john flann
I bought a new camera and these images in sequential order are a sample of the first trial shots. All were satisfactory;. These on a quick examination appear to be of the better kind. The camera is of the Point and Shoot variety a Canon SX720 HS. I'm pleased with it, easy and comfortable to handle with straightforward instructions. On this sample I'm delighted with the results, just quick shots to see what I could get and over which I took no particular pains. I think it shows promise. Dbr1295
Hello John, Very nice colour definition with these. The images of the boats and their reflections in the water are wonderful. Cheers, Les
RMweb Gold Mikkel Posted March 20, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 20, 2017 Lovely photos and wonderful work, John. The close-ups of 207 and of the boats in particular. Spiritual food on a grey morning!

john flann
My nearest modelling neighbor. John Dew in Vancouver 2,000+ miles westward asked me the other day when there was to be a LM&SR working at Port Bredy. So I thought I'd take the opportunity of a second trial run of the new camera, and caught the 1F out for a day at the seaside. More from this batch later. PS. Thanks are also due to John for the MR wagon and the LMS brake van.
Guest Midland Mole
Ahhh the 1F, by far my favourite little tank engine. She looks just at home shunting around the layout. Plus I love the brake van, shame that the kits for those are next to impossible to find these days. Alex
RMweb Gold john dew Posted March 22, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 22, 2017 Good Morning John I hope you didnt do that photo shoot just for me I had forgotten about those Slaters kits. I have to admit they look far more at home at Port Bredy than they ever did on Granby. I know how much work you put into composition and lighting and it certainly paid dividends with the effectiveness of both these shots and your previous post. You must be very pleased with the new camera? It has been fascinating watching Port Bredy develop from a piece of bare board. I particularly admired how much time you spent determining the position and shapes of the various buildings. Time well spent. Nothing looks contrived. The viewer gets a very definite impression of a sleepy hamlet, a backwater in every sense, that has slowly evolved over many centuries. Brilliant Modelling. Best Wishes John
john flann
John. those imaginative and kind words are appreciated, and thank you, and other members, for your interest. I'll respond to your email later today. But I will say now, it was your comment that made me give the S&DR a run down to Port Bredy and the 1F looks so much at home there. It runs so very smoothly too. And yes indeed how well PB has come on. I was looking at some early bare boards images and that's what struck me. Maybe I will post one or two. As regards the new camera I'm happy with it so far. It's certainly very comfortable to handle and easy to download. All the recent images have concentrated principally on the foreground. Next I want to bring up what lies behind and enhance the focal depth. It's there. I just have to capture it. So I will experiment with the lighting and see what the incandescent light (seen hanging) will bring me. Both these, I like and show promise.
Highlandman
I love the pictures in the last few posts John. The new camera seems to be working well for you. The colours are bright and the pictures are sharply in focus. Port Bredy and its environs are aptly suited to photography. Glad you are able to get out a bit more as the weather improves. Your water in the harbour looks very effective, with that nice greeny tinge that a sandy bottom can give to water.Just an after thought, but when you say new camera, is this a new new camera or the one you have been mastering for the last few months? All the best Andy M
Andrew P
Nice pics as always John, I love the reflections in the water. BTW How many coats of Varnish to produce the water?
westerner
John loved the second picture. I hope you don't mind but couldn't resist getting rid of the lamp and the wall.
john flann
AndyM, happy you like those shots and your knowledgeable photographic appreciation. Yes, I can get out and about more readily now and that is so very welcome. Toward the end of winter one does suffer from extreme "cabin fever'. Before we know it summer will be here as the seasons change overnight. II reality we only have two, winter and summer. The camera is totally new, the Coolpix7000 developed severe downloading problems, the old 5600 still gives good service and the "new" one is a Canon SX720 HS and its results you have been praising. I like it, substantial yet light, comfortable to handle and downloads readily. All I have to do is, as I said, attempt to improve the depth of focus. It may be there, of course, in the RAW images and that I shall await to find out after Steve Flint has cast his expert eye over them. Would you be interested in any? Assuming you are I'll send you a couple later. Trusting all is well with you.
john flann
AndyP, I didn't anticipate those reflections and probably got them because I used a gloss finish. Previously I think I used satin. Whatever, like you and others I'm delighted with the outcome. The actual stuff is Fast Drying-well reasonably quickly in truth-Polyurethane, Superior Durability Clear Semi Gloss made by Minwax here in the USA. And two words of warning, one, make sure your bottom doesn't leak, and is level. The other, it has a most unpleasant smell. I used three coats that add depth. You will find it wicks into the adjacent scenery-as you can see- this I need to do over when dried out. Have fun!
john flann
Alan, thank you. I don't mind at all. In fact I'm chuffed. That is a pleasant surprise and enhances the scene no end. It looks different altogether. And as well it might. I'm very much obliged to you. It also shows how simple photoshopping without impinging upon the quality of an image can make such a worthwhile improvement. I haven't yet learned those skills but my grand daughter Holly says she will introduce me to the mysteries.
westerner
I'm glad you liked it. I just cloned the sky on your back scene.
john flann
This is the final batch of the trial images, close up, foreground and middle distance The scenery etc is getting near to finished, but as the images show there are still matters that need attention. It's a pity the focus in this one is a little off. With a sharper focus it would be a more appealing shot. I'm sure I shall do better next time. On the basis of these and the earlier images I think it fair to say the camera is satisfactory. All that needs to done is for me to become accustomed to it. john flann
Thanks Andy, yes I shall when I can. Lighting is the trick and getting that set up and positioned is hard work singlehanded. But I shall persist. Thanks too gentlemen for all your "likes" and continued interest. I must say I'm fairly satisfied with the results to date. BWsTrains
My nearest modelling neighbor. John Dew in Vancouver 2,000+ miles westward asked me the other day when there was to be a LM&SR working at Port Bredy. IMG_0055_10028-1.jpg Hi John, A rather belated response on your photo; I showed it to my granddaughter (5yrs) yesterday. She is very gifted in matters artistic, unlike me, and is helping with some design aspects of our layout, currently the village playground. She said, "oh! Grandpa, that's so beautiful, I want to help you make your railway look that beautiful," (big hug) Hi praise indeed, even after all that has flowed here already
john flann
Colin, you have a perceptive grand-daughter. It is a delight to be in their company.. She appears too to possess an appreciative eye and maybe even already a prospective railway modeller. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Highlandman
Hi John, the current crop of photographs are looking really good. You must be happy with the new camera. With the completion of Port Bredy so close I wonder what other creations are brewing in that great imagination of yours. Like Westerner I have added a background to the picture you sent me. I found the backscene using Google maps and streetscene. It is from the Little Bredy environs. I liked the picture so much it is now my PC's Windows background. All the best Andy
