deltic. And nice to see comedian Harry Hill (when he still had hair) on the right, binoculars round his neck, tabs and matches in his pocket. Any ideas what that is sticking out of the permed gentleman’s back pocket?

Might it be a pager?

Seating capacity for two units was 708.  Peak period trains could be full and standing from St. Albans.

That photograph starkly demonstrates overcrowding of peak time workings into London!

A pair of 4SUBs arriving on a peak hour at Waterloo could easily disgorge upwards of a thousand...

Indeed.  And a crush loaded 12VEP in original form with the large brake van area probably well over 1500.

I wasn't really sure where to post these but thought they might as well go in here as anywhere else since there is some human activity involved - two references to the derailment near Winchcombe that put paid to the Stratford - Cheltenham line as a through route in August 1976....

Amazing pic Nidge @Rugd1022

And a lot of people (BR included) would have you thinking 1975 was bang in the modern Corporate Identity era where everything was straight out of the Design Manual.

It's not as if Knebworth was an end-of-the-line rural backwater and it still has Grouping-era(?) gas lamps and 1950/60s Totem signs.

BTW have always meant to say 'thank you very much' to you and your contacts for your amazing pics - They seem to be staff taking pics of staff with a very keen eye for what makes a great 'human interest' shot - always a nice view of what was an everyday but otherwise 'boring' thing that most people would miss. It's these sort of uncommonly common events that are so interesting.

Thanks Keefer for the kind words - I'm frankly amazed that the thread has lasted so long, I thought it might fizzle out after a few pages but everyone who has contributed has made it worthwhile, so a belated thanks to everyone who has posted in here over the last nine years! Obviously, some of my content consists of found images but I think it's well worth sharing them, and I always try to give credit where the original photographer is known.

This rather nice example is one of Andy Sparks, and appears in one of his excellent books on the BR blue period....

I'm not sure if I've posted this one before, quite possibly but anyway, my brother posted it elsewhere and tagged me in and made me realise it was taken seventeen years ago - we'd just applied the new BR Tips style numbers, data panel and shed sticker on 37 003 at Leeming Bar back in October 2004 and posed for a quick snapshot before taking on a test run to Redmire and back.... I dug out one of my old BR secondman's jacket for the occasion....
