For me Standard 4s are the same as Standard 5s, Castles and Jubilees  - the proportions are just spot on! Cracking loco 75069, I have a share certificate somewhere....great to see her back.

Whats next in to works?

Currently in the works are the Stanier Crab and the Hall, along with Dunrobin and the Manning Wardle. About to go inside is 82045, although that's for the owning group to complete. I'm not sure that anything else will be going in until 13268 is finished.

Sadly missed out on the big weekend with 75069 as I was working and also had a social event too in Birmingham last night. Headed down to Bewdley today instead to spend sometime with 813. Was also great to see the excellent work that is done by SVR's wagon department and in this case, GWR Fruit Van 2303 (awaiting an opportunity to photograph properly) and SECR Open 12522. Will look great once the SECR lettering goes on :)

2968 - another great loco with a solid SVR pedigree - will be good to see her back again

Gone are the days when 4 or 5 locos a year came out of works!

Phil

Gone are the days when lots of engines had active groups all being restored from Barry condition and to a degree still living off BR repairs. When you consider most of the boiler and firebox are new with 75069 alone.

Absolutely - what has this overhaul cost ? £900k isnt it? if you look back at her demise in service at the end of her last boiler certificate it was plain that the boiler was an achilles heel.

There was a feeling back in the 70s that after the initial overhaul subsequent rebuilds would be less onerous....seems we are heading in the opposite direction, but theres no shying away from the big tasks to get a loco back in to traffic. Repairs are being completed now on problems that would have resulted in an instant one way ticket to the scrappie in the 60s - but at significant cost.

That's the trouble with boilers, they tend to wear out whether you use them or not, it's down to thermal cycling. You tend to get more use out of them if you can keep them just below full working pressure and at a constant temperature for hours on end, it's easier with marine type boilers than locomotive type boilers as the heat is better spread.

My 8yr son and I have just had a fantastic half term visit to the railway. What a superb line. Great facilities and stunning atmosphere. I really liked the way every station felt like stepping back in time, from the urban big town station at Kidderminster through the country junction of Bewdley to the little rural branch line stations. All the staff/volunteers we met were very friendly and helpful.

Two things that I really liked, viewing it as a family trip rather than as an enthusiast, we’re that there was plenty of parking and seats on the train, despite being obviously busy. Leisure activities are meant to be relaxing, not more stressful than the daily commute. MrsJ won’t go back to one line because we had to arrive ridiculously early to get parked,  and then spent the journey standing in the guards van. I feel confident she’d enjoy a visit to SVR.

Already planning a repeat trip for when it’s warmer and we can spend a bit more time outside watching and photographing the trains. Can any of the locals or regulars recommend somewhere to stay if we make a couple of days of it? Preferably in Bewdley or Bridgnorth so we can come by train (the M1, M42 were the less pleasant buts if the trip!). I get the impression Kidderminster is less of a tourist destination.....

I had a great day on the SVR today and will be coming back on Saturday following a Travelling Ticket Inspector duty on the Mid Hants Railway tomorrow. Travelled behind all three steam engines (7714, 34027 & 2857) that were in action but only took a photo of 2857 on arrival at Kidderminster at the end of the day.

There's the Severn Valley Guest House at Bewdley, which is directly beneath Wribbenhall viaduct. There's also The Ship Inn at Highley, they do accommodation and very good food, though on occasions a bit noisy. Failing all that, there's a Travelodge and a Premier Inn in Kidderminster.

In Bewdley too there is The George, a Wetherspoons pub, that does accommodation:

In August last year I had a chance to ride the inspection coach, with a nice strawberry and cream tea laid on.

Now that's what train travel should always be like!

A brief visit to Kidderminster Station today... whilst seeing 813 after having her duties on the SVR Limited and also seeing 48773, I was mainly here to see the latest arrival to the Valley's excellent GWR wagon fleet. The newest arrival comes from Tysley and is GWR CC3 Tool Van 14984 built in 1902 and is now the ownership of Kidderminster Railway Museum.

Here is the "How many people can you squeeze into an auto-trailer?" event this morning. Especially challenging when you consider that almost all the seats were already occupied by people who had boarded at Bewdley and who didn't get off...  Perhaps not the best idea to have a one-coach train as the first departure from Kidderminster on a gala day?!

And so another spectacular SVR Spring Gala has come to a close. I've enjoyed all three days and everything that has come with it. All four visitors along with our residing locos have done an outstanding job despite the minor hiccups. Lovely to see so many people out and about too and great company too over the Gala.

After the trials & tribulations of Saturday - both weather & operating - Sunday turned out to be an excellent day. Here are a few of mine from Highley.

The Coal Tank departs with the 11.25am local to Kidderminster:

IMG_0013-1800px.JPG.108039253d9ea19329015a0302f4321b.JPG

Panniers 1501 & 7714 arrive with the 11.48am from Bridgnorth. There's an annoying & unavoidable tree branch for this shot - but at least the leaves are still in bud:

the panniers depart:

2857 approaches with the 12.00 departure from Kidderminster. This is the GW toplight rake tailed by the Siphon G & it won't stop at Highley (even tho' the TT describes it as a local train!):

A few hours later the Coal Tank & 813 leave (rather smokily) with the 15.28 departure for Bridgnorth (this too described as a local):

and finally 75069 arrives with the 15.23 from Bridgnorth:

Another highlight of the weekend was the 'Master Neverers' slideshow on Saturday evening at the KRM. Absolutely brilliant!

The reason it was described as a local was because of the restricted amount of seating space, compared to a full-length set. It was belled as a Class A Express Passenger, however, as it didn't stop everywhere.
