1938 Stock

The LTM have announced trips on the 1938 stock on 9 September.

Journey to Metro-Land

Date: Sunday 9 September 2018

Step back in time with our art deco heritage special, and enjoy journeys reminiscent of the 1930s in metro-land when the 1938 Tube stock train runs on the Metropolitan line between Harrow-on-the-Hill, Amersham and Watford.

Dress up in your deco best, and get into the vintage vibe at Amersham station with The Susie Qs, a 1940s close-harmony trio, singing Andrew’s Sisters classics and performing the dance moves to match.

Meet costumed characters who will be bringing the history of past travel to life, watch your little ones getting inspired with our crafty children’s activities and browse the London Transport Museum’s pop-up shop with its range of Metropolitan line gifts.

There are also free heritage bus rides from Amersham Station to Amersham Old Town where the town’s annual Heritage Day will take place, with live bands and performances, market stalls and a children’s area and fairground.

Journey times and ticket prices for the Journey to Metro-Land event are coming soon.

In association with GB Railfreight, the Swanage Railway and London Underground Ltd, we are delighted to bring you news of a series of inexpensive day trips from London Waterloo, Woking and Basingstoke, running right through to the Swanage Railway.

The train will be formed of the distinctive London Transport red-liveried 4TC set, topped and tailed by Class 73/1 locomotives. We will travel via the South Western Main Line, via Winchester, Southampton and the New Forest. Passing Bournemouth we skirt Poole Harbour and at Worgret Junction we veer left on to the Swanage branch.

The branch itself, now one of Britain’s leading preserved railways, is full of interest and offers the passenger some delightful views of some of the finest scenery in southern England. We pass the sidings at Furzebrook which for many years kept the branch alive. After passing the modern ‘park and ride’ station at Norden we get a wonderful view of the dramatic ruin of Corfe Castle, towering above the picture postcard village of the same name.

You can either alight at Corfe or remain on board for the last few miles to the neatly restored terminus at Swanage, right in the heart of the town and just a few minutes’ level walk to the sandy beaches. The bustling resort is full of eating and drinking places – what better treat than enjoying freshly cooked fish and chips as you gaze over the bay and take in the sea breezes!

We will be at Swanage for around three hours (if you alight at Corfe Castle your break there will be around 40 minutes longer). You will be entitled to a reduced return fare on the scheduled Swanage Railway steam trains.

Please note that First Class accommodation is in six-seat side corridor compartments. Most Standard Class seating is in ‘open’ carriages. Light refreshments will be available.
Although this tour will be running on four successive weekends, do bear in mind that the TC is only a four-car train so capacity is limited. Early application is therefore recommended.

Am I being unnecessarily pedantic or does anyone else find the likes of former GWR Prairie tank locos and BR 4TC sets, which have no former connection whatsoever with the Met or LT,  being tricked out in faux Met/LT livery utterly fanciful and somewhat pointless?

A few views from yesterday... High Street, when she snuck up on us about 10 minutes early. We assumed later that the tour was timed for the District lines between Acton and Baron's Court, but maybe actually travelled on the Picc. I can't see any other way that it could have been that early. By Temple, it was only about 3 early...

... and finished with the classic shot at Rayners Lane as the tour came in to reverse back to Ealing Common...

After that, it was back to the LT museum for a quick look around, a visit to the shop, and...
