Captain Nick
I have just about finished my latest building and in doing so am getting the back of the layout finished. I just now need to fill in the space between the kilns and the crusher but at the moment I am not sure how to proceed. Obviously it will have to be some sort of quarry building etc. I had thought of a covered conveyor coming in from behind the kilns and feeding the crusher. The crusher is based on the Smalldale crusher building that stood by the Peakdale road bridge. It was built in 1919 and was knocked down round about 1990 although it ceased work in the sixties.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted August 7, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 7, 2015 That's just brilliant Nick, you've absolutely nailed the look of the original. I love the little details like the missing window panes and the rust streaks on the wall from the staircase. Please, can I request a longer view of the layout, with all your modelling in view? Al. Captain Nick
Hi Al I'll get a photo on shortly when I've tidied up a little. The stairway wasn't on the original building. I put it on for a little more detail and interest (and expertise practice). I'm just finishing off the building today and hope to get it 'planted' tomorrow but it is Management's day off tomorrow so I may have other job lists presented to me. In the meantime I have actually been running some trains today now that I've cleaned the track and taken the plunge in tweaking the back-to-backs of my engines myself. Unfortunately, some will probably need re-wheeling but definitely not by me. That seems to be dark arts indeed. Cheers Nick
Captain Nick
Not much achieved since I last posted. The small area between the crusher and the kilns, although not much more than 300 ml wide, has proved problematical. This has been mainly due to indecision as to the way forward on my part. I have also been to work on my large collection of pristine waggons. Half of them now look beautifully manky! This has caused a certain amount of adverse comment from 'Management' as I have been stabling them around the various surfaces of our breakfast room. I actually think they look great and the displayed items invite conversation and admiration from male ( and sometimes female) visitors, however she opines otherwise and so they are now parked in the sidings in front of the kilns. I have removed all the propriety couplings and will in due course, be fitting a combination of Smiths and Spratt and Winkle's, the latter at the ends of small rakes of Smiths coupled waggons. I will post some pics later today together with one of the planted problematic piece referred to above.

380John
Hi Nick, Fantastic modelling and great to see such a dramatic landscape modelled to such a high standard. Hope you are enjoying your retirement i did a small trip for seatime with Iscomar ferries whilst gaining my OOW certificate. Spent sometime on the Andrew Weir RoRo's too. Still at sea and finding it difficult to get regular modelling time!! Cheers, John

RMweb Premium Bogie Posted October 2, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 2, 2015 Appalling is not a word I would associate with this layout in any way (including the photography). Stunning, brilliant and awesome are more apt.
Captain Nick
Hi John. When were you with Iscomar? Were you on The Pilar del Mar or the Blanca del Mar? What are you doing now? Brgds Nick

Captain Nick
The Management has just gone out for a very expensive hair colouring operation. (Carried out by a very charming blonde lady who will be cutting my hair next week and with whom I flirt most outrageously) so I'm kind of scullying about doing naff all at the computer face, so here's another pic of my weathered waggons. 14
380John
Hi John. When were you with Iscomar? Were you on The Pilar del Mar or the Blanca del Mar? What are you doing now? Brgds Nick Hi Nick, No problems, I've double posted and quoted the wrong thing before too! I was a cadet with Bibby and whilst they were still joined with Meridian I took advantage of the spring college break and had a few weeks on board the Blanca Del Mar (this would have been April 2008) you may well have been there. I know Jerry was the longest captain I served there with. Well it's the ship handling I always enjoyed the most and wanted to learn more about, so I'm now Master at Svitzer on their big ASD escort tugs based in Milford Haven. A challenging but rewarding job. Plenty of boat handling and some nice coastal runs. Only problem is that South Westerly wind!!! Cheers, John
RMweb Premium Bogie Posted October 2, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 2, 2015 Surely you are not going to apologise for that latest photo. That is b****y fantastic!!

Cheers, John Funnily enough, Jerry lives a couple of roads away from me. At the time you were there John, I was standing by a new build, the Watling Street (later that year, renamed Pilar del Mar) in Italy before being chartered to Iscomar. What a rubbish outfit that was. They ended up defaulting on the charter payments and going bust. I hope you have a quiet winter but at least you should have plenty of power available and not much windage. Nick I apologise to those reading in for the 'lamp swinging'!
380John
Hi Nick, Ah I'd heard various stories about the company since then. They didn't seem to be as glossy on the inside as they were on the outside! Apologies for the thread hijack!! Keep up the fantastic work and all the best to Jerry! Look forward to seeing more modelling and watching this progress. Cheers, John
RMweb Gold Joseph_Pestell Posted October 2, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 2, 2015 How has this amazing layout only got 4 pages on RMWeb?
Captain Nick
Well, what an exhausting session that was! I have two 4Fs, one Hornby and the other, an old Airfix. Both have been converted to loco drive with Romford wheels. Unfortunately both motors 'jerk' somewhat. Also the current pick up on the Hornby one is very poor although I cannot see what the problem is. I have spent most of this sunny afternoon trying to sort out the CVs but with no luck. Also a tortoise has stopped doing what it is supposed to and requires investigation. It has just left me with a sore head. Thank God it's nearly drink'o'clock! Management is taking me out for a ruby ce soir to be preceded by copious amounts of Prosecco at a hostelry that sells them by the glass for £2.50. I cannot possibly divulge where this fountain of honey is located as you'll all want a glass or two. I digress. Here are some more pics that I've taken so as to get my morale back on track and to be less grumpy this evening. Mind you, 'twas she who got me into model railways in the first place.
Captain Nick
How has this amazing layout only got 4 pages on RMWeb? Hi Joseph. It's because I'm very slow at modelling together with a lot of other competing things that I have to do. I am getting faster as I learn more about the hobby. or should we say 'craft'? Captain Nick
Sorry about that folks. I thought I'd lost my first attempt at replying to Joseph. Now, where's that Prosecco...?
