Hi, over the course of a year, until I emigrated to Norway in January 2012, I constructed a freelance Norwegian outline layout.

Whilst browsing through my photos I found some pictures of its construction, so I have decided to post some on here.

The layout is constructed almost entirely from 6mm plywood, using "girder" construction for the base boards. and simple slot in legs.

This view shows the fiddle yard with a selection of stock. I am already considering adding more storgae roads, as the stock list keeps growing.

post-7758-0-31702000-1349555821_thumb.jpg

In order to save space and weight, the end boards are simply a trackbed with bracing underneath, and sidewalls in case of derailments.

This is the right hand end of the layout with ballasting in progress, and the positions of the overhead catenary masts being plotted out. Trackwork on the viewing side is PECO code 75, with code 100 in the fiddle yard and Hornby 4th radius setrack on the end boards.

Left hand side, with the cut out for the river visible.

The layout was exhibitied at the Ely exhibition in May this year, and is scheduled to appear at the Norwich show next April.

I will add some more pictures soon.

Good stuff! You don't see too many Scandinavian layouts around...so this does look interesting. The design looks simple and functional, with some interesting looking stock to run on it; any more info on these?

Your post seems to imply you are no longer working on it...is this so, because it looks a very promising start.

Hi, the layout is more or less complete, and it is currently residing at my parents house, as it was booked to attend the Ely show after I had emigrated. I intended to ship it across after the exhibition, but it gained an invite for Norwich next year. When the invites dry up, I intend to bring it to Norway and extend it.

The rolling stock is from a number of manufacturers, namely, Norsk Modeljernbane, Roco, Hobbytrade & Piko. I will try to take some pictures of the stock the next time I visit England.

After a visit to Norway which involved a journey Stjordall-Åsen and a long return trip Trondheim-Oslo I was very tempted to get some NSB models, but I really can't justify modelling yet another prototype!

I'll keep an eye on this thread as the next best thing!

Thanks for the comments guys. Here is installment 2.

post-7758-0-77694900-1349624792_thumb.jpg

Ballasting is complete, and the platforms are installed. Clearances are being checked with a B7 coach. A start has been made on the basic scenery.

The tunnel mouth at the right hand end has been installed and the scenic contours built up from layers of polystyrene.

Tunnel mouth at the left hand end is prepared for fitting and the overhead catenary masts have been installed.

Overall view. The platforms will be longer than shown, they have yet to be fitted to the left hand baseboard.

Andy, thanks for that. A mate of mine has recently changed scales, and given me a baseboard of the same dimensions, 8' by 2'. Looking at your photos gives me some good ideas about how I can use it. The catenary masts you're using, they're made by Viessmann?

I've always found the Scandinavian railways rather interesting, especially their steam locos and EMUs, so I'll be following your progress with a similar interest.

If anyone doubts the concept of a tunnel - station - tunnel in a compact space, it's totally prototypical. On a holiday in 2008 we visited Bergen from a holiday chalet on the Hardanger Fjord, by driving to Arna, which is a park and ride station - the first station out of Bergen. People park there and take the train as an alternative to paying the Bergen city congestion charge. The railway was rebuiolt with a direct tunnel form Bergen to Arna so that the new Arna station (now just called Arna) is squeezed in between two tunnels, with an essentially simple track layout.

Hi guys, here is installment 3.

post-7758-0-03559800-1350237093_thumb.jpg

As you can see, the polystyrene has been coated with plaster bandage, plus a coat of plaster. The rock faces have been installed, and base colouring carried out.

Hanging basket liner is being applied to create the grassy areas, and a dwelling has appeared.

The left hand end of the layout, with the rest of the platforms installed and the station building (Kibri kit) is being test fitted.

Final shot for now, with an El18 posed on the bridge.

Ok, after a week in Gran Canaria, time for another installment.

post-7758-0-71628800-1351187846_thumb.jpg

Trees appearing on the mountainsides. There are over 300 trees on the layout, and I still think it needs more. The trees are from Bachmann Scenescapes in order to save time and my sanity!

Again, towards the right.

This one simply because I like the viewpoint.

I have a video too, but I'm not sure if I will be able to post it.

Incidentally, does anybody know the guy with the "Project Iraq" layout? He took some photos of Aros at the Ely show and they are bound to be better than mine!

Looking great! Its wonderful to see some Scandi modelling progressing :)

The number of trees has got to be quite intimidating! How about adding a handful of "specimen" trees to draw the attention, and allow the Bachmann trees to blend into the background somewhat. As well as those pines, I think you'd also see a lot of larches and birches, especially scrappy little ones toward the edge of the track.

Thanks Justin, I do intend to add some Silver Birches, which are pretty common here in the real Aros. The layout is currently in storage in the UK, but I hope to get some more work done on it before its next showing, April 2013 at Norwich.

New toys!!

I finally succumbed to temptation last week. After being paid for a local private job, I decided to treat myself to a visit to NMJ in Strommen.

post-7758-0-97328500-1353003057_thumb.jpg

First purchase was an NMJ Di8 loco in Cargonet livery. These locos are used for freight work on the non-electrified lines around Norway, although some have been replaced by new CD 312 locos. This example is destined to haul timber traffic. Incidentally, this type of locomotive operates in the UK at Redcar(?) steelworks, owned by GBRf.

post-7758-0-47554700-1353003070_thumb.jpg

Next was a pair of bogie gas oil tankers. Strictly speaking, these operate in Germany, however, StatOil is a Norwegian company and I couldn't resist them. These will form part of a mixed freight hauled by a Green Cargo locomotive.

Anyone who has an interest in Norwegian models will know that they don't come cheap. Lets just say that the cost of the Di8 was not far off the RRP of a Hornby sound fitted loco!

Another recent arrival is an El14 freight loco, which is cuurently in works. (See dedicated thread)

Just found your thread, great bit of work there.

Also, station between two tunnels, check out Bangor, North Wales.

The tunnels are even closer together!

Nice to see a Norwegian prototype at long last - My son and his wife live on Malmoya Island just outside Oslo so we are a bit familiar with the country and a bit overfamiliar with the Lillestrom line up to Gardemoen! (I try to avoid the non stopper - too much time in the tunnel!) It could be so tempting to have a go at a little Nordic modelling but I think Ive enough projects on the go as it is. Add to that the cost of Norwegian models, a trip to one of Oslo's model shops took my breath away even though I'm quite immune to 80 NKr a pint (£8 + to the unititiated) I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Hi all, thanks to the kind help of 'Doctor Quinn' of this parish, I now have some photos of the layout taken at the Ely & District MRC's exhibition last May. These were taken by Tony Bennett of 'Project Iraq' fame.

If anyone doubts the concept of a tunnel - station - tunnel in a compact space, it's totally prototypical. [...] the new Arna station [...] is squeezed in between two tunnels, with an essentially simple track layout.

Another interesting example of a station squeezed between tunnels is Dombås, where the diesel only Rauma line branches off from the electrified Dovre line:

Here's the northern end in more detail, with two tunnels; the Rauma branch goes into the western one:
