RMweb Gold RThompson Posted September 20, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 20, 2012 Hello everyone, I'm interested in knowing what the track layout of boscomoor sidings was which I assume from looking at google maps was between the mainline and the M6. I havnt come across any photos to show anything conclusive as those seem to be taken slightly below track level.
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted September 20, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 20, 2012 Have you tried www.old-maps.co.uk ? Search co-ordinates approx 392106, 313159 should give you the approximate area. The 1958-59 1:2500 map shows sidings as 'Penkridge Land Sale' Coal Depot where Boscomoor Industrial estate now stands. avonside1563
I'll ask around, see if I can find any plans. Was there in 92 with a charter but cannot remember the full details.
RMweb Premium Mark Forrest Posted September 24, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 24, 2012 Do you mean the exchange sidings between the mainline and the A449 Wolverhampton Road; the sidings the other side of the A449 in the area where the landsale wharf mentioned above was; or Otherton sidings next to the M6? RMweb Gold RThompson Posted September 24, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 24, 2012 Hi Mark, Its between the A449 and leading towards the M6. I've managed to find a map on the link provided to old maps, thankyou "thesignalengineer" for that, much appreciated. As its not too far from me and could do with going that way to collect some stuff of mine I will make a site visit which looking at google maps looks possible. RMweb Premium Mark Forrest Posted September 24, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 24, 2012 From memory (may have a couple of photos, somewhere) there was a single line with a loop either side. I've heard that there was a siding serving a Rowntrees warehouse on the Boscomoor Industrial estate but I think that was gone by the time I started to take an interest. RMweb Gold RThompson Posted September 24, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 24, 2012 That could be the case as I've seen a colour photo in a book with a manning wardle with the a449 bridge in the background but to the right of it is a large open fronted building with a Yorkshire engine company 0-6-0 diesel poking out with yellow bufferbeams and its either a very dark green or black but cannot actually decide what colour it is. avonside1563
From what I can remember there was three roads under the A449 with a spur into the rowntrees site. The three roads came together to a single line at a bridge over a lane, then there was a two road loop which then cam together again to the single line to the colliery.
Gordon A
Hi Rob, As requested a few pictures of Littleton No 5 at Bitton. Unfortunately one of her name plates was stolen a few years ago, while she was stored in Signal box siding. Who ever took knew exactly what they were doing. RMweb Gold RThompson Posted October 7, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 7, 2012 Thankyou for this Gordon, much appreciated. as to the nameplates, scum comes to mind but we'll leave it at that! One thing i will ask, of the models paints available, what seems to be the closest to the loco blue? The 2 ex SR brake vans appear to be a darker blue than the locos in old colour photos which to me looked like Dark Network south east blue and have already put the first coat on the brake vans which actually looks spot on! I'm actually going to go and visit the former railway soon on one of my days off as its not too far for me luckily.
Gordon A
Rob, I have no idea as to what is the closest blue for NCB loco's is. Perhaps some one else might know. Gordon
RMweb Premium Mark Forrest Posted October 10, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 10, 2012 This page might be of interest; third photo down is the area you are looking at, facing towards the mainline connection which is under the bridge.

RMweb Gold RThompson Posted October 11, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 11, 2012 Thankyou for the extra links, much appreciated. Sadly I've already painted the brake vans ready for transfers (will need to experiment with doing my own again). I've just been and walked the line today from penkridge as far as the M6 bridge which now has gates across, found some old rail chairs on the way. At the weekend I will post some photos, just waiting for the bus to wolverhampton now.
avonside1563
There's a photo of a SR van painted as a Littleton one at Chasewater on their facebook page if you scroll down to a post on 25 April. https://www.facebook...s/106181474852/

RMweb Gold RThompson Posted October 19, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 19, 2012 (edited) Hi all, it was probably worth going to make the site visit as the site of the rowntrees warehouse and rowntrees cottage is about to be knocked down shortly as i came across a planning application. Found some old rail chairs on the route as well as well as the old fencing. Heres the photos from penkridge as far as the M6 motorway which now has gates across and is clear no one has been down to them for years. mikeh
Here's a plan of the sidings at March 1976 after the changes made for the introduction of MGR working: It shows the extent BR locos were permitted to work. The Rowntrees siding is the one above the "Through" siding. This was shunted by the NCB engines, the wagons arriving first thing on the trip from Bescot - the trip engine then took out the first MGR. The warehouse is the one shown in Rob's pictures. I am still trying to trace the date this opened? It was built on the site of the former landsale yard. PGH
This rather grainy photo was taken in April 1971 and shows No.7 Hudswell Clarke 1752/43 and brakevan standing on the points leading to the Rowntrees warehouse. On the left is No.3D Hunslet 7181/70 Edited October 11, 2018 by PGH
RMweb Gold RThompson Posted October 29, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 29, 2012 Some very good photos on here, thankyou guys. Certainly answered a few questions. Whilst I am after information around the penkridge area, certainly don't stop with just there for the line. Thankyou everyone.
PGH
Whilst I am after information around the penkridge area, certainly don't stop with just there for the line. I can post more photos, especially of the colliery end of the line and locos, etc, in a new topic on the colliery itself, if there is any interest
