We visited for the fish and chip special yesterday....a cracking evening out behind 1062....

Train was formed of the LMS rake - ideal!

Thats a mayfly on the drivers window - there was a hatch in process whilst we were at Bridgnorth, heaven knows where they were coming from.

And a final atmospheric view back at Kidder. 1V76? thats a Manchester - Penzance - loco must have come on at Bham New Street!

An evening trip up the Valley is something special. Have done them with the Erlestoke Manor Fund before now....in the evening things are quieter without the teeming stations, the countryside is still. 1062 sounded superb last night and the atmosphere was punctuated by alternate blasts of warm air/exhauast/wild garlic/cold air pockets as we travelled back to Kidder. Looks like the DMUs are hors de combat as diesel locos are rostered all summer.

We will be back for a trip with D821

Highly recommended.

It is indeed wonderful travelling along the valley in the evening. Personally I prefer a diesel loco and coaches rather than a DMU - wouldn’t it be nice if this became a regular fixture?

Whilst we appreciate the loco haulage not all do - there were grumbles from the booked coach party last night that the booked DMU wasnt running....

I spent a very nice day on the SVR yesterday. Spending this evening and tomorrow evening on the Mid Hants Real Ale Train as guard.

Here are two photos I took yesterday. I will have to wait until tomorrow to put two more up due to the limitations now in place.

Hi Guys....

Two views of traffic whilst we were working on laying slabs today for stability beneath the down platform benches and final phase the replacement of the rather troublesome Cotswold chippings.....with Cedec.

and added images of the standard, white wisteria in its full glory, today 'pumping' out its beautiful scent in the warm, brilliant sunshine...these bees 'loved it'...

Hi....

Just a few views for your delectation, of today's traffic that turned my head whilst gardening.....

The 108 is due for repairs,  including a lift at Kidderminster depot for  51941, with the others undergoing repair at the carriage and wagon works. This is expected to commence in the near future. D7029 is currently on the jacks.

Many thanks for that. Certainly not an issue for me - will be back for some more loco haulage later in the year. Hopefully D7029 before too long....

Still quite a bit of work to do on D7029 and I've been told it'll be 3-5 years before it's up and running. This may seem a long time, but the DTG also has D821,D1015 and D8568 to maintain, with D1015 about to have two engines lifted in. Even so, there are DTG people working on D7029 on a regular basis, it's just that the runners take priority. (Plug) I've a book coming out in September (orders open now!) on Kidderminster depot and it features all the aforementioned locos under repair, along with every other SVR diesel and the volunteers that maintain them. Cheers for the heads up. Not surprised re D7029 - the folks that keep these locos running do a fantastic job - and it does look like D7029 is moving along...

Visiting the depot at Kidder is akin to visiting a smaller version of the old Crewe works.....fantastic

Ok. I've got to ask

What was the GBRf 66 and  hoppers doing there.

I saw it heading over  Falling Sands back towards Kiddy and it did look odd with the plough brake hung on the back.

It's often referred to as the Old Oak Common of preservation, due in no small part to the fact that the main building is almost an exact replica of a maintenance shed at said depot. Someone from the SVR diesel department, went down to OOC to measure it up. Yes, D7029 is making steady progress and is currently alongside D1013 and D1015 , well it was a couple of weeks ago. D1013 is, so I'm told, next in line for painting, although this will probably not happen for around another 12 months, as there is still quite a bit of work to do on it, including a lift. One also has to take into consideration the weather conditions for painting, such as making sure it's not too damp or cold. I've photographed D1015,D1062 and 37688 (all in new book!) being painted from stage 1 all the way through to the final coat, and it's fascinating to see the amount of preparation that goes into such tasks, even before the first brush stroke. Watching the painter at work (same chap for all three locos) is like watching an artist transform a blank canvas into a masterpiece.

Yes, 37688 looks stunning!

Indeed. Having seen it transformed from a rather tired looking DRS livery,it's hard to believe it's the same loco! It has had a lot of work done on it too, in terms of having vacuum brakes fitted etc. Painter Mick Flint (who also works at Bridgnorth depot paint shop) takes a lot of pride in his work and it's a pleasure to watch him paint. He used to work at Toton depot, painting EWS locos by hand. He puts in a starring role in my upcoming book on Kidderminster depot! If you ever wondered what is involved in hand painting a loco, or an engine lift etc, this is the book for you!

Although I live within earshot of the SVR it's like anything on the doorstep, you just take it for granted.

I thought it didn't look like your typical ballast drop.

Unfortunately it looks like Bradley Manor has suffered a significant failure on the WSR

Causes yet to be established

All that can be said is if you want to see the damage social media can do to a railway, you don't need to look much further than that thread. I know the EMF will be working hard to get the engine repaired as quickly as possible and will work to identify what caused it. What would not help is lots of speculation.

Many thanks and could not agree more.

Hope the cylinder casting is not lost but am aware that others have been repaired.

People have always gossiped, and always will. The internet allows ill informed misinformation to spread faster and wider than before (and it's impacted things much more significant than a steam train based tourist attraction), but it's essentially the same idea.

I was out working on a different preservation enterprise at the weekend, and I heard all kinds of nonsense about the tragic event on the South Wales main line of a week ago. People just love to speculate.

A statement from the EMF

https://www.facebook.com/ErlestokeManorFund/

For those that won't touch FB.

Quote

"On Sunday 7th July our locomotive 7802 Bradley Manor suffered a broken piston rod whilst working the 10.15 passenger train from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead on the West Somerset Railway.

The WSR dealt with the situation very promptly and recovered the train and failed locomotive to Bishop's Lydeard.

Unfortunately the locomotive has suffered significant consequential damage and has been withdrawn from service for an investigation and further examination prior to repair. It is likely that the locomotive will be out of service for a considerable period.

Bradley Manor is normally based on the Severn Valley Railway but has been on hire to the WSR for this summer season."

This post is purely for information and is not intended as an encouragement to speculate, debate or in any other way start a flurry of unnecessary posts. Further updates will be poted in due course and the Fund would like to thank all those who have sent messages of support at this difficult time.

On a positive note today, Heljan and ModelRail are joining forces to develop the LMS/BR Class Diesel Shunters...!! Of the 15 examples, our SVR resident Class 11 12099 will be released in her NCB orange livery.

Whilst I am looking forward to seeing the NCB livery, I'm going to have to get one of the BR examples renumbered as 12099 instead. 12099 has always been my favourite SVR diesel shunter since I first saw her. This may however open the door to me getting other SVR residents now...!!
