westerner
The best result I've had for this question after searching the internet is mid 1960's. Can anydody be more specific as to when Warships were painted Maroon. Which was the earliest? and does anybody know when Foxhound was painted Maroon. Thanks in expectation. RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted October 22, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 22, 2012 I'm sure I have seen a page with repaint dates soemwhere but in a short coffee break at work I can't locate it. I'll try later if no-one else gets in first. All were delivred green and maroon repaints occurred fairly swiftly though the final green one (D810) lasted until 1970 IIRC by which time some were already blue! Offhand I can't recall when the last maroon one was repainted / withdrawn but quite a few went to their graves in that livery especially from class 43. Maroon was still around into the early 70s. Coach bogie
Book of the Warships has all the livery details and dates for the entire class. http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Book-Warships-John-Jennison/dp/1906919119 Mike Wiltshire
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted October 23, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 23, 2012 In case you can't find the book Alan (but it is well worth it if you can) the first 'Warship' into maroon was D837 ex works on 22 September 1965. D817 went into maroon in September 1966 acquiring full yellow ends in December 1967; it was withdrawn in 1970 in that condition so it spent the majority of it working life in green. westerner
Thanks very much Mike. I did think It might be about then, so I'll have to make sure it's not running with steam locos about.
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted October 23, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 23, 2012 Not directly on topic but I have just been indexing some pictures taken at Plymouth in August 1967. These included D856 in green SYP and BR Late Crest, D801 and D828 in Maroon SYP and roundel, D820 and D849 in Blue FYE and logo both ends.
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted October 23, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 23, 2012 I am wondering whether D856 ever carried maroon, as it was still in green in the summer of 1968, but appears to have been blue in February 1970
Geoff Endacott
D856 was never maroon and D817 wasn't withdrawn in 1970. None of the Warships were withdrawn that year. Geoff Endacott
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted October 24, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 24, 2012 Apart from the prototypes D800-2 I don't think any Warships were withdrawn until 1971. Quite a few (mostly of class 43) were however out of use by 1970 and I believe never saw service again.
RMweb Gold Downendian Posted October 24, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 24, 2012 Just checked my records- I don't have the "to maroon" dates (just ordered the Jennison book to rectify this). D817 was withdrawn MFYE 3/10/71 D863 Warrior was withdrawn pre 1970 (26/3/69) the first three 42s in 1968. Others to carry Maroon to the graveyard were D801 (MSYP) D809 (MFYE) D815 (MFYE, 1957 numerals) D838 (MFYE), D840 (MSYP), D848 (MSYP) Neil Edit: removed D802 from list
westerner
Interestingly in Hydraulics in the West There is a phot of a maroon warship pulling A Pullman train chartered by the British India Line takingpassengers to Falmouth in conjunction with the refurb of the SS Nevasa The photo is dated 17th Oct 1961 and taken at Truro by Eric Irons. I assume the date is wrong.
westerner
Just checked the SS Nevasa web site and its first cruise after refit was 1965 Unfortunately the loco isn't mention but it looks (through a lens) as if it might be 854.
Geoff Endacott
I don't have the book to hand to get the exact dates, but seven of the D800s were withdrawn before 1970. The first three, D800, D801 and D802 together with Paxman-engined D830 and three of the standard Class 43s, D840, D848 and D863. No diesel-hydraulics were withdrawn in 1970 which is one reason the layout Somerford is set in that year. There were still 64 Warships in traffic at the end of 1970. Two years later they had all gone. Geoff Endacott

RMweb Gold Downendian Posted October 26, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 26, 2012 So it did! I will amend my original post - it went blue 10/10/67 with double arrows and D prefix. I really must get that Jennison book and revisit my records. Neil
RMweb Gold Downendian Posted November 1, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 1, 2012 Just received the rather excellent Jennison book- Warship modellers should not be without it! so citing that source: To Maroon dates D801 24/6/66-WDN D802 6/4/66-10/10/67 D805 7/1/66 MFYE 2/2/68-24/10/70 D806 28/6/66 MFYE 16/1/68-4/3/71 D809 4/3/66 MFYE 8/3/68- WDN D811 5/11/65 MFYE 3/8/67-9/1/70 D812 31/12/65- MFYE 9/4/68-13/3/70 D813 11/65-5/7/67 D815 23/8/66 MFYE 29/1/68-WDN D817 9/66 MFYE 12/67-WDN D821 6/5/66-11/1/68 D823 5/66 MFYE 5/68-19/9/69 D828 6/3/66-12/7/69 D829 12/65 MFYE 6/68-10/69 D832 1/4/66 MFYE 3/69-11/70 D834 10/6/66 MFYE 8/2/68-31/12/70 D838 10/66 MFYE 09/68-WDN D839 24/2/66-11/7/70 D840 20/10/66-WDN D842 3/10/66 MFYE 2/5/68-17/10/70 D844 02/66 MFYE (No recorded dates but it had them) to blue 3/1/71 D848 22/6/66-WDN D855 13/5/66-2/1/70 D857 22/9/65-28/4/67 D858 8/10/65-14/10/69 D861 23/9/66-8/3/71 D862 26/11/65-27/4/70 D863 8/65-12/67 D865 11/11/65-31/8/69 D867 9/66-25/9/70 D869 4/66 MFYE 12/69-9/8/70 D870 12/65 MFYE 5/68-10/69 Neil

JeffP
Neil, if the loco isn't on that list, (D824), does that mean it never carried maroon livery?
RMweb Gold Downendian Posted November 12, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 12, 2012 That's correct Jeff all missing numbers went straight from green to blue and never carried maroon. edit except D800 which was scrapped in green Neil

BrushVeteran
was D823 repainted Blue and did it retain the crests ? D823 did receive blue livery, as 823, and yes it did retain the crests as can be seen in my rather poor image of it at Swindon in 1972, although crests had by then been removed.
