To answer your questions yes there were spare engines the 28 at Bewdley and the pig at Bridgnorth, as you may know the Q had some issues and had to be replaced by the 28 and later the pig.

I would be amazed if the driver was really 'thrashing' the engine as it does not fit with the standards we are expected to drive to, although that is not to say it was not putting on a good display, it seemed quite noisy.  There is something so different about gala with engines coming and going at different times and a very different operating atmosphere.

Thursday had a smaller timetable than Friday onwards as well.

What will our 50th year gala be next year, well fingers crossed for 2968 and 4930 for a start, 29 has of course not been out too long, whereas Hagley went out in 1986 before many of our current footplate staff were born!

Once managed to have haulage behind 76079 from Machynellth to Barmouth and back to Shrewsbury. With relatively small wheels acceleration was excellent and no slouch either. Not called Pocket Rocket for nothing - so no surprise 76017 would sound similar I guess

We planned to come up for D1015 today but not sure she was running after coolant leak yesterday, which was first trip out after 3 years in works. Turns out she was.... never mind, weather was foul.

Had a great day at the SVR on Saturday at the Autumn diesel gala--great traction action and lovely scenery along the valley, well done to all concerned me and my son really enjoyed it.

Here's a couple of images from the day, hydraulics at Arley and Hampton Loade:

Paid a morning visit to Bewdley today to do some rolling stock snaps. Was able to get some shots of one of the Valley's new projects GWR Hawksworth Third 2119 and soon to be completed,  Regent Oil 22T Class B Tank Wagon 345. Also paid a visit to the Bewdley Triangle was able to get some updated shots of SR 'Queen Mary' Brake Van 56291, patiently waiting her turn.

Happy New Year Guys......

Hope to post a few images regularly, which may show the changing face of Arley through the year and give an indication of what's going on in one of the most, perhaps lovely areas of the UK...

Have a great 2020....

Regards always Bob

As the work on Falling Sands Viaduct gets underway, here at Arley we saw goods wagons that usually reside at Bewdley shunted down to Arley courtesy of 43106, which provided a welcome bit of 'action' into sidings No.'s 1 and 2..........

During the Bridgnorth to Bewdley operation period, today we saw 75069 in operation, plus 7714 shown here pulling away as we chopped logs....!

Love Arley - both the village and the station. In the warmer months I love to take the grandchildren over there. Feed the ducks, look out for stick man going down the river from the bridge, picnic in the station garden (and see a couple of trains if my timing is right) then back to the car and a little sleep on the way home (the kids not me). A brilliant, simple and very cheap day out. The volunteers that look after Arley station do a wonderful job and I am always amazed at how well the gardens are kept. Very well done to all involved; you have created something special.

I always feel a bit guilty that the above day out is great for me but does nothing to help the SVR. I am a member like to support the SVR by travelling on it and going to events but unfortunately I don't have the spare time to become a volunteer myself.

Cheers for the kind comments Chris, we all strive at Arley to keep the station looking as good and as authentic as we can throughout the year.  This becomes more and more time consuming (as both the infrastructure and ourselves get older and wear out) to maintain...but it's a labour of love for us all.

I've been helping to look after the gardens (and on the maintenance team for 17 years now) and loved every moment I've been just one  member of a fine bunch of volunteer friends based there.

It's great that you enjoy both the station's environs and facilities, you don't have to feel guilty at all my friend, we hope  (indeed as do all volunteers along the whole line) to provide stations and a railway that's open to all, whether travelling or visiting, so by the sound of it we've succeeded with yourself and young family!

It's great to see folks lining the road bridge to watch the loco's passing by or lounging around in the gardens, soaking up the sunshine and tranquility that makes Arley the very special place that it is for many, including us as volunteers, we know we are such a fortunate bunch of guys to be based there.

Thank you once again for your kind comments and support; please ask for me next time you are about at Arley as it would be good to say 'Hello'...

Regards always...

Bob

Hi Guys...

Well we've come to the end of another seasons running and now in a maintenance shutdown period which remains in operation through until mid-February when we recommence a Bridgnorth - Bewdley timetabled operation whilst the work on Falling Sands Viaduct continues through March into April....seems a while off yet but that six weeks will probably seemingly fly by....!

Two loco's in operation today - 75069 and 'Rat Bag'....

IIRC there’s a special gala planned. And hopefully we’ll also have Erlestoke Manor back this year.

Thanks for posting that link Bob. I havent looked for ages - as I hold shares in the Manors and the Standard 4s I tend to focus on them more. This looks like a completely new loco bar frames and wheels! Gone are the days when ex Barry locos could be steamed with a bit of fettling - was it 1974 that 4 locos were restored to traffic? The feeling then seemed to be that getting a loco back in to traffic was the end of problems and subsequent overhauls would be far less onerous....!!!!!! The amount of work going in to 4930 is humbling - hope she can be steamed this year but plainly still a long way to go. And the casting of a new cylinder block for 4930 is a good omen for 7802...

The person who did the cad work for 4930's, had offered some months ago to do the new ones for 02. I seem to remember that it has been said though that 12 will be finished before work starts on 02.
