Well it’s happened, I’ve finally got me erse in gear and started another project. This time I’m going for a caley class 19 0-4-4. I did consider using a triang m7 as a basis like I did with my 419. But this time I’m tryin a scratch build. I may yet use the m7 but I set to last night at my local club with a plan a scalpel and some plasticard and made a start. Managed to get the basic shape just about right with some filling and sanding required.

Scottish aficionados; if one were to attempt a Caledonian Railway 191 Class...

caledonian-railway-4-6-0-steam-locomotiv

... are there any RTR locos that would work as a chassis donor? The driving wheels are 5ft 6in.

The challenges are it would be a complete scratch build, the coupling rods are 6'2 6'2 so not too bad. Where though would you be able to get the tender axleboxes, Caley models only do earlier ones?

This is the latest project to come off of my workbench. It’s an ex GNSR R Class 0-4-4T. Built for the Aberdeen suburban services, most were withdrawn in the 30’s. As LNER 7505, this was the last of the class.

Built from the former SM Models kit, supplied by Ace Products.

Another one started last Thursday, converting a triang m7 to a north British C16. I spent last Thursday removing everything infront of the tanks, removing the boiler and extending the tanks and bunker. Tonight fitted the boiler, new cab front and rear sheets, together with the chimney done and safety valves.

Nice job in hiding the joins in the bunker.

Filler and different grades of abrasive paper?

Aye I used revell fillet and wet and dry, although I’ve since noticed that the sides have warped slightly to they’ll need bracing or they will crack again.

Latest addition to my 2FS fleet of locos is a CR 323Class 'Jubilee Pug' 0-6-0ST.

The finish leaves something to be desired, I know, but it's the best I can manage these days.

Full details of the build are here.

More progress on my m7 C16 conversion with a Hornby Adams radial chassis used and modified to take Romford drivers etc. Just a push fit at the moment as there’s lots to do yet but I popped it on the track after removing some weight above the rear drivers to allow the bigger wheels to fit. Also opened up the bearings and it runs fine.

Nice one Jim. I do like the look of those archaic Caley pugs!

Only one criticism, the figure on the footplate looks as though he has lost his bow and arrow.  I know that Caley crews threw coal at their Sou’ West rivals as they ran on parallel lines at Ardeer but shooting arrows is a bit drastic!

Thanks, Ian.  It's the fireman taking a break and admiring the scenery while leaning on the bunker extension!

Kirkallanmuir is wee bit far from any Sou' West interference, so I don't think even a member of the Royal Company of Archers could fire an arrow anywhere near them!   :P

A lot more progress on my m7 to c16 conversion, the loco is now looking more complete, tonight I added all the plumbing, lubricator and handrails, Washinhoos pump and tacked on the cab roof, this being temporary as I intend to add a back head and cab floor etc. Also swapped the Adams radial long bogie for a slightly shorter patriot bogie and fitted false frames to get rid of the daylight between the running plate and bogie Just awaiting Hornby county coupling rods and then fit brakes and a few other jobs to do before painting. And I’ve decided that the identity will be 67494 which was a long time Edinburgh St Margaret’s loco.

Well that’s my c16 mostly complete and test run at my local club tonight, some adjustment needed with the coupling rods binding slightly but that was due to using finer Hornby hex nuts on the older Hornby county con rods. Some filing and cleaning up alter and problem solved.

Well that’s my c16 conversion complete. I had the misfortune of having to line it out TWICE as the original set of lining I used, the adhesive on the hmrs pressfix transfers had a strange reaction with the paint and came off....anyway a second lining out and the reaction had still happened for some reason but not as bad (you can see a slight bubble effect under the tank side lining) but that’s only when viewed close up. In time I will re do it with model master or fox transfers but it’ll do at the moment.

Hi

I don't know if I should have put this in the Model Engineering thread but I think its more appropriate in this one.

Photos of my 3 1/2"  gauge Highland Railway Loch built to drawings by Clarkson with detail corrections.  Built in about 5 years along with a second which should be ready for painting in  6 months.  I have not been able to steam it yet as my local Model Engineering Club is closed.  All the boiler checks have been completed.   The boiler is copper silver soldered with a working pressure of 80psi ( coal fired).

I finally finished (well almost save for coal and a light weathering) my Pickersgill 4-4-0 54486. The loco is a scratch built body on a re-wheeled triang L1 chassis and a much modified GEM Glen tender. The loco happily hauls a 4-5 coach train which is more than enough for what I intend it for ie a branch line loco where large loads will not happen. This is a good thing as there isn’t any space left inside the loco to add any more extra weight.

Latest addition to my roster is a CR 417 Class 2-4-0, No. 426, as rebuilt by Drummond.

Far from perfect, but the best I can manage these days.  Tramfabreik 0816 motor in the tender along with a Zimo MZ616 decoder and 4 x 200µf stay-alive capacitors.  The drive runs under the footplate to a worm in the firebox with a further gear drive to the front coupled wheels, the overall reduction being 72:1.

Details of the build here in the 2FS section.

Another addition to the Kirkallanmuir fleet is CR 294 class '18" x 24" x5'0"' 'Jumbo' No. 337 from order No. Y37, ordered 1893, delivered 1894.  Built from etches of my own design and powered by a Tramfabreik 0816 motor in he tender driving the loco through a shaft below the footplate in the same way as No. 426 above.  Again, could be better and one of the etched number plates has gone AWOL, so it will have to wait until I am doing another sheet before that gets fitted.

Absolutely superb Jim, fantastic.

Very clever use of driveshaft + tender motor too.

Thanks @corbs. All my tender locos are driven this way. I have a 'thing' about putting a driveshaft through the open cabs on the locos of the period. Just one of my obsessions! 🙄

It’s been absolutely ages since I posted anything on here so it’s about bloody time that changed. Over the past few months I have been working away on various rtr conversions and kits. The most notablebeing a pair on ex lner c16’s. Both using Hornby adams radial chassis and m7 wheels and gwr county con rods and more. They run very smoothly. One is a much altered triang m7 body shell and the other is a nucast body on the Hornby chassis. B77FAB45-476B-4A6C-8AD9-18FD11713AAB.jpeg.b509b84b036eaa98751aace7c8617f8a.jpeg

Also I have finally finished my scratchbuilt pickersgill 4-4-0 and all it needs is some extra weight adding but. As it is it’ll pull a 4 coach train quite happily. I plan to make a second one but that ain’t now. 8DA00755-FB91-4D28-9164-A9A3D0D0B824.jpeg.e610d3ed2da297ebaeec2665880efc66.jpeg

I have also completely rebuilt a very old K’s ex caley 439 kit which was simply horrible when I got hold of. Was a tenner at a show in a junk box. Well now it’s looking pretty good and runs very nicely

It can be used exactly as is - at least one worked on the Highland in WW1.
