Just a comment re the diesel gala - I was there on Saturday and had a great day with my son, aged 6. From the pictures in the timetable I got him to pick out the locos he wanted to ride behind and from that we worked out the best turns - kept him interested all day and I enjoyed max haulage!

Thanks to all those who made it happen, and nice to have sun shining down, the autumn leaves on the trees and the sight and sound of decent traction.

cheers,

Keith

I've already posted some shots from last Friday in other threads but thought I'd post some different ones here. I wasn't there the whole day but did the last round trip behind the Warship - most enjoyable..!

I visited Bridgnorth yesterday and the yard had the air of a large Great Western shed about it. It is not that often that the ranks aren't infiltrated by 'foreign interlopers'!

Seen from l-r are 7812 Erlestoke Manor, 4566, 5643 (soon to leave the line) and 5164. Out of shot to the right is 4930 Hagley Hall and behind the line up was 4936 Kinlet Hall and 2857. More images available if anyone wishes.

Regards,

Andy.

5164 is really just the standby engine now as her boiler certificate ends in January next year, Hagley has just started on her restoration which at the moment is expected to take 3 years. I've not been able to work yet at Arley this Christmas so don't know whether Kinlet has been in use.

Hope you enjoy your visit next weekend

The shed yard at Bridgnorth was a bit of a BR(W) tank-fest this morning with Spring Gala visitors 6435 and 1638 joining resident 1450, 4566 and 1501 (hidden behind Sir Keith Park). The Small Prairie (seen to the right) looked resplendent in it's new coat of black and will be sure to feature in next months magazines.

Next weekends gala looks set to be a Western themed classic with 7828 also on the roster.

Andy.

Those nice chaps at Bridgnorth had moved 4566 out into the sunshine this afternoon so I was able to grab a shot of her sparkling like a shiny new penny. In fact the ex-works sheen was too much for my taste, but I'm sure it won't last for too long.

Being the last locomotive to be outshopped from Newton Abbot Works in July 1960, I do have a soft spot for this loco and would love to see her in late crest lined green again one day.

Regards,

Andy.

I am sure it will be just a trick of the eye. The old paint was looking a bit tired so its nice to see the old girl in a different livery. Put her on 6 and she romps away.

I think the weekend should be good with 2 separate auto trains out during the day and other unusual pairings. Hopefully the weather will be kind and not the rain currently forecast.

Spent a fantastic day on Friday at the Spring Steam Gala, which was certainly in contrast to the near snowed-out event this time last year!

The day began at 08:30 with a spirited trip down the valley behind 1638 hauling a two coach non-stopper to Bewdley. For me the stand out performer was 4936 Kinlet Hall whose performance and sound was immense, and the full line trips after dark behind both Manors and 1450/1638 was a special experience. The whole railway takes on a new aura at night with the glow from the footplates and dimly lit stations.

In all I managed twelve trips behind nine different locomotives including three double headers and two autotrains!

I can only congratulate all the crews and staff of the SVR for a stunning event that ran like clockwork and hope the rest of the weekend follows suit. It is already in the diary for next year.

Glad you enjoyed the night run last night back to Bridgnorth with 1450 and 1638, it was certainly more fun that the run down. At least I knew about the steam brake setter sticking by then so was able to pre empt it by dropping the res. We were never short of steam or water. The most unusual part was when 1638 primed approaching Arley and when its driver opened the taps, our cab was totally filled with steam meaning we could not see a thing!

Nice pictures and glad you enjoyed the day.

Hi Duncan,

Thanks for your insight, were you on the footplate of 1450 all day?

Those night runs were a magical conclusion to a brilliant day. The sound must have carried on the still night air for miles. It really brought home to me the remarkable skills of steam footplate crews, no high intensity headlights or creature comforts in sight. I however enjoyed it all from the cosy warmth of a steam heated carriage, another once common experience that had dimmed in the memory!

Regards,

Andy.

No sadly I did not get a run with it in auto mode on Friday, although I had a go in that mode the week before, excellent fun. Its got a quiet exhaust so hearing it above that of the other pannier was interesting. You get used to just keeping your head out of the cab for your night vision, even if it is a bit cold, my mate had a head torch so I had to be carefull.

That you enjoyed a heated carriage must have meant the effect in the coaches was greater than the 15psi showing on our gauge.

Regards

Duncan

I went yesterday and had a brilliant day. Got Sir Keith Park on the first trip out of Bridgnorth through to Kidderminster and then back to Highley. Caught it back to Kidderminster on next trip after a visit to the engine house. Then did a full line trip on the return, last train of the day. Ivatt 4 and Erlestoke Manor also in service.
