Warship Liveries

The best result I've had for this question after searching the internet is mid 1960's. Can anydody be more specific as to when Warships were painted Maroon. Which was the earliest? and does anybody know when Foxhound was painted Maroon.

Thanks in expectation.

I'm sure I have seen a page with repaint dates soemwhere but in a short coffee break at work I can't locate it. I'll try later if no-one else gets in first.

All were delivred green and maroon repaints occurred fairly swiftly though the final green one (D810) lasted until 1970 IIRC by which time some were already blue!

Offhand I can't recall when the last maroon one was repainted / withdrawn but quite a few went to their graves in that livery especially from class 43. Maroon was still around into the early 70s.

In case you can't find the book Alan (but it is well worth it if you can) the first 'Warship' into maroon was D837 ex works on 22 September 1965. D817 went into maroon in September 1966 acquiring full yellow ends in December 1967; it was withdrawn in 1970 in that condition so it spent the majority of it working life in green.

Apart from the prototypes D800-2 I don't think any Warships were withdrawn until 1971. Quite a few (mostly of class 43) were however out of use by 1970 and I believe never saw service again.

Just checked my records- I don't have the "to maroon" dates (just ordered the Jennison book to rectify this).

D817 was withdrawn MFYE 3/10/71

D863 Warrior was withdrawn pre 1970 (26/3/69) the first three 42s in 1968.

Others to carry Maroon to the graveyard were

D801 (MSYP) D809 (MFYE) D815 (MFYE, 1957 numerals) D838 (MFYE), D840 (MSYP), D848 (MSYP)

Edit: removed D802 from list

Interestingly in Hydraulics in the West There is a phot of a maroon warship pulling A Pullman train chartered by the British India Line takingpassengers to Falmouth in conjunction with the refurb of the SS Nevasa The photo is dated 17th Oct 1961 and taken at Truro by Eric Irons.

I assume the date is wrong.

I don't have the book to hand to get the exact dates, but seven of the D800s were withdrawn before 1970. The first three, D800, D801 and D802 together with Paxman-engined D830 and three of the standard Class 43s, D840, D848 and D863. No diesel-hydraulics were withdrawn in 1970 which is one reason the layout Somerford is set in that year. There were still 64 Warships in traffic at the end of 1970. Two years later they had all gone.
